The Animation Guild Reaches Tentative AMPTP Agreement

The Animation Guild (TAG), IATSE Local 839, reached an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on May 27, 2022.

Some gains that TAG achieved include improved New Media conditions, retroactive wage increases, significant gains for animation writers, the addition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a covered holiday, the establishment of a Labor-Management Cooperative Committee to address studio specific issues and paving a path forward for Union-covered remote work.

This comes after almost a month’s worth of negotiation days spread out between November of 2021 to May of 2022:

  • Nov. 29, 2021: Negotiations commenced with TAG addressing wage increases, new media disparities and other top priorities. An agreement was not reached within the five days allotted for bargaining.
  • Feb. 14, 2022: TAG and the AMPTP returned to the bargaining table. Progress was made, but not enough to reach an agreement.
  • Feb. 28, 2022: TAG entered a third round of negotiations with the AMPTP. Progress continued to be made, but TAG’s top member priorities had not been met in a meaningful way.
  • Feb. 28 through May 26, 2022: The Animation Guild’s Negotiations Committee and the AMPTP continued to trade responses in an effort to reach agreement.
  • May 27, 2022: TAG announces the Union and the AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement.

“I am incredibly proud of The Animation Guild members who volunteered their time and energy to the Negotiations Committee. The proposals we brought to the employers focused on making the work lives of our members better, and we have made significant progress towards achieving those goals. A #NewDeal4Animation does not stop today, we will continue to fight for the rights and benefits our members deserve, as well as ensuring all animation workers across the U.S. can use their collective voice to make similar change,” says Business Representative Steve Kaplan.

The Animation Guild membership will vote on ratifying the new agreement toward the end of June 2022.

‘Ice Merchants’ Wins Cannes Critics’ Week Jury Prize

Having just made its world premiere in the Semaine de la Critique (Critics’ Week) at the Cannes Film Festival, The Ice Merchants has been awarded the Leitz Cine Discovery Prize for Short Film, marking a prestigious first for Portuguese animation.

The short film by young Porto-born filmmaker João Gonzalez was one of the 10 short films selected for the competition of the famous Cannes section. Ice Merchants is an intriguing animated film that explores the relationship between a father and a son, rendered in a singular artistic style that mark out Gonzalez as a promising talent.

Award ceremony
João Gonzalez (right) accepts the short film award for ‘The Ice Merchants’ at Cannes Critics’ Week.

Ice Merchants was also recently announced in the selection of Mexico’s Guadalajara International Film Festival, being one of the 15 nominees for the Rigo Mora International Prize (created by Guillermo del Toro); the category winner is eligible for qualification in the Academy Awards.

Jurty statement: “The Leitz Cine Discovery Prize goes to a film that has, as one of your jury members puts it, ‘Everything that you expect from a short film.’ Here is a filmmaker that knows how to tell a story, and he does it well. He creates a short-film that holds us on the edge from the first moment. Aesthetically this film is fresh and perfect in itself, but more than that, this film has a mission, a real and important mission… And it is made by a filmmaker that we hope will get wind under his wings and as a consequence will fly high and long. The prize goes to … Ice Merchants.”

Every day, a father and his son jump with a parachute from their vertiginous cold house, attached to a cliff, to go to the village on the ground, far away where they sell the ice they produce daily.

Director’s note: “Something that has always fascinated me about animation cinema is the freedom it offers us to create something from scratch. Surrealistic and bizarre scenarios and realities that can be used as a metaphorical tool to talk about something that is common to us in our more ‘real’ reality. A man and his son parachute every day from their cold and vertiginous house attached to a cliff to go to the village that lies on the plain below, where they sell the ice they produce every day. Ice Merchants is a human story and a family drama set in an impossible reality.”

After the award-winning short Nestor and The Voyager, Ice Merchants is Gonzalez’s third film and his first as a professional director, with the support of the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual. Gonzalez was also the instrumentalist and composer of the film’s soundtrack, with Nuno Lobo in the orchestration. The soundtrack is by Ed Trousseau, with recording and mixing by Ricardo Real and Joana Rodrigues.

