Cartoon Network today announced the expansion of its Climate Champions campaign, aimed at giving kids tools and resources to take action on climate change. The initiative, in step with the network’s Redraw Your World tagline, empowering kids to positively impact change in the world, initially kicked off in EMEA last year, inspiring more than 95,000 kids to sign up and take on more than 830,000 challenges to-date.
Music prodigy Nandi Bushell introduced the initiative this Earth Day (Friday, April 22) with a special message about the importance of climate activism to post across Cartoon Network’s social channels. Bushell will also be featured as part of a social media campaign throughout the year to challenge fans from around the globe to become Climate Champions.
“Climate Champions was created to inspire kids to take small steps in their own lives and collectively make a big difference in the fight against climate change,” said Tricia Melton, Chief Marketing Officer, Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults & Classics. “We saw the incredible success of EMEA’s efforts with the thousands of participants that signed up last summer to do their part for the environment, and now we have the opportunity to build on that with this ongoing intiative.”
Climate Champions will continue to roll out with the launch of a dedicated U.S. microsite through CartoonNetwork.com this summer that will include over 100 challenges, quizzes, games and videos with a focus on activism, art and science. Daily challenges will be crafted to motivate young people to enact changes at home, school, and in their local communities taking on small challenges that can make a world of difference to the health of our planet.
Additionally, an expansion of the campaign timed to the UN Climate Change Conference this November will launch to help kids find their climate calling. Toolkits will be available to assist in personal projects ranging from letter writing for activists, do-it-yourself tutorials for artists to create their own upcycled materials, and links to projects for citizen scientists.
Additional support this Earth Day includes a series of educational videos with favorite Cartoon Network characters doing their part to clean up the planet that will roll out bi-weekly leading up to the U.S. microsite launch, all available on CN’s Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. The news that Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter and is expecting to lose 2 million more in upcoming months has resulted in a price drop of over 37% in the streamer’s stock prices for the first time in a decade. The company will be cracking down on password-sharing and looking into launching an ad-supported tier in the Disney+ and HBO Max model to remedy some of its financial woes. However, according to some financial analysts, this may only be a temporary solution as many will cancel their accounts if the sub prices continue to go up.
Experts also point out that building an advertising-based model will take time to succeed since sponsors will need to know how many of a streamer’s subscribers have seen their commercials and would need to have subscriber profile details and more transparency about numbers and audiences from Netflix.
The news also impacted other streaming entities such as Roku, Disney, WarnerMedia, Discovery, and Paramount Global all suffered drops in their trading value. Just hours ago (Thursday), Discovery announced that it will shut down CNN+, the streaming service that had been presented as the news outlet’s bid for a bright digital future, by the end of April.
Meanwhile, a recent article at TheWrap noted that Phil Rynda, the studio’s Director of Creative Leadership & Development for Original Animation, was let go this week, along with several of his staff. The story also asserted that the Kids & Family division at Netflix Animation has undergone significant changes. Among the various items reported in the piece was that the adaptation of Jeff Smith’s comic-book series Bone has been canceled. However, according to our sources, the project may still be happening at the streamer.
The report also points out that Netflix will be investing more in projects like DreamWorks’ Boss Baby series, which deliver bigger numbers and rely on more recognizable IPs than prestige shows like Elizabeth Ito’s Peabody Award-nominated City of Ghosts and Megan Nicole Dong’s Centaurworld, both of which carry a 100% rating on critical review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Full-service entertainment production company Subtle Insight Entertainment (subtleinsightent.com) is bringing Hollywood-quality film/TV production and artist management to California’s Inland Empire, a groundbreaking way for industry veteran and company founder Henry Jones III to open film industry access and high-quality production to underrepresented communities.
The Inland Empire is home to more than 11% of California’s population and is one of the fastest-growing population areas in the country. But, the center of the entertainment industry is in Los Angeles, where most auditions take place. Simply fighting traffic is just one of the barriers that aspiring actors, musicians, storytellers and film directors from the Inland Empire face.
“As a Black business owner, and as someone who has spent years in the business, I know how difficult it is to break through,” Jones said. “I don’t want others to struggle like I had to, so I am creating a space and opportunity for others who have the same aspirations but not the same access. I am striving to uplift my community through Subtle Insight Entertainment by providing high-quality area talent with local representation.”

