Eisner Hall of Fame Judges’ Picks, Public Nominees Announced

Comic-Con International (Comic-Con) announced that the Eisner Awards judges have selected six individuals to automatically be inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame for 2022. Trophies will be presented in a gala awards ceremony held during Comic-Con in San Diego, on the evening of July 22.

These inductees include two deceased comics artists: EC founder/publisher Max Gaines (who devised the first four-color, saddle-stitched newsprint comic in 1933) and writer Mark Gruenwald (legendary Marvel Comics editor); two pioneers of the comics medium: British illustrator Marie Duval (co-creator in 1867 of the British cartoon character “Alley Sloper,” considered the first recurring cartoon character); cartoonist Rose O’Neill (creator of The Kewpies in 1912); and two living legends: Filipino American artist Alex Niño (DC, Marvel, Warren, Heavy Metal etc.) and artist P. Craig Russell (best known for Elric, his adaptations of opera to graphic novels, and his collaborations with Neil Gaiman, including on The Sandman, Coraline, American Gods and Norse Mythology).

The judges have also chosen 17 nominees from whom voters will select 4 to be inducted in the Hall of Fame this summer. These nominees are:

  • Howard Chaykin, creator of “Cody Starbuck” (Star*Reach), graphic novel pioneer (The Stars My Destination, Empire), artist of the first Star Wars comics.
  • Gerry Conway, co-creator of Marvel’s “The Punisher” and “Ms. Marvel”, DC’s “Power Girl” and “Killer Croc.” Wrote the death of Gwen Stacy and pioneering crossover Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man.
  • Kevin Eastman, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Founder of Tundra Publishing. Former owner and publisher of Heavy Metal.
  • Steve Englehart, 1970s Marvel writer hired by DC to revamp their core characters. Creator of Coyote, Scorpio Rose, The Djinn and The Night Man. Writer for the Street Fighter, GI Joe and Team Atlantis animated series.
  • Moto Hagio, shoujo manga pioneer. Creator of Heart of Thomas, A Drunken Dream, They Were Eleven and Otherworld Barbara. First woman comics creator to receive the Japanese Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon. Helped shape the style of symbolic backgrounds used in manga today.
  • Larry Hama, writer/artist/editor/actor whose titles include G.I. JoeWolverine, Avengers, Conan, Batman, Wonder Woman, X-Men, Spider-Man and many more.
  • Jeffrey Catherine Jones (1944-2011) creator of  recurring comic strips in National Lampoon ( Idyl) and Heavy Metal (I’m Age), artist for Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella, and cover painter for more than 150 books. In the late 1990s, she undertook medical gender affirmation and embraced life as a woman.
  • David Mazzucchelli, regular Daredevil artist who worked on Frank Miller’s Born Again arc as well as Batman: Year One. Created the anthology Rubber Blanket and award-winning graphic novel Asterios Polyp.
  • Jean-Claude Mézières (1938-2022), co-creator of Valerian and Laureline; concept artist on major motion pictures including Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element.
  • Grant Morrison, comics writer whose many credits include Doom Patrol, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth, New X-Men, All-Star Superman; his most recent projects include Happy! (Image), adapted as a TV series on Syfy.
  • Gaspar Saladino (1927-2016), a letterer and logo designer for more than 60 years on titles including Swamp Thing, The Flash, Hellblazer, Green Lantern, Batman, Teen Titans, Metal Men and The Avengers.
  • Jim Shooter, editor-in-chief of Marvel (1976-1987) and founder of Valiant Comics, Defiant Comics and Broadway Comics. Shooter began his career selling stories to DC Comics at just 14 years old.
  • Garry Trudeau, creator of the comic strip Doonesbury, published in over 400 newspapers nationwide. The first comic artist to win the Pulittzer Prize, and a strong advocate for cartoonists’ rights.
  •  Ron Turner, founder of San Francisco-based label Last Gasp (1970), publisher, distributor and wholesaler of underground comix and books. Publisher of Slow Death, Wimmen’s Comix and Weirdo.
  • George Tuska (1916-2009), artist for the Iger-Eisner Studio, Harry A Chelser Studio, Crime Does Not Pay, Doc Savage, Scorchy Smith, Buck Rogers, Ghost Rider, X-Men and the daily Superman (until 1993).
  • Mark Waid, writer/editor for Amazing Heroes, The Flash, Captain America, Fantasic Four, Superman: Birthright. Former editor-in-chief/CCO of BOOM! Studios, currently publisher for Humanoids.
  • Cat Yronwode, writer, editor and comics scholar who penned the long-running “Fit to Print” column in Comics Buyer’s Guide; author of The Art of Will Eisner and Women and the Comics (with Trina Robbins). Editor-in-chief of Eclipse Enterprises, which published Miracleman, The Rocketeer and Zot!.

Max Gaines
Max Gaines

Max Gaines (1894–1947) devised in 1933 the first four-color, saddle-stitched newsprint pamphlet, a precursor to the color-comics format that became the standard for the American comic book industry. He was co-publisher (with Jack Liebowitz) of All-American Publications, a seminal comic-book company that introduced such enduring fictional characters as Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and Hawkman. He went on to found Educational Comics, producing the series Picture Stories from the Bible. He authored one of the earliest essays on comic books, a 1942 pamphlet titled Narrative Illustration, The Story of the Comics. After Gaines’ death (in a motorboating accident) in 1947, Educational Comics was taken over by his son Bill Gaines, who transformed the company (now known as EC Comics) into a pioneer of horror, science fiction and satirical comics.

Mark Gruenwald

Mark Gruenwald (1953–1996) was hired by Marvel Comics in 1978 and stayed there until his death. During his tenure, he worked on a variety of books before becoming their executive editor and keeper of continuity for much of the 1980s. Gruenwald had a knack for remembering every bit of minutia about Marvel Comics. The publisher even opened up a challenge for readers to stump him but had to discontinue it when it became clear nobody could beat him. Gruenwald is most recognized for his work on a new team of heroes known as the Squadron Supreme. The Squadron’s characters had been around, but Gruenwald decided to focus on a new set of the heroes in an alternate reality. The Squadron Supreme received a 12-issue miniseries and is considered a precursor to highly popular deconstructionist superhero parables like WatchmenKingdom Come and The Boys. Sadly, Gruenwald died of heart failure in 1996. He had long told his wife he wanted his ashes to be a part of his work. When Squadron Supreme was collected into a trade paperback, his ashes were mixed into the ink.