A Portuguese, English and French co-production, the film was produced by Bruno Caetano at COLA – COLETIVO AUDIOVISUAL, in co-production with Michaël Proença from Wild Stream in France and with the Royal College of Art in the U.K.

Ice Merchants was one of just two animated shorts in competition at the Critics’ Week, the other being It’s Nice in Here by Robert-Jonathan Koeyers (Netherlands). The program also presented a special World Premiere screening of Joseph Pierce’s Scale (France / U.K. / Czech Rep. / Belgium). See the selected films here.

Future of Seth Green’s Animated Show in Question After Theft of NFT Ape

File this one under reasons NFTs are the work of the devil! The future of Seth Green’s upcoming animated series White Horse Tavern which incorporates characters from the actor’s rich NFT collection, looks uncertain after he lost his Bored Ape to a phishing scam this month. According to Buzzfeed, the popular actor/writer/producer and co-founder of Stoopid Buddy Stoodios and co-creator of Robot Chicken, has lost his license to commercially adapt the monkey. The situation has been compared to a hostage situation where Green is now attempting to negotiate the return of his “kidnapped ape.”

Yesterday, Buzzfeed identified the new owner of the NFT as an Australian surgeon who goes by the pseudonym “DarkWing84” and bought the NFT from the anonymous scammer for $200,000 before transferring it to another collection called the GBI_Vault. The collector told Buzzfeed that he “bought the NTF in good faith” and that he has no plans for the NFT. The individual added that he would be happy to chat with Green directly. “I have just woke up and have seen this craziness. Please put him in contact with me,” he told Buzzfeed.

Meanhile, Green has noted that he is willing to pursue legal action to get his ape back. However, on Tuesday, Green tweeted that he would “rather meet @DarkWing84 to make a deal, vs in court.” He added, “A buyer who purchased stolen art with real money and refuses to return it is not legally entitled to exploitation usage of the underlying IP.”

According to NFT legal experts, if the original thief still had the Ape in his wallet, Green would still be legally regarded as the “true owner,” with his right to exploit the underlying intellectual property left undisturbed. Unfortunately, the Ape was quickly sold to DarkWing84 who inadvertently paid  for the fraudulently procured art.

Here is the trailer for the show Green shared with audiences at the NFT conference VeeCon last weekend:

Watch: Disney+ Unwraps Trailers for ‘Andor’ and ‘Willow”

Diego Luna returns to the Star Wars galaxy! Disney + unveiled the trailer for Andor, the upcoming series featuring Luna’s Rogue One character, five years before the events of that movie. The trailer premieres at Thursday’s Star Wars Celebration confab in Anaheim, Calif.

Season One of Andor is set to premiere on August 31 with two episodes. According to showrunner Tony Gilroy 12 episodes of the show have been already filmed, and a dozen more will begin shooting in the fall for season two. “You’re not going to recognize Cassian Andor in the beginning. I cannot wait for you to meet him,” Luna said Thursday.

Andor centers on the spy who sacrificed himself while getting plans for the Death Star to the Rebellion in the 2016 movie. The  highly anticipated show also stars Adria Arjona, Stellan Skarsgard, Genevieve O’Reilly and Denise Gough.

Celebration fans were also treated to the new teaser trailer for Lucasfilm and Imagine Entertainment’s Willow, the new live-action fantasy adventure series based on the classic 1988 feature film, at the Lucasfilm studio showcase panel at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim today. Willow will premiere November 30 this year exclusively on Disney+.

Willow is described as “an epic period fantasy series with a modern sensibility set in an enchanted land of breathtaking beauty.” The film features a diverse international cast with Jonathan Kasdan, Ron Howard, Wendy Mericle, Kathleen Kennedy, and Michelle Rejwan serving as executive producers. The story began with an aspiring magician from a Nelwyn village and an infant girl destined to unite the realms, who together helped destroy an evil queen and banish the forces of darkness. Now, in a magical world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures flourish, the adventure continues, as an unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.

Andor is just one of many Star Wars shows in development for Disney’s streaming service. Fans can look forward to the third season of The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ahsoka, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Rangers of the New Republic and The Acolyte.
Willow follows the Nelwyn dwarf sorcerer Willow Ufgood on an all-new adventure years after the events of Ron Howard’s original movie. The film premieres on Nov. 30.