Vitality by Emilie Mereghetti (Tant Mieux Prod.) is selected for Animafest’s Children 15+ competition
World Festival of Animated Film – Animafest Zagreb 2022 (June 6-11, animafest.hr) announced the films selected for the Films for Children Competition. The central event of the rich Animafest Zagreb 2022 Children and Youth Program, the competition is made up of an international selection of 41 films. The selection includes warmly received festival favorites like Franzy’s Soup Kitchen (Ana Chubinidze), Suzie in the Garden (Lucie Sunková), Elevator Alone (Anastasia Papadopoulou) and My Grandmother Is an Egg (Wu-Ching Chang).
The films were preselected by Nino Kovačić and selected by the Slovenian media psychologist Martina Peštaj, editor of Children and Youth Programming with Radio Television Slovenia, who categorized the entries into sections for four age groups (3-6 years, 7-10, 11-14, 15+). “Space Nomblers” by Kris Theorin was the winner of the Infinite Journeys challenge.
Maxon congratulated Kris Theorin and Euan Morrison on winning Clinton Jones (a.k.a. PWNISHER)’s latest 3D community creative challenge: Infinite Journeys. With more than 2,000 entries, the YouTube contest challenged 3D artists to build their own custom scenes based on only the phrase ‘infinite journeys’ and the stipulation that the animation must contain a moving vehicle.
At the conclusion of the contest, Clinton merged all the entries together to create an epic character-based 3D travel montage, then parsed out the top 100 (watch here) to ultimately land on first, second, third, fourth, and fifth place winners. In the end, 2,448 artists worked for a collective 18.8 years over 30 days to create nearly three hours of infinite journeys.
The winning render follows a “Space Nomblers” idea. Featuring a purple-haired character feeding a likewise purple creature in space (ending in a delightful surprise), Theorin says his scene is “a cross between the turret fight scene from Star Wars: A New Hope and the Luma feeding mechanic from Super Mario Galaxy.”

DreamWorks Animation’s latest big screen romp The Bad Guys looks to be making good, scoring mostly positive reviews ahead of its U.S. theatrical opening this Friday, April 22 (Universal Pictures). The painterly CGI flick has earned a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (44 reviews), while MetaCritic’s smaller sampling of more mixed critical reactions (11) adds up to a MetaScore of 58 so far. Positive points go to the film’s stylized animation, humor and homages to classic heist movies.
Based on the books by Aaron Blabey and marking the feature directorial debut of Pierre Perifel (Bilby), The Bad Guys centers on five infamous friends: Dashing pickpocket Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), seen-it-all safecracker Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), chill master-of-disguise Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), short-fused “muscle” Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos) and sharp-tongued expert hacker Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina), a.k.a. “Webs.” When the gang is caught, they agree to “go good” — or rather, pretend to. Under the tutelage of Professor Marmalade (Richard Ayoade), they learn how to act upright … but could true redemption be possible?
Heading into U.S. release, The Bad Guys is expected to score $15 million at the box-office this weekend, competing for family audiences with the Sonic the Hedgehog and Fantastic Beasts sequels in their third and second weekends. The movie, which has already been released in major territories outside the U.S. (it opened in the U.K. on April 1st), has made over $52,756,316 worldwide to date.
Read all about how DreamWorks created this artfully crafted action-comedy in Animation Magazine‘s May ’22 cover story on The Bad Guyshere.
The Bad Guys
Here is a quick look at what critics are saying:
“There’s a lot to like about this movie, partly because it’s got decent female characters who kick butt in genuinely interesting and non-cliched ways … If we are being honest, The Bad Guys relies on some secondhand plot developments and double-crosses that you can see coming from the moon. That said, the five-year-old sitting next to me whooped with glee watching a horde of zombified guinea pigs swarm a bridge — and gave the whole movie a score of 10 stars out of five.”
“Though Blabey’s witty, sketchy illustration style has been given a sleeker makeover in its digitally animated transfer to the big screen, The Bad Guys nonetheless benefits from a spikier, more overtly cartoonish aesthetic than many of its more smoothly contoured DreamWorks brethren. Lively character design does as much work as the writing in warming us to a core crew of critters who — dashing silver-pelted ringleader Mr. Wolf aside — get somewhat short shrift in a busy, breakneck screenplay by Etan Cohen (returning to animation 14 years after Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa).”
“The animation — particularly during the plentiful action sequences, and especially during the car chases — is sharp and fast and wonderful to watch. As in the Ocean’s movies, there are some nifty edits that bring sophistication to the look of the film, despite some stumbles … Still, it’s clever, visually interesting and very, very funny. Even when the humor goes lowbrow, it makes narrative sense. A joke about flatulence is a lot funnier when it’s essential to the plot. The Bad Guys gets that.”