Alex Niño was among the Philippine comics artists recruited for U.S. comic books by DC Comics editor Joe Orlando and publisher Carmine Infantino in 1971. Niño’s earliest DC work was drawing stories for House of Mystery, Weird War Tales and other supernatural anthologies, as well as the jungle-adventure feature “Korak” in Tarzan. He moved to the U.S. in 1974. Over the next several decades, Niño drew all types of stories for DC, Marvel, Warren (Creepy, EerieVampirella), Heavy Metal, Byron Preiss, Dark Horse Comics and other publishers. Starting in the 1980s, Niño branched out into movies and video games, doing design work and concept art for Hanna-Barbera, Sega and Walt Disney Pictures (Mulan and Atlantis). Niño received an Inkpot Award in 1976.

P. Craig Russell has spent 50 years producing graphic novels, comic books and illustrations. He entered the comics industry in 1972 as an assistant to artist Dan Adkins. After establishing a name for himself at Marvel on Killraven, Dr. Strange and Elric, Russell began working on more personal projects, such as adaptations of operas by Mozart (The Magic Flute), Strauss (Salome) and Wagner (The Ring of the Nibelung). Russell is also known for his Fairy Tales of Oscar Wilde series and his graphic novel adaptations of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman: The Dream Hunters, Coraline, Murder Mysteries and American Gods. His most recent project has been Gaiman’s Norse Mythology for Dark Horse. Russell received an Inkpot Award in 1993 and has won several Harvey and Eisner awards.

Pioneer Marie Duval (1847–1890)  was born Isabelle Emilie Louisa Tessier in Marleybone, London in 1847. Tessier was one of the first female cartoonists in Europe. Her fame rests on her contributions to the Ally Sloper comic pages created with her husband Charles Henry Ross in the comic periodical Fun, and reprinted in a shilling book, Ally Sloper: A Moral Lesson (full title: Some Playful Episodes in the Career of Ally Sloper late of Fleet Street, Timbuctoo, Wagga Wagga, Millbank, and elsewhere with Casual References to Ikey Mo) in November 1873. This work is often called “the first British comic book.” The idea of a recurring, familiar cartoon character — so basic to comics and cartoons as we know them now — appears to have begun with Ally Sloper. The wildly popular character (a hard-drinking working class shirker) is thought to have inspired both Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp persona and W. C. Fields. Besides Ally Sloper, Marie Duval drew a range of comic fantasies (“caricatures”) for the magazine Judy, a Victorian rival to Punch.

Pioneer Rose O’Neill (1874–1944) was an American cartoonist and writer who, at a young age, became the best-known and highest-paid female commercial illustrator in the United States. A four-panel comic strip by O’Neill were featured in a September 19, 1896, issue of Truth magazine, making her the first American woman to publish a comic strip. She earned her international fame and fortune by creating the Kewpie, the most widely known cartoon character until Mickey Mouse. Her Kewpie cartoons, which made their debut in a 1909 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal, were made into bisque dolls in 1912 by J. D. Kestner, a German toy company. The dolls became immediately popular and are considered to be one of the first mass-marketed toys in the United States.

TV & Streaming News: HBO Max Plans ‘Ani-May’ for AAPI Heritage Month, Netflix Dates ‘Rise of TMNT’ Movie & More

HBO Max will promote its Asian American and Pacific Islander Voices collection to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, starting May 1 — amplifying AAPI stories and talent by featuring curated content available on the platform, in addition to the three winning films from the HBO Max Asian Pacific American Visionaries Short Film Competition, directed by up-and-coming AAPI directors.

HBO Max’s collection pages also include Anime and More Global Animation, an anime-centric page which also includes content from Studio Ghibli. During this year’s AAPI Heritage Month, HBO Max will launch the Ani-May initiative, which includes a celebration of iconic anime moments old and new, fashion from Asian animation, Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time and other episodes influenced by anime. In addition, an original meditative rainfall video from Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You and a new Adult Swim episode of Ambient Swim inspired by ’90s anime will be featured.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie

Netflix recently revealed release dates and more details for its summer movie slate. IN addition to the previously announced launch of Chris Williams’ The Sea Beast on July 8, the season will have at least one animated highpoint: the eagerly awaited premiere of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie on August 5. Based on the 2D animated Nickelodeon toon (2018-20), the pic was previously announced as part of the streamer’s 2021 animation slate.

Per that announcement, the movie will see the Ninja Turtles faced with their greatest challenge yet when a mysterious stranger arrives from the future with a dire warning. Leo is forced to rise and lead his brothers, Raph, Donnie and Mikey in a fight to save the world from a terrifying alien species … the Krang! Ant Ward and Andy Suriano are set to direct, and Haley Joel Osment is joining the series cast. Nickelodeon Animation Studios is producing.

As part of the nature appreciation programming event, Nature Cat, Hal, Squeeks and Daisy will embark on a week of exciting outdoor adventures, helping all sorts of friends along the way!

The gang will discover the sounds of the woods to find the soundtrack for a Nature Dance Party, track a scent on the wind to find a spot that holds a special memory, look for answers as to why leaves fall, and embark on a wild river ride filled with rapids, floods and dams. Tally ho!

Federation Kids & Family and China’s UYoung Media announced deals with Discovery Kids in Latin America and U.K.’s POP for the kids’ animated action-comedy series, Kung Fu Wa! UYoung finalized the LatAm deal, and Federation, which handles worldwide distribution outside of China and LatAm, brokered a deal with Narrative Entertainment for POP. Kung Fu Wa! (52 x 11’, kids 6-9), co-produced by Chinese internet conglomerate Tencent Video and leading Chinese kids’ entertainment company UYoung, is a fun, endearing which combines the pizzazz of girl power, kung fu, comedy, action and more.

The series follows the adventures of a curious eight-year-old girl named Tee Zee who always dreamed of going on adventures and exploring wonderful places, and then one day she finds an odd-looking sock in her mother’s laundry that… talks… and was originally a Kung Fu Master from another world charged with guarding an ancient scroll. When the Master came through a vortex into Tee Zee’s time, his powers were weakened, and he was transformed into a sock. However, when the little girl puts the sock on her foot she transforms into a super heroine! Together, they must complete Kung Fu Wa’s mission and follow the ancient scroll to defeat evil and protect their world.

 

Crunchyroll Italiano

Crunchyroll is delivering a treat for fans in Italy with the premiere of the very first Italian dubs this Spring, complementing Crunchyroll’s biggest anime season on record. Earlier this month, Crunchyroll announced the full slate of dubbed anime heading to the platform with 25 series streaming for fans in a mix of English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and Russian.