‘Rosie’s Rules’ Brings a New Bilingual Best Friend to PBS KIDS This Fall

PBS KIDS today announced that Rosie’s Rules, a colorful new 2D animated preschool comedy series from 9 Story Media Group and its award-winning studio, Brown Bag Films, will make its debut on October 3. The series stars five-year-old Rosie Fuentes, a bilingual Mexican-American girl from suburban Texas who is just beginning to learn about how the great, big, fascinating world around her works.

Featuring an engaging social studies curriculum, a dynamic cast of characters, catchy music and hilarious stories, Rosie’s Rules aims to show kids ages 3-6 how they, as individuals, fit into their own community, as well as broader society.

“Like many young children, Rosie likes to figure things out for herself, and the mission of Rosie’s Rules is to nurture that curiosity and ‘learning-by-doing’ among viewers,” said Sara DeWitt, Senior Vice President & General Manager, PBS KIDS. “Many families around the country will recognize themselves in Rosie’s amazing, culturally-diverse extended family and connect the rich Mexican, Southwestern and Midwestern traditions, food, art, language and music featured in the series with the unique customs and culture of their own families.”

In Rosie’s quest to understand some of the world’s most mystifying concepts, like how the mail works or family relationships, she will bonk into, break, rip and spill her way into constant comic chaos, usually doing it wrong before she gets it right. As Rosie figures things out, the answers — along with other astute discoveries — become “Rosie’s Rules.” These rules for navigating everyday life range from the silly (“Don’t try to mail your cat to Mexico.”), to the sweet (“There’s nothing better than making your Abuela happy.”) to the practical (“Sometimes flopping helps you get your feelings out.”). Rosie’s Rules also reinforce what Rosie’s learned in the episode, bridging the curriculum takeaway and the heart of each story.

Rosie and her blended, multicultural family live in suburban Texas. Her Papá is from Mexico City, and her entrepreneurial Mom is from rural Wisconsin. Rosie has a little brother, Iggy, and an older sister, Crystal, who is Mom’s child from her first marriage. Gatita is Rosie’s fluffy feline sidekick.

Rosie's Rules
Rosie’s Rules

Rosie’s Rules features a social studies curriculum specifically tailored for preschoolers, which encompasses civics and government, geography, economics, and history, presented via engaging, character-based narratives to help viewers achieve the social studies proficiencies that are important for preschoolers. Rosie’s home is filled with reminders that social studies is all around us. Maps on the walls, giant family calendars, family photos (in the pattern of a family tree), even an address on the door support the curriculum and help viewers connect social studies concepts to their daily lives. Music is part of every episode, as Rosie sings the “I’ve Gotta Know” song to begin each story and ends with a celebration tune summarizing what she’s learned.

“We care deeply about all children seeing themselves reflected on screen,” said Angela C. Santomero, Chief Creative Officer for 9 Story Media Group. “It is our mission to bring kids content that inspires them to change the world, and we believe Rosie’s Rules will do just that! The series’ unique social studies curriculum will help children learn about themselves, their families, and communities through enhancing their self-identify and expanding their experiences beyond the walls of their home.”

Rosie’s Rules was created by Emmy Award-winning writer and children’s book author Jennifer Hamburg, a veteran of the children’s TV industry whose credits include Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Super Why!, Pinkalicious & Peterrific, Cyberchase and Doc McStuffins. Executive producing with Hamburg is TV veteran Mariana Diaz-Wionczek PhD (Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Go!, Santiago of the Seas), who brings a wealth of children’s TV experience and cultural, educational, and linguistic expertise, along with her own life experience growing up in Mexico City. Maria Escobedo (Grey’s Anatomy, Elena of Avalor, Nina’s World) is story editor.

Games will launch in tandem with the series on pbskids.org and the free PBS KIDS Games App. To extend the learning at home, parent resources, including tips and hands-on activities, will be available on PBS KIDS for Parents. For educators, PBS LearningMedia will offer classroom-ready materials, including video excerpts, games, teaching tips and printable activities.