“In this age of super-smooth CGI animation, Perifel quaintly opts for a more Saturday-morning-TV aesthetic of a prime Hanna-Barbera vintage. That said, in its throwback, kinetic frenzy, this DreamWorks film does suffer from a lack of emotional momentum … At times, [it] feels like they’re having more fun in the ADR booth than we are watching it on screen. But there are gags aplenty (some of them are even funny), a surreal chase climax involving an unfinished motorway, a helicopter, a meteorite and a lethal tidal wave of hypnotized guinea pigs. Like the film’s premise suggests, nothing this fun-looking can be all bad.”

Versatile Media Ltd. has confirmed the location of its new Vancouver, Canada film studio, which will include multiple soundstages, both traditional and LED, totaling 43,000 square feet purpose-built for live-action filming. The film complex in South Burnaby near Marine Way will house Versatile’s first permanent virtual production LED volume in Canada, which promises to be one of the largest feature-rich LED stages in North America. Versatile will take occupancy of the building in December 2022.
The location will provide a traditional soundstage as well as coinciding amenities including paint and sawmill, dedicated costume areas, general offices space and parking to accommodate a full production. The new building will complete the full-cycle virtual production pipeline service that Versatile Media has been developing over the past five years.
In 2021, Versatile opened its Canadian headquarters on Pandora Street offering performance capture and visualization stages embracing the industry’s drive towards real-time production. Services offered include virtual location scouting, previz, techviz and stuntviz, enabling full editorial of sequences and camera blocking for principle photography. The Burnaby location will complete their services, offering an end-to-end virtual production and LED stage workflow to the global industry.
“Filmmakers are embracing Virtual production to better serve the creative process. We want to empower filmmakers and expand the limits of what is possible with our technology,” explained Steve Read, VP and Head of Studio for Versatile Media Ltd, Canada. “Our ultimate goal is to accelerate and nurture great storytelling and allow film production to catch up to the tremendous changes of distribution demanded by its appetite for global content.”
This journey to the cutting edge began when Versatile Media founder & CEO Leo Lee completed his first feature film as a director, and started developing solutions for filmmakers to release the creative process from any technical limitations. The company began to invest heavily in technology that would augment the filmmaking process — at first, for internal use, but now for the wider industry.
Not Just Another LED Stage
Versatile’s Vancouver LED volume will comprise 12,000 LED panels creating a 270-degree cylindrical volume spanning nearly 90 ft (27.5 meters) diameter with a connected flat ceiling at 30 ft (9 meters) and will integrate Epic’s Unreal Engine and powered by NVIDIA GPU technology (learn more about this collaboration at Versatile’s NAB Conference presentations). The research and development team have worked tirelessly to fully resolve the moiré effect, allowing the Versatile LED panels to be filmed from any angle while in focus and up to 6 ft (2 meters) proximity of the panels.
Other core cinematography features include zero latency camera tracking, filming up to 8k resolution at 120 fps, integrated virtual and physical DMX lighting console for creative lighting and color management as well as integrated camera focus pull, allowing DPs to adjust focal length as part of the brain-bar system.
“After we developed the technology, we realized how it could empower filmmakers everywhere,” said Lee. “Film is a collaborative art. Going global is about making it possible for the best talent everywhere to work together to create better end products. We are breaking down the barriers between animation and live action workflows so that talented artists from both industries can cross over and participate, to create more potential for storytelling. I look forward to seeing exciting creative work produced in our Vancouver studios and seeing our global industry embrace new filmmaking techniques.”
The building complex is being developed by Beedie, Western Canada’s largest private industrial developer and property manager, to be completed by late 2022 and ready for productions by early 2023. Founded in 1954, Beedie has traditionally specialized in the development of state-of-the-art industrial business parks and build-to-suit facilities having customized space for both national and international companies to meet its clients’ present and future building requirements.
“Versatile Media’s LED sound stage center represents the first purpose-built LED film stages in Beedie’s portfolio. With the continued growth of film in BC, we’re very excited to welcome Versatile and look forward to supporting their continued growth,” said Blake Asselstine, Vice President, Asset Management with Beedie
Built-to-Suit LED film stages
Going Global
In addition to the Vancouver stages, Versatile’s global initiatives will also see the construction of a 12 acre film base in Hangzhou where, among other installations, five LED volumes will be built — in addition to their two existing LED stages, as well as capture and visualization stages.