Anime series receiving Italian dubs this season include:

  • The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1: This beloved dark fantasy isekai follows Naofumi Iwatani in his journey to become the shield hero. Italian fans will be delighted to catch up on season 1 dubs, while catching the season 2 simulcast each week.

Viacom18 is celebrating the stellar performance of Nickelodeon in India, where the franchise enjoys a cumulative network share of 32% for kids’ TV. Nickelodeon today delivers the highest reach week to week (48 million kids) boasts of the largest home-grown content library thanks to the launch of 11 successful IPs in 11 years. The pioneering franchise continues to top the charts with two channels, with Nickelodeon at No. 1 and Nickelodeon’s SONIC at No. 2 for FY22. And there is more to come!

Nick will roll out new stories from fan-favorite toons with all new episodes of Rudra, Shiva, Motu Patlu and Chikoo aur Bunty, as well as many made for TV movie premieres. This will include Motu Patlu & the Secret of Devil’s Heart, premiering May 29, and the first ever crossover for two super cool characters in Shiva-Rudra vs. Pirates of Universe, which premiered Sunday and is available to stream on Voot Kids.

SONIC is set to bring back the fun and thrills with new episodes of Golmaal Jr, Pakdam Pakdai, Pinaki and Happy The Bhoot Bandhus. Margate Stop-Mo Studio A+C Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Independent U.K. animation studio A+C marks 15 years of stop-motion artistry, growth and success in 2022. Founded in 2007 by director Dan Richards in his dad’s shed, the shop has evolved into a leading source for highly crafted, unique animated content for global brands like LEGO, National Geographic,  Trivago and Cadbury.

“I am very proud. Fifteen years is a milestone worth celebrating,” said  Richards. “Over the last 15 years, we have acquired vast experience and are always learning new approaches to ensure our clients get the best results. Nevertheless, it has been quite the journey to get where we are now.”

After setting up shop with “little more than a box of Plasticine, a camera and a big vision” (as well as, apparently, a beneficent parent!), Richards built A+C into a small but growing startup which, by 2009, was ready to move into cushier digs: a shipping container in Whitstable.

A+C continued to grow its reputation, and finally relocated to a lofty Victorian property in the historic seaside resort town of Margate in 2014. Formerly a girls’ school, The Old Laundry location now houses three animation production studios, a model-making workshop, a motion design studio and an edit suite.

“We have had to take the good with the bad at a time of great change,” Richards confessed. “Still, we have managed to build a strong team in Margate, which deliver world-class animation. So, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my colleagues, our business partners and friends for their valuable support over the last 15 years, and we are looking forward to many more.”

To celebrate the milestone, in May A+C will release 15 for 15 — a series of the studio’s favorite works — culminating in a party at the Margate studios for local creatives and clients.  Artist James Dyer will be live drawing a celebration piece in the courtyard, guests can sculpt-a-selfie with a stockpile of Plasticine in the props studios, and local businesses will be providing food and drinks.

Husband & Wife Team to Launch First Black-Owned Animation Network

In another stride towards representation and diversity in animation, husband and wife media mavericks Jermaine and Whaketa Hargrove are planning to launch a new content platform, Animation TV — billed as the “first-ever Black-owned animation streaming network.” Set to launch this summer, the outlet aims to introduce viewers of all ages and nationalities to the versatility and beauty of animated storytelling.

Animation TV CEO & Founder Jermaine Hargrove commented, “We are using Animation TV and exclusive content to bring awareness to the lack of diversity and inclusion in the animation industry. By offering distribution to global animation creators, we will amplify the voices that sometimes go unheard.”

Animation TV will offer its content with a subscription and linear channel model for ease of access to viewers. The network will work in collaboration with Small Town Animation Studios to deliver original, exclusive animation content, such as the diabetic superhero movie Gumshe: The Type 1 Protector, faith-based series The Sunday Schoolers, and other originals  like Animate My Life, Welcome to  Gamerville, Princess Tatenda and Shelly: The Dancing Spider.

The new venture is also dedicated to giving back and creating opportunities for up and coming animation professionals by investing a portion of its revenue in scholarships for students from under-served communities. In line with this initiative, Animation TV has partnered with major animation educators and resource providers including KitBash3D and The Animation School in South Africa.

“The Animation School continues to drive diversity through partnerships such as Animation TV,” said the School’s director & co-founder, Nuno Martins. “These [partnerships] highlight the importance of building a diverse community within the international animation industry.”

Jermaine Hargrove added, “Structuring a theatrical partnership with a major film studio for some of our stronger animation IPs is also a goal of Animation TV. We are currently looking to finance, develop and distribute all forms of animation content (2D/3D) from creators all over the world.”

Animation TV will also leverage new technologies, tapping into the Metaverse and NFTs. Based in Southeast George, the platform will be available globally for all operating system interfaces, including iOS, tvOS, Android, Android TV and the worldwide web.

‘The Future Ahead’ Is Already Here at Animayo Gran Canaria

Animayo, the International Festival of Animation, Visual Effects and Video Games — Spain’s only designated “Qualifying Festival” for the animated short film Oscar category, has unveiled the program for its 17th edition. The 2022 event, taking play May 4-7, returns to a face-to-face format in addition to an online phase that will be held from October onwards.

Under the motto “The Future Ahead”, Animayo will transform the island of Gran Canaria into a hub of knowledge for art and cutting-edge technologies like never before, with all the activities to be held at the La Caja de Canarias Cultural Initiatives Centre (CICCA) and the Guiniguada Theatre.

“This is a festival that has been transformed in a natural way. Our own world has brought all these new technologies,” producer and director of Animayo Damián Perea pointed out. “Two years ago we were the first festival in the world to make an entirely virtual animation festival featuring avatars; we were already in the metaverse. Now it’s time to inform, train and discuss in order to continue creating that much needed critical mass.”

The Festival is introducing an important new feature this year: the Animayo Discussions, featuring special guests, with no restrictions on  audience questions — fully interactive discussions “that arise as a direct response to the need to generate a number of knowledge-based conclusions,” as Perea puts it. “In general, people talk about the metaverse in a very superficial and polarized way, but we need to understand all the nuances, and to do so Animayo is bringing in specialists from this virtual universe. We also think it is equally important to include a gender perspective by addressing the role of women in the industry, who only reach 30% in terms of visibility in decision-making positions.”

New immersive technologies are a key focus of this year’s Festival.