You can watch the show’s opening song sequence on the show’s page (English or Spanish) at pbskids.org.

Xentrix Studios Australia Adapting ‘Funny Kid’ to Series

Xentrix Studios Australia has announced a new partnership with HarperCollins, which will see the animation shop and publisher working closely together to bring author Matt Stanton’s Funny Kid middle grade comedy books to life as an animated show.

The deal to adapt the 13-book series further solidifies Stanton as a standout voice in the Australian children’s literature world, and unites his unique voice with the fastest growing animation studio in Australasia.

“Xentrix Studios Australia is all about supporting local talent, we have identified Matt Stanton and his Funny Kid series as an exciting new opportunity for our studio. His recent sales success has reconfirmed that this series will be an exciting project to be involved in,” said Ken Cantrill, Head of Creative, Xentrix Studios Australia. “We are looking forward to commencing the development of Funny Kid with Matt early 2022.”

Stanton shared, “It’s so exciting to see the work of Australian children’s storytellers being recognized around the world right now. That only happens because of the talented teams we get to partner with.

“I am thrilled to be able to continue working with my book-family at HarperCollins Children’s Books Australia. Launched just five years ago, Funny Kid centers on Max, the funny kid! Every kid loves to laugh, but Max is the boy who can make it happen: He’s the class clown, the punch line, and sometimes quite literally the butt of the joke. Through his adventures, Max has run for class president, engaged in the ultimate prank war, auditioned for a super hero movie and launched a puppy-smuggling operation.

Stanton is also the uproarious writer behind over two dozen titles, including the Books That Drive Kids CRAZY!Fart Monster and Friends and The Odds series. According to his website (mattstanton.net), the prolific author loves mangoes, orcas, the color black and his four kids.

Xentrix Studios Australia specializes in services for high-end CGI animation, traditional 2D animation and gaming projects. Based just outside Melbourne, the studio’s slate also includes a raft of projects in the works with Sleigh Group.

Xentrix Studios, which also has locations in India, the Philippines and Singapore as well as an L.A.-based sales and client management team, has worked on projects like The Simpsons (20th Century), Butterbean’s Café (Nickelodeon) and NovelMore (Playmobil), and recenlty announced a partnershipt to adapt the popular NFT property Fluffy Polar Bears.

Warsaw Studio Human Ark Toasts 15 Years with Rebrand & Expansion

Human Ark, a Warsaw-based production studio, is just celebrating its 15th anniversary by making a few changes: Human – the company’s new, streamlined name – is updating its visual identity and expanding its business strategy.

“Human Ark is now Human. We simplified the name because Human is the quintessence of this company. This one word describes our strategy in the best way. In our everyday activities, we focus on people – because the company is created by them,” explained CEO Maks Sikora. “Strategically, we want to give a clear signal about a wider range of our services. We are not just an animation studio that does high-quality advertising. The Human offer includes a whole spectrum of post-production and VFX services that allow to work on all forms of film, from commercials, through music videos and campaigns, to series and feature films.”

Broad Peak
Broad Peak

Operating on the Polish and international production market for over a decade, Human’s team of over 50 animators, graphic designers, programmers and producers creates digital special effects as well as 2D and 3D animations for the world of film, advertising and art. The studio’s services also include comprehensive post-production services. In recent years, the company has carried out advertising projects for clients from Europe and Asia. Major projects for which Human creates special effects include Broad Peak, a movie based on the true story of the legendary Polish mountaineer Maciej Berbeka, and drama series High Water, produced by Telemark, both of which are headed to Netflix.

Human is distinguished by the high quality of character animation, the ability to create complex visual effects and the high artistic value of the productions. Now, the Human headquarters has grown by another floor: The new post-production facility is equipped with off-line, online, DI and color grading in a cinema working space. Moreover, in 2018 Human entered into a partnership with the Czech producer PFX;  an experienced, 120-person team, headquartered, among others, in the iconic Barrandov Studios in Prague. The studios support each other in advertising and film projects. PFX is also the co-producer of Diplodocus – Human’s original production.