As a filmmaker who has worked in the entertainment & advertising industry for over 30 years, CEO/Founder Lee has served in many capacities, from CG artist to cameraman, director and screenwriter, and thus brought his varied experience into the design of Versatile’s technology. Today, the company’s goals are to contribute to the technological transformation taking place, empower filmmakers everywhere and to bring audiences completely new experiences.
Versatile Media Ltd. is a global media company founded in 1993. The company has over 450 creative and technical artists and R&D staff, globally.

The award winners of the GLAS 2022 online animation festival were announced today, highlighting an inspiring 7th edition of the Berkeley, California-based event. This year’s jury included Lou Bones (Creative Talent Director, Psyop; U.K.), Cristóbal León (director, The Wolf House; Chile) and Tomek Popakul (director, Acid Rain; Poland), who also participated in special talks during the festival.
… And if you haven’t caught all the sessions and screenings offered at GLAS this year, worry not: Passes are still available and all programming will be online until April 30. (Register here.) A special “Best Of” screening of all the award winners has been added to the lineup.
Noir Soleil (Special Mention)
GLAS 2022 Award Winners:
Grand Prix — Pests by Juliette Laboria (France)
Jury Statement: “Juicy, atmospheric, sensual movie. You feel the heat, the garden, stickiness of the fruits. Precise observation focused on depiction of everyone’s universal experience brings inter-species micro-drama. Tale of innocence, cruelty and revenge, all during a kids’ garden party. Are there always, somewhere, worlds burning in flames?”
Special Mention (Int’l Competition) — Noir Soleil by Marie Larrivé (France)
Jury Statement: “This is a short film that looks like a feature film. You could also say it’s an animation that could be live-action. But the truth is that it is a film that defines its own rules and invents a genre of its own. When a corpse floats to the surface, it is we who dive into a world of ambiguous and subtle sensations. The almost impressionistic quality of the images is perfect to describe a world of truths and feelings that remain out of focus.”
Ghost Dogs
High Risk Award — Ghost Dogs by Joe Cappa (U.S.)
Jury Statement: “Immediately intriguing (helped by some fantastic music+sound design), this off-kilter film straddles the cute, known lives of man’s best friend and the very surreal. The color palette, character design of the Ghost Dogs along with the edit adds to a certain uneasiness but you can’t tear your eyes away! Gradually building in pace as the trip intensifies and dimensions blur to a sick little twist at the end.”
Goodbye Jérôme!
New Talent Award — Goodbye Jérôme! by Gabrielle Selnet, Adam Sillard & Chloé Farr (Gobelins, France)
Jury Statement: “You want to put every shot into a picture frame and hang it on your wall. Visionary and done with highest craftsmanship, with quirky and balanced narration, using all animation magic tricks to tell a surrealistic breakup story, with no answer, no relief. The only thing you are sure of — you are completely lost.”
Audience Award — Sierra by Sander Joon (Estonia)
Luce and the Rock
Family Competition Award — Luce and the Rock by Britt Raes (Belgium)
Jury Statement: “A lot of thought has gone into the production of this wonderful film. The fun and inventive use of shape, light and color throughout is thoroughly engaging. The relationships and emotions the story covers are dealt with subtlety while excellent sound design, music/song and voice acting keep the story moving along as the hugely endearing Luce and her village encounter an unexpected visitor.”
Homebird
Family Special Mention — Homebird by Ewa Smyk (U.K.)
Jury Statement: “Elegant, modest movie with tasteful ‘claire-ligne’ visuals about finding peace within yourself on the transition from rural to urban life, the past and the present, full of romantic Eastern European nostalgia.”
Tennis Ball on His Day Off
U.S. Competition Award — Tennis Ball on His Day Off by Julian Glander
Jury Statement: “The juxtaposition of the tennis ball character facing the reality of our modern lives as the world ticks by is both unsettling and deeply relatable… Use of a voice machine message to tell the story creates further separation and helps to encapsulate the dissociative states we find ourselves in more and more these days. Great use of surreal low poly CG design and color. The tertiary characters are annoyingly clever and to the point while the vacant scenes build the mood and heightened sense of time passing … or wasted.”
Menagerie
U.S. Competition Special Mention — Menagerie by Jack Gray
Jury Statement: “What is this short film about? It is difficult to say. More than a story, this short film is a landscape-film, a world that we can contemplate in detail. Like dreams, Menagerie is made of contemporary everyday life, transformed and metabolized to create a universe with a particular engineering. It is a short film that seems to flow with the naturalness and ease of a sketchbook, as if someone had animated it while talking on the phone, which is extremely difficult to achieve in animation.