Three discussions will be held at the Guiniguada Theatre from 18.15 to 20.00 hours: “Women in the Audiovisual Industry” (Thursday, May 5), “Metaverse, Virtual Reality, NFTs, what does the future hold?” (Friday, May 6) and “Ethics and morals in Artificial Intelligence” (Saturday, May 7).

For the first time in the Canary Islands, Animayo will premiere  an augmented reality exhibition only visible through the lens of a mobile device; NFTs in their own right “which will be available for purchase, with 100% of the profits benefiting associations and NGOs that help Ukrainian refugees.” An exhibition dedicated to the painterly, aesthetic 2D animated short film, Amanece la Noche más Larga (Dawn of the Longest Night), based on a story by  three-time Goya winner Ángel de la Cruz — directors Carlos Fernández De Vigo and Lorena Ares will be attending the Festival as guests.

Once again, Animayo has positioned itself as an innovative space where animation, visual effects, art, science and technology come together. The on-site phase will dedicate more than 80% of its time to the real heart of the festival, which is training. Outside the classes and panels, the public will be able to enjoy the best animated films for adults. The Guiniguada Theatre will host the screenings of the short films from the five International Official Sections in Competition. There will be more than 60 films from over 20  countries, which will be reviewed by the 15 members of the Animayo International Jury — the Grand Prize winner will be directly longlisted for the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Animayo will also offer thematic screenings, such as a focus on Polish cinema.

For the third consecutive year, the international official competition section “My First Festival” (May 7, noon to 13.30h) will invite kids ages six and up to vote for the Best Children’s Short Film. The selected films address the importance of respecting one’s own feelings and each other’s individuality. The event is free to attend with ticket reservation (email animayo@animayo.com with the subject “Book My First Festival” with the  name, email and telephone number of the adults and the number of children who will be attending).

The program is the perfect addition for younger kids to “Sin Salir del Aula” (“Without Leaving the Classroom”), which has enrolled more than 8,500 students on the island of Gran Canaria alone. Aimed at primary, high school and art school students, the activities combine animation and visual effects with free screenings, an official competition section and educational master classes, also free of charge, over TV. Crunchyroll Brings ‘Eureka’s Epic Conclusion to Theaters in May

‘Harley Quinn’ Spinoff Starring Kite Man Takes Flight at HBO Max

HBO Max has ordered Noonan’s (working title) to series. The 10-episode adult-animated DC series, centered on Kite Man (voiced by Matt Oberg) is a spin-off of the Annie- and GLAAD Media Award-nominated Max Original  Harley Quinn — slated to return for a third season this summer.

Lovable loser Kite Man and his new squeeze Golden Glider moonlight as criminals to support their foolish purchase of Noonan’s, Gotham’s seediest dive bar, where everybody knows your name, but not necessarily your secret identity!

Step into the World of Wallace & Gromit in ‘The Grand Getaway’ VR

Multi-award-winning independent animation studio Aardman, Meta Quest and immersive storytelling experts Atlas V have today announced an interactive, narrative-led, single player VR experience for Meta Quest 2 headsets which will take fans on a brand-new adventure with Wallace & Gromit.

In The Grand Getaway, Wallace and Gromit are off on vacation to enjoy sun, sand and the chance to test out their latest contraption: Auto-Caddy. But Wallace has his dates mixed up — they have to be on the other side of the country in just half an hour! There’s only one thing for it … they’ll take the Rocket. But a mishap with the controls sends Wallace, Gromit and Auto-Caddy hurtling off course. Will this be a holiday to remember?

The Grand Getaway will be launched on Meta Quest 2, the all-in-one VR headset, enabling users for the first time to walk around, explore and get hands-on (or paws-on!) within the world of Wallace & Gromit, and truly be a part of the pair’s adventures.

Cartoon Network Studios, Outlook Co. Launch Content Development Initiative for Emerging Talents

Cartoon Network Studios (CNS) and Outlook Company are teaming up to launch a new content development initiative designed to discover emerging artists and storytellers. Founded by former NFL star Trevor Pryce, Outlook Company is an animation studio that specializes in elevating underrepresented creators and artists in the Mid-Atlantic region.

The program will launch with six local participants and be based at Neru Projects, Outlook’s recently formed animated projects incubator. Creative executives from Cartoon Network Studios and Neru Projects will work with these individuals and help shepherd their ideas from concept to pitch through the development of a series bible. At least one project will be selected to begin formal development at Cartoon Network Studios and Outlook Company — but, through the program, all participants will learn how to collaborate with creative partners to develop and package their original animated series ideas.

“This is a great way for Baltimore artists to have their work seen, considered, and given professional animated content feedback. It is an invaluable experience, as there are now six more professional, credited animation show creators in this part of the world,” said Trevor Pryce, CEO of Outlook Company.

CinemaCon: Disney Details Pixar, 20th, Marvel Slate, ‘Avatar’ Sequel

Walt Disney Studios’ presentation at CinemaCon 2022 took place at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas earlier today, where Disney’s head of theatrical distribution Tony Chambers, Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige and Avatar producer Jon Landau unveiled the studio group’s 2022 theatrical release slate, offering an exclusive preview of titles from Marvel Studios, Pixar Animation Studios and 20th Century Studios.

The preview included a look at three upcoming releases from 20th Century Studios, notably The Bob’s Burgers Movie and James Cameron’s first follow-up to his sci-fi action-adventure Avatar, the highest-grossing movie of all time.

Opening in theaters December 16,  Avatar: The Way of Water is set more than a decade after the events of the first film, and begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Winslet. To whet audiences’ appetites, the studio will re-release Avatar in theaters on September 23.

The teaser trailer, which was screened in 3D for the very first time today and reportedly drew enthusiastic responses from the CinemaCon audience, will debut exclusively in theaters with Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on May 6. In addition, Saldana will be receiving the CinemaCon “Star of the Year” award at the Big Screen Achievement Award ceremony on Thursday evening, April 28.

In a video message pre-recorded from New Zealand, where the sequels are filming, Cameron said this return to Pandora is “designed for the biggest screen and the most immersive 3D available” and “to test the limits of what cinema can do.” The worldwide release will offer 160 language versions and an unprecedented number of formats, including IMAX, stereo 3-D and PLF.

The studio also screened the first six minutes of The Bob’s Burgers Movie, which opens in theaters nationwide May 27, for convention attendees. As previously announced, the story begins when a ruptured water main creates an enormous sinkhole right in front of Bob’s Burgers, blocking the entrance indefinitely and ruining the Belchers’ plans for a successful summer. While Bob and Linda struggle to keep the business afloat, the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family’s restaurant. As the dangers mount, these underdogs help each other find hope and fight to get back behind the counter, where they belong.