Diplodocus
Diplodocus

“We are currently producing the first 3D animated film on such a scale in Poland. Thanks to participation in foreign fairs, festivals and conferences, we understood that Diplodocus is a film with great international potential. We met many people from the industry who helped us and supported us during the preparatory period. At Cartoon Movie, we found a partner for the film – PFX,” commented Wjotek Wawszczyk,, director of Diplodocus and Art Director of Human. “As an organization, we are at a time when such cooperation is part of the development and the new strategy of the studio. We have been on the market for 15 years, it is a very important moment for us.”

“In addition, of course, we continue to focus on high-end advertising and
advanced visuals in movies and TV series,” Wawszczyk added. “We are constantly looking for new creative ideas. We are at an advanced stage of work on Diplodocus, but knowing how long it takes to develop our own
production, we are already thinking of the new titles. In addition, we are looking for new collaborations in the field of film – both service and co production. Regardless of whether the project is commercial or fictional, we see a film in every form – this approach determines the way we think and act in Human.”

Thai Creators Dive into ‘Sea of Love’ Pre-K Toon for Netflix Worldwide

Living together in harmony amidst all the world’s natural differences is the message at the heart of Sea of Love, the first English-language animated series for preschoolers from Thai creators on Netflix, which began streaming this week. The series delights in the wonders of the ocean and imparts an important life lesson: no matter who you are, everyone has something valuable to offer.

Produced by The Monk Studio in Bangkok, Sea of Love features a group of aquatic animal friends: Bruda, the enthusiastic whale; Wayu, the cheerful ray; Puri, the kind-hearted seahorse; and Bobbi, the perky shark. Despite their wildly different appearances, personalities and aptitudes, they learn and grow together and support one another as they share the vast and serene sea. Through their adventures, children realize that friendship can grow between those who are different.

The series was conceived by three creators who wanted to develop animation for their own children. But, they wanted to go beyond teaching children about daily practical tasks. Instead, they decided to create  stories that teach children how to relate to their peers, and co-exist harmoniously in a diverse society. These messages are wrapped up in an engaging, 2D storybook style.

Wanichaya
Wanichaya Tangsutthiwong

Sea of Love is an animated series crafted with real understanding of both kids and Thailand’s seas,” explained director Wanichaya Tangsutthiwong. “We collaborated with early childhood education professionals — including kindergarten teachers — to identify intriguing topics and realistic solutions, and kept them as raw material for our  storylines. Similarly, the characters were  developed based on real children’s personality traits and behaviors.  The team went diving to explore the Thai sea and attended workshops with coral specialists to recreate the setting as realistically as possible, in the hope of inspiring youths to love nature through the beauty of the ocean.”

Aimsinthu
Aimsinthu Ramasoot

Aimsinthu Ramasoot, showrunner and co-creator, added, “We learned a lot through our collaboration with Netflix. Sea of Love arose from our desire to provide high-quality animation that teaches preschoolers how to function in society. We do not simply show what the children like; we also present what is good for them. It is similar to preparing good, wholesome, and enticing meals that the kids love to eat, and which will give them essential nutrients too. We hope the audience will appreciate and enjoy the interplay between friends, parents, grandparents, and outstanding teachers throughout the narrative.”

Fifteen episodes of Sea of Love are now available to stream at netflix.com/seaoflove.

Butch Hartman Launching Pre-K Bible Toon ‘The Garden’

Butch Hartman — the creator of some of the most successful animated children’s series in Nickelodeon history, including The Fairly OddParents (which ranks as Nickelodeon’s third longest running animated series), Danny Phantom, T.U.F.F. Puppy and Bunsen Is a Beast —and his wife Julieann have set out to produce a brand new animated show: The Garden.

The 2D series presents biblical lessons for children ages 3-8, told through the adventures of Lenny the Lion and Lucy the Lamb, who live in a magical garden.

“We all know how much VeggieTales impacted the lives of millions of children. We’d like to follow in their footsteps and do the same thing with The Garden,” Hartman explained. “Our goal is to make the truth of the Bible easier to understand. The Garden will provide a fun way for kids to comprehend the Gospel and who Jesus is through stories and songs.”