The animated, big-screen, musical comedy-mystery-adventure based on the long-running Emmy-winning series showcases tbhe voice talent of the show’s cast and recurring guests, including H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Larry Murphy, John Roberts and Kristen Schaal, with Zach Galifianakis and Kevin Kline. The film is directed by Loren Bouchard & Bernard Derriman. The screenplay is by Bouchard & Nora Smith. The producers are Bouchard, Nora Smith, and Janelle Momary-Neely.

CinemaCon attendees were also treated to footage from Disney and Pixar’s upcoming feature film Lightyear, which opens in theaters on June 17. This sci-fi action-adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.

The film features the voices of Chris Evans as Buzz Lightyear, Uzo Aduba as his commander and best friend, Alisha Hawthorne, and Peter Sohn as Sox. Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi and Dale Soules lend their voices to the Junior Zap Patrol’s Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison and Darby Steel, respectively, and James Brolin can be heard as the enigmatic Zurg. The voice cast also includes Mary McDonald-Lewis as onboard computer I.V.A.N., Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, Efren Ramirez as Airman Diaz and Keira Hairston as Young Izzy. The film is directed by Angus MacLane (co-director, Finding Dory), produced by Galyn Susman (Toy Story That Time Forgot), and features a score by award-winning composer Michael Giacchino (The Batman, Up).

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

… And Marvel Studios took the CinemaCon audience on a thrill ride through the Multiverse with footage from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which opens in U.S. theaters on May 6. With the film, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Fans will journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.        

The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong and Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg and Rachel McAdams.  Sam Raimi directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll, Scott Derrickson and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

According to Feige, the sequel has already totted up $42 million in pre-sales.

A sizzle real opening the presentation also offered glimpses at Black Panther: Wakanda Forever directed by Ryan Coogler (Nov. 11) and Thor: Love and Thunder from Taika Waititi (July 8).

‘Sketchbook’ Draws Attention to Disney’s Hand-Drawn Animation Artists

If you’ve ever dreamt of sitting with a master animator to learn how they made the magic that was part of your childhood, Sketchbook, the new Disney+ limited series, will feel a lot like wish fulfillment.

Premiering today, the series looks into the world of traditional hand-drawn animation through the eyes of the artists who create it. The series focuses on the techniques and the personal lives of six artists who’ve made tremendous contributions to the world of animation:

Famed animator and director Eric Goldberg draws The Genie from Aladdin and discusses collaborating with Robin Williams. Hyun-Min Lee draws Olaf from Frozen. Encanto story artists Samantha Vilfort and Gaby Capili draw Mirabel from Disney’s latest Oscar-winning movie and Kuzco from The Emperor’s New Groove, respectively. Animator Mark Henn draws Simba from The Lion King, and visual development artist Jin Kim draws Captain Hook from Peter Pan. In short, it’s all pure 2D animation-lovers’ heaven.

Each episode focuses on one of the animators, their story and inspirations, and how they view animation. The series is timed just ahead of the 100th anniversary of 2D animation at Disney, which occurs in 2023. The producers on the series are Walt Disney Animation Studios with executive producer Amy Astley spearheading the project as well as the producers who brought us Chef’s Table, Jason Sterman, David Gelb and Brian McGinn. Sterman, Leanne Dare and Andrew McAllister directed the episodes.

“When I was a kid in the 1950s, in the early 1960s, drawing on camera was a big deal,” says Goldberg. “We had a children’s television host in Philadelphia named Gene London who used to draw at a big drawing board. That was the show. And before that, Winsor McCay, you know, used to draw live on the stage. That was a vaudeville act. So, I feel like it’s all part of a continuum. But I think the thing that really hit home with me about the series and the core of it is that anybody can draw, and anybody can have fun with drawing. You know, I often think that it’s fascinating that human beings are the only animals who were compelled to make a mark on a piece of paper — there are no other creatures on the planet who do that. And so, it’s natural for everybody.”

The series shows how many of the artists came to animation through their own life experiences. Each one comes from a very different place, but they all arrived at Disney with their own way of looking at the art form. The characters they chose to draw for the series have unique meanings for each animator.

“I grew up in a big family,” says Capili. “There were a lot of kids. I was one of maybe four girls, five girls, and Disney was a huge thing in our family. My family is from California, so my dad and aunts and uncles were always back and forth at Disneyland ever since they were kids, since Disneyland opened. So, they brought us, and it was kind of a thing of like, you pick a princess and that’s the princess that you are. One of my cousins was Cinderella and one of my cousins was Mulan. And I never had a princess because, I just didn’t really, I was a very tomboyish kid. I know now that I was a gender nonconforming, queer kid. We didn’t have that language at the time. So, I just didn’t relate until Kuzco.

“There were jokes about how to be a princess, you have to have a villain after you. You have to get trapped. You have to be saved by a man. You have to be in mortal danger. And Kuzco fits all of those. If you go through them, Kuzco fits every single point,” Capili explains. “So, there was just something about him. And that was the first Disney movie that I saw in theaters. I was pulled out of school to go and see it for my birthday. So, Kuzco is so special to me. I’ve seen that movie like a million times, I can quote it line for line. When they asked me to do Sketchbook, I knew immediately that I wanted to do Kuzco.”

The series has a very simple style that focuses on the artist at a desk while they draw, and each animator fills in the background of their approach to drawing. It’s sometimes an unusual place for them to be, after disappearing behind their characters for so long.

“I think one other thing that I would hope that the audience will get is the human aspect of things that are underlying all our films and all characters and everything,” says Lee. “I think I mentioned in the episode, too: Where I feel like I’ve done my best job is when people forget that I exist behind the characters. When they believe and love the characters for themselves. But I think also because there’s so many things that are fast and digital and we take for granted these days, I think it’s also a wonderful way to show that it’s just people behind these things.”

Lee points out that it’s all about the simple pencil line and the pencil stroke. “It doesn’t take anything so completely outrageous to have these things come from nothing,” she notes. It’s just a simple pencil stroke that can start it. I have an 18-month-old daughter right now and she’s just starting to grab a pencil and she just draws little lines, but she still loves that. And I’d love to think that people who watch this can remember that you don’t have to do a lot, just do whatever you feel like and just put it on the page. Sometimes, just starting that can build up into a character, or moment, or film, or dream — or even, for you, just the release of your whole stress from the day. Just letting people know that it’s the freedom and the human aspect and the love that underlies all of it.”

One of the wonderful aspects of the documentary is that it is giving hope to viewers who dream of Disney returning to its 2D animation roots. As Goldberg recently told IndieWire, “I’ve been campaigning for a long time to train up people in hand-drawn [animation], and, as the CG films became more and more popular, that idea became less and less important to the studio. But now we have an atmosphere and a group of people who recognize that’s part of the legacy here, and to actually have content that requires hand-drawn animation is absolutely great. Thank goodness we have people who can do both here, but to actually commit to training up a new generation is a wonderful thing and I think perfectly appropriate for [us].

RSC, Composer Joe Hisaishi Join Forces for ‘Totoro’ Stage Show

As Toho’s adaptation of Spirited Away continues its Japanese tour (streaming on Hulu in July), Britain’s esteemed Royal Shakespeare Company has announced a partnership with honored composer (and longtime Hayao Miyazaki collaborator) Joe Hisaishi to create a stage version of the director’s beloved 1988 animated feature, My Neighbor Totoro. 

Hisaishi will executive produce the show with RSC in partnership with Studio Ghibli, in collaboration with the Improbably theater company and Nippon TV.

The production will be directed by Phelim McDermott (co-Artistic Director, Improbable), adapted by Tom Morton-Smith, with Tom Pye as production designer and puppets by award-winning New York-based puppeteer Basil Twist (Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast and The Addams Family Musical).

The creative team also includes costume designer Kimie Nakano, lighting designer Jessica Hung Han Yun and movement director You-Ri Yamanaka.

While McDermott told Deadline the show will note be a musical, the production will feature a live on-stage band and “it may be that during certain scenes you hear a beautiful voice, like you do in the film.” The ensemble cast will be made of of performers of Japanese, Eash and Southeast Asian heritage (McDermott notes that, due to the physical requirements and puppetry involved, Satsuki and Mei will likely not be played by child actors.)

The director also pointed out that the production will reflect the story’s reverence for nature by using environmentally-friendly materials in the puppets, which should meet with firm environmentalist Miyazaki’s approval.

British playwright Morton-Smith, who traveled to Japan to meet Miyazaki in preparation, revealed that the Oscar-winning animation legend asked if he was a feminist: ”I said ‘yes’ and that was very important to him and that the girls are central.”

My Neighbor Totoro is set in 1950s Japan, and follows sisters Satsuki and Mei who move with their father to a new house in the countryside — and soon discover a secret world of supernatural creatures only children can see. They befriend the gentle forest troll Totoro, who watches over them and leads them on incredible adventures (with the help of the iconic Cat Bus).

Or, as the RSC’s teaser trailer describes it:  “An enchanting coming-of-age story about the transformative power of imagination and the inspiring splendor of the natural world.”

Rehearsals for the ambitious production will begin in July. RSC’s My Neighbor Totoro is scheduled to open at the Barbican Centre in London on October 8 and run through January 21, 2023.

Good Hero, Mediawan Team for ‘Wings of Freedom: Operation Rebirth’

Paris- and N.Y.C.-based Good Hero and leading pan- European media group Mediawan announce development has been greenlit on Good Hero’s first animated feature, Wings of Freedom: Operation Rebirth, following their recently announced strategic partnership agreement.

The movie’s sci-fi storyline was written by Good Hero Co-Founder Laurent Zeitoun (Fireheart, Ballerina a.k.a. Leap!) with the company’s Co-Chief Creative Officer Kiel Murray (Cars, Cars 3, Finding Nemo, Inside Out, Ratatouille, Brave, Up and the upcoming Luck). The original idea for the Wings of Freedom Universe was inspired by an idea from Jonathan Keasey.

Zeitoun is co-writing the script for  Operation Rebirth with Nick Luddington, who is a co-producer and writer on Arcane — the acclaimed
Netflix/Riot Games series which won nine awards at the 49th Annie Awards last month, including: Best Character Design TV/Media for Episode 2: “Some Mysteries Better Left Unsolved,” one of two episodes written by Luddington.

“Nick is a brilliant world and character creator who shares our passion for story and family entertainment, and will be a great creative partner,” said Zeitoun and Good Hero Co-Founder Gregory Ouanhon. “We are also excited to be moving forward on our first joint development project with Mediawan, who believe in this film and the unlimited potential of the Wings of Freedom Universe.”

About the Wings of Freedom Universe:
After Humans turn to AI to combat their global warming problem, the plan backfires when AI drones identify mankind as the main enemy to Earth’s survival. Chip ‘n Dale Crack the Missing Toons Case in New ‘Rescue Rangers’ Trailer

Disney+ released today a new trailer and key art for upcoming original movie Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. ‘ A comeback 30 years in the making,’ the hybrid live-action/CG-animated action-comedy will catch up with the former Disney Afternoon television stars (and many more familiar faces from the tooniverse) in modern-day Los Angeles when it premieres on May 20.

In Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the eponymous chipmunks are living amongst cartoons and humans in the City of Angels, but their lives are quite different now… 

It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voiced by SNL‘s John Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (Andy Sandberg, Palm Springs), meanwhile, has had ‘CGI surgery’ and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend’s life. 

The movie also stars  KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), with Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Eric Bana (Dirty John), Flula Borg (Pitch Perfect 2), Dennis Haysbert (24), Keegan-Michael Key (Schmigadoon!), Tress MacNeille (The Simpsons), Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Seth Rogen (Pam and Tommy), J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos), Chris Parnell (Saturday Night Live).

The film is directed by Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live), written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and is produced by Todd Lieberman (Wonder) and David Hoberman (Beauty and the Beast 2017), with Alexander Young (Extinction) and Tom Peitzman serving as executive producers.

Bill Dubuque Original ‘The Night Gardener’ Takes Root at LAIKA

LAIKA, the studio known for the Academy Award-nominated films Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link, today announced The Night Gardener — an ambitious new stop-motion film project in conjunction with Bill Dubuque, creator of Netflix’s hit series Ozark. LAIKA’s CEO & President Travis Knight, who directed Kubo and the Two Strings and Paramount’s Bumblebee, will direct from Dubuque’s original screenplay.

Adding to the studio’s diverse catalog, The Night Gardener is a gritty neo-noir folktale centered on a young man in rural Missouri fighting to keep his family together in the wake of a tragedy. The film will paint an unflinching portrait of sacrifice, self-reliance and revenge.

The Night Gardener is a beautiful and timeless story that quickens the pulse as often as it breaks the heart,” says Knight. “Bill is a masterful storyteller. He’s crafted a lyrical world layered with complex characters, provocative ideas, and keenly felt emotion. It’s gonna be one helluva movie.”