As in previous Hartman projects, The Garden will include original songs. The Fairly OddParents was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music & Lyrics in 2002 for “I Wish Every Day Could Be Christmas,” co-written by Hartman. That series snagged two more nominations in the category the next year, for the original songs also co-written by Hartman “What Girls Love” and “It’s Great to Be A Guy,” and again in 2004 for “Wish Come True!”

“Songs make memorization so much easier,” Hartman noted. “As a kid, I could remember Beatles songs but couldn’t remember my times tables! We want kids to memorize scripture more than pop tunes. Providing kids with amazing songs to sing is one of our goals to help them learn the Bible.”

The Hartmans have already planned at least two seasons of episodes and are in negotiations to secure the right strategic partner and platform to launch by the third quarter, 2022. “These episodes will be seeds we plant in the hearts of kids,” said Julieann Hartman. “Ultimately, we want to partner with parents to help teach their kids about the love of Jesus.”

Butch Hartman’s further plans for the property include creating a VBS curriculum for churches and illustrating a children’s bible for Harper/Collins, entitled The Garden Children’s Bible, which stars the characters from The Garden and is due out in 2023.

Irreverent Genesis Tale ‘Lilith & Eve’ Sets Tribeca Premiere

What happens when the ‘first’ woman on Earth meets the ‘first-first’ woman on Earth? Audiences will soon find out when the new animated short Lilith & Eve celebrates its World Premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival in New York (June 8-19, tribecafilm.com).

Created by director Sam de Ceccatty and producer Manon Ardisson, Lilith & Eve features the voicesof BAFTA winner Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education) andd Susan Wokoma (Enola Holmes) in the title roles. The satirical adult comedy will screen June 12 in the “Animated Shorts Curated by Whoopi G” program.

The film is set in Eden: a lush, safe haven where all living creatures can fornicate peacefully, home to Adam and Eve, the first man and woman on Earth. Or so Eve thinks, until one day she is surprised by an unabashed stranger who introduces herself as Lilith, first woman on Earth. Eve’s initial confusion only worsens when Adam admits that Lilith is indeed his first wife, but insists she is a demon and as such doesn’t count.

Lilith, bored with the couple’s bickering, grabs the apples she’d come for and leaves, but Eve’s mind is too fully blown to let it slide. Defying Adam for the first time, Eve runs after Lilith for answers. What she will learn will rock the very foundation of everything Eve knows about the world — and about herself.

“Lilith & Eve is a project born with my first daughter,” says de Ceccatty. “My life partner Manon and I grew up in respectively Catholic and Jewish households, but we spent much of our adult lives unlearning what religion had taught us. In particular, we’ve always resented the story of Adam and Eve, which defines women as man’s suitable helper (Genesis 2:24). So when we first heard of Lilith, Adam’s first wife and equal, nicknamed ‘mother of all demons’ for refusing to submit to Adam, we were destined to fall in love. After naming our first daughter after her, we decided to set the record straight and tell Lilith’s story as we saw it: the story of a biblically badass woman, who took control of her own destiny.”

The filmmakers set out to reclaim one of western culture’s founding stories in a way that is empowering to women, while promoting their independence and friendship. In addition to Wood as Eve and Wokoma as Lilith, this passion project features the voices of Conor Kennedy as Adam and trans actor & activist Jake Graf as the Archangel Samael. The score was composed by Sundance Lab alumna Camilla Uboldi.

Sam de Ceccatty is a French-American writer and director whose shorts screened in Oscar- and BAFTA-qualifying festivals worldwide. As a writer, de Ceccatty won the BBC Comedy Writers Room with his preapocalyptic sitcom What If, and was a finalist of the ITV/Red Planet Prize with his comedy crime Black Cows Give White Milk. He was also featured on the 2017 BBC Talent Hot List.

De Ceccatty wrote Lilith & Eve, his debut animated project, with his life partner and producer Manon Ardisson, who was BAFTA-nominated for the BFI-backed, BIFA-winning feature film God’s Own Country (Sundance 2017, winner of the World Cinema Directing Award). Ardisson is the managing director of Ardimages UK (recipient of a 2020 BFI Vision Award).

Together, de Ceccatty and Ardisson are now developing an animated series based on Lilith & Eve.