As previously announced, LAIKA  is currently in production on Wildwood, the first film set in the studio’s hometown of Portland, Oregon. Knight is also directing this film, based on the bestselling fantasy novel written by Colin Meloy, lead singer and songwriter for the rock group The Decemberists.

Bill Dubuque co-wrote the Warner Bros. feature The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, as well as penning The Accountant starring Ben Affleck. Dubuque is also co-creator, writer and executive producer of the Emmy-nominated Netflix crime drama Ozark. Prior to a career in screenwriting, Dubuque worked as a headhunter for over a decade — a profession he turned into the feature film A Family Man, starring Gerard Butler and Willem Dafoe.

LAIKA was founded in 2005 in Oregon by President & CEO Travis Knight. The studio’s five films Coraline (2009), ParaNorman (2012), The Boxtrolls (2014), Kubo and the Two Strings (2016) and Missing Link (2019) have all been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Kubo and the Two Strings won the BAFTA for Best Animated Film and received an additional Oscar nomination for Visual Effects. Missing Link was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Animated Film. LAIKA was awarded a Sci-Tech Oscar in 2016 for its innovation in 3D printing. Recently, the studio announced its first live-action feature film based on the action thriller novel Seventeen by screenwriter John Brownlow.

Ukrainian Refugee Students Enroll at VanArts

As the Government of Canada works to fast-track Ukrainian refugees coming to the country, the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts (VanArts) recognizes that education can make a positive difference in their lives. On March 8, VanArts announced it would be offering 25 full tuition scholarships for Ukrainian refugees. Today, the school shared the cheering news that all 25 scholarships have been awarded, and students are beginning to arrive for in-person classes.

“We are thrilled that 25 Ukrainian refugee students have enrolled at VanArts, and are especially pleased to welcome them in person as they arrive in Vancouver,” said Alan Phillips, VanArts President. “It’s our desire to give this opportunity to Ukrainian refugees, and to provide training that will help them launch a creative and rewarding career in Canada.”

The total tuition amount awarded in scholarships is over $900,000. Students are enrolled in one of the following 12-month diploma programs: 2D Character Animation, 3D Character Animation, Game Art & Design, Professional Photography or Visual Effects for Film & TV. Until the students arrive in Vancouver, they are being supported with access to classes online.

Mariia, who is also from Kyiv and is studying 2D Character Animation, added, “Everyone is so friendly here in Canada. I’m so happy to finally be here.”

Global Event Updates: Inaugural Children’s Emmys, ‘Witcher’ Wins TV Craft BAFTA, ITFS Trickstar Nominees & More

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) today announced the dates, locations and Lifetime Achievement honorees for the 2022 Daytime, Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle, News & Documentary, and Children’s & Family Emmy Award ceremonies. The Academy had previously announced Lifetime Achievement honorees in Sports and Technology & Engineering but had postponed the presentation of those honors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All NATAS events are scheduled to return to being in-person this year following virtual ceremonies in 2020 and 2021.

The 1st Annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards (theemmys.tv/childrens-family-emmy-awards) will be held Sunday, December 11 at the Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles.The first-ever Lifetime Achievement Honoree for Children’s & Family Television is LeVar Burton. The longtime literacy advocate and host of Reading Rainbow, who taught a generation about the joys of reading, has won more than 20 Emmy Awards. Burton currently hosts his own podcast, LeVar Burton Reads, and has a YouTube series, This Is My Story, which highlights racism in America.

Those who want to stay on the cutting edge can also mark their calendars for the 73rd Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards on Monday, April 25 at the Wynn Encore, Las Vegas. Receiving the 2022 Lifetime Achievement award in TV tech will be technology entrepreneur Yvette Kanouff.

BAFTA announced the winners of the 2022 British Academy Television Craft Awards on Sunday, celebrating the very best behind-the-scenes talent of 2021. The ceremony was hosted by Mel Giedroyc, and featured guest presenters including Ade Adepitan, Aisling Bea, Mary Beard, Olivia Colman, Natalie Emmanuel, Prasanna Puwanarajah, Tony Robinson and Harry Trevaldwyn. Crime drama Landscapers and musical comedy We Are Lady Parts scored the most wins with three each.

The award for Special, Visual & Graphic Effects went to Netflix fantasy adaptation The Witcher, specifically S2 premiere episode “A Grain of Truth,” which sees Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Ciri (Freya Allan) break up the toxic relationship between the cursed beast-man Nivellen (Game of Thrones‘ Kristofer Hivju) and a bloodthirsty Bruxa (Agnes Born). The award went to Dadi Einarsson, Gavin Round, Aleksandar Pejic, Oliver Cubbage, Stefano Pepin and Jet Omoshebi, representing the teams at Cinesite, Hivemind, Platige Image and Pioneer Stillking Images.

Also nominated were Earth at Night in Colour (Apple TV+), Intergalactic (Sky One) and Black Holes: Heart of Darkness (BBC Two). ITFS

The 29th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film (ITFS) announced the nominees for the Trickstar Professional Awards, which will be presented at a gala on the evening of Wed., May 4 during the German animation celebration (May 3-8, itfs.de/en).

The Trickstar Business Award honors animation companies and projects with an innovative and groundbreaking business model. The €7,500 prize is sponsored by the Verband Region Stuttgart. The 2022 nominees are: interactive museum series ArtMinute (Die Asta Experience, Zentropa Prod.), AR installation Colored (Noire) (Novaya), VR experience Yullbe GO (Mack NeXT, KG). The projects will be presented May 7 in the ONLINE PRO section.

The German Animation Screenplay Award for an animated feature film bestows a €2,500 prize, sponsored by Animation Media Cluster Region Stuttgart (AMCRS). The award for the German screenplay with the biggest international market potential (€1,500) is sponsored by Pink Parrot Media. The nominees are Bird of the Year (Wolfgang Lauenstein, Christoph Lauenstein), Dino Mite (Armin Prediger, Andreas Völlinger), Little Miss Santa (Jasmina Kallay), Mr. Wiggles (André Heeger) and The (Mostly) Marvelous Murray (Christian Kaps).

The Animated Games Award Germany 2022 for the best and most innovative animation-based computer game from Germany comes with a cash prize of €5,000, sponsored by MFG Medien- und Filmgesellschaft Baden-Württemberg. The nominees are: A Juggler’s Tale (kaleidoscube / Mixtvision Mediengesellschaft), Minute of Islands (Studio Fizbin / Mixtvision Mediengesellschaft), Dorfromantik (Toukana Interactive), OMNO (Studio Inkyfox UG) and Lacuna (DigiTales Interactive / Assemble Entertainment).

SIFF closed out its 48th Seattle International Film Festival Sunday, announcing the winners of the 2022 Golden Space Needle Audience and Juried Competition Awards. The awards were presented at a ceremony and brunch held at Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Seattle on April 24. The 11-day festival, which began April 14, screened 263 films, including 28 world premieres (15 features/13 short films). Animated winners included:

Exclusive: ‘Undone’ S2 Returns to a Mystical Realm

When we last saw Alma (Rosa Salazar), the heroine of Amazon Studios and Tornante Productions’ boundary-pushing Undone, she was in Mexico, waiting to be reunited with her father Jacob (Bob Odenkirk). Fans of the show will be happy to know that there are more mysterious events and beautiful animation in store in the second season of the entertaining series, debuting on Prime Video on Friday, April 29. At the helm are creators, exec producers & showrunners Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg, with director/production designer Hisko Hulsing, the award-winning creator of acclaimed shorts Seventeen and Junkyard.

The second season is also a blend of rotoscopy and 2D animation, courtesy of the teams at Austin-based Minnow Mountain and Amsterdam’s Submarine. “We were actually writing the second season as we were finishing production on the first pre-COVID lockdown,” says Bob-Waksberg, who is also the Emmy-nominated creator of the acclaimed Netflix toon BoJack Horseman and exec producer of Tuca & Bertie. “We were supposed to start production in 2020, but then we ended up filming the second season during COVID and were able to deliver the second season in January.”

Expanding the Mystery

Purdy says she was grateful to come back and continue to work with everyone who made the first season such a compelling watch. “It was a joy to be able to pick up where we left off with our collaborators, all the writers and animators, actors and our director Hisko, and just continue that process and deepen these relationships that we had already built during the first season,” she notes.

Bob-Waksberg chimes in, “Yes, I think the challenge and the joy from a creative standpoint was, how do we build on what we did before and not feel like we’re repeating what we did in season one, and not lose what’s special about season one — and maybe discover some new special things? It was also important to go to new places and try different kinds of stories that still fit in the world of our show.”

Purdy also points out that she is quite pleased with the way they were able to build up the main character’s relationship with her sister in the second season. “We get to learn more about Becca’s abilities this year, so we also witness how Alma and Becca (voiced by Angelique Cabral) grow as a result of their relationship.”

Remote from Amsterdam

One of the impacts of the pandemic on the production was that director Hulsing, who’s based in Amsterdam, was unable to fly to L.A. to oversee the live-action shoots. “Season one felt as if we were building a car while driving it, constantly inventing new techniques and solving problems while being in production,” he recalls. “At the end of season one, it was a well-oiled machine. All artists in all departments — the oil painters, the roto artists, the animators — had had one and a half years to train themselves, improve and reach very high levels of quality. So, I figured that our second season would feel like driving a Maserati on cruise control!”

He adds, “Then COVID came along and it became very uncertain if we could make the second season at all. We actually did some motion-capture tests with Rosa Salazar in a garage in Hollywood and we tried to rebuild her face in 3D, but we entered a very uncanny valley! Noel Bright and Steven Cohen from Tornante Productions luckily came up with a way to shoot it in a similar way as the first season, by testing the crew and actors on a daily basis. And we came up with a way to simplify the shoots. We had to work with a very well-organized, but super small skeleton crew of five people on set, who had to work like beasts!”

Hulsing had to resort to directing the crew from his own studio in Amsterdam, with a nine-hour time difference. “It had to be prepared even more carefully than season one,” he adds. “So on top of storyboarding all 3,000 shots, we also created 3D previz that was overlaid on top of the two camera views so that our DOP Nick Ferreiro and his team and [producer] Patrick Metcalf, who was leading the set in person, could communicate with me all the time. I was watching four monitors with camera A, camera B, previz streams, storyboards and scripts from 4 p.m. until 4 a.m. each day and directing our artists in Amsterdam, before 4 p.m.! Because of the complex methodology, which involved shooting actors in greenscreen studios and then later painting in all the environments with oil paint, it was of the highest order to get everything right, so we wouldn’t waste time and resources.”

The show’s distinctive look is created by mixing rotoscopy and hand-painted animation, with production duties split between Minnow Mountain (Austin, TX) and Submarine (Amsterdam).

Despite all the challenges, Hulsing feels that the sophomore season is both aesthetically and technically better than the first. “This season has a very different approach than the first and it feels very fresh, without damaging the emotional truth behind it … We found ways in every department to improve all skills, taking off from where we left season one. Our showrunners Kate Purdy and Raphael Bob-Waksberg and their writers have written pretty genius stuff once again!”

The show creators also agree that mixing hand-painted animation and rotoscopy has been the perfect way to tell this ethereal tale. As Purdy puts it, “All of our artists are bringing so much empathy and heart and soul to the project, and the fact that so much of it is actually handmade plays a big part in conveying the emotions of the show. I think you feel all of that. Of course, in terms of the themes of the show, we’re exploring the nature of reality. Our visuals sort of look and feel close to reality — but they are living in that artistic, imaginative space. The animation feels more representative of the emotion of reality than a physical photoreal depiction.”

Two Distinct Reactions

Bob-Waksberg says he has also been very surprised and pleased by the way the show has reached out to those who don’t follow animation. “I’ve heard from people who had perhaps avoided animated shows in the past,” he says. “Maybe they thought animation was just for kids or it was just used for goofy comedy. I hope our show makes people realize that there are all kinds of amazing stories out there that are being told through this amazing medium of animation.”

Purdy says the response from audiences has been quite fascinating. “I get two different kinds of responses,” she says. “Some people tell me that they suffer from mental illness or anxiety or depression or OCD, or have a relative who does. Then, there are others who tell me they’re spiritualists and hear angels and voices, so the mystical elements resonate with them. This is part of the central mission of the show, which asks: Is Rosa experiencing what is known as the ‘unseen world’, or is it mental illness? The show sets out to ask questions and sort of says: This is something we don’t quite understand, and let’s explore it through these characters. It’s an artform that you bring your own personal perspectives to and interact with from your own point of view. Hopefully, that will create more empathy and we can see that there are so many perspectives and different answers in the world. So, maybe we should be open to other people’s interpretations.”

The second season of Undone premieres on Prime Video on Friday, April 29.
