“Vancouver is a fantastic production hub where we’ve received a lot of interest from our clients who want a StageCraft volume in British Columbia. It was a natural next step for our expansion,” noted Janet Lewin, SVP, and General Manager of ILM adding, “Our existing Vancouver visual effects studio is perfectly positioned to support virtual production and the new stage.”

“Our Canadian artists have contributed to digital set construction as well as Virtual Art Department work on a number of StageCraft projects so it’s really exciting that we will soon have a volume in our own backyard,” said Spencer Kent, Executive in Charge of ILM’s Vancouver studio. “I’m also proud that we are actively recruiting with an eye towards hiring people from underrepresented communities who we can train in the field of virtual production, strengthening our commitment to diversifying our industry. This effort will be bolstered when we launch our upcoming Jedi Training Academy in January.”

ILM won two Emmy Awards for their innovative real-time visual effects work for the first two seasons of Lucasfilm’s hit Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. They are currently in production on three episodic series and a feature film on their existing StageCraft volumes, in addition to daily bookings for smaller productions including commercials, music videos and product marketing pieces.

ILM also builds bespoke StageCraft volumes for projects with unique requirements such as George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky and Taika Waititi’s upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, which were built on stages in London and Sydney, respectively. In addition, Disney Television Studios and ILM announced recently the opening of an additional StageCraft LED volume on the Disney lot in Burbank, built for episodic television production.

ILM intends for the Vancouver StageCraft volume to be operational in the spring of 2022. Trailer: ‘Turning Red’ Introduces Heartthrob Boy Band 4*Town

Disney and Pixar have launched a new trailer and key art for Oscar-winning Bao short film director Domee Shi’s feature animation debut, Turning Red. In  the preview, puberty takes a very hairy turn for our young heroine, and audiences are introduced to the film’s take on that classic element of growing up: Boy band mania. The studios also announced additions to the film’s voice cast.

According to Shi, if you set a 13-year-old girl’s coming-of-age story in the early 2000s, it’s pretty much mandatory to include a boy band. “We needed our character Mei to be obsessed with something that her mom would not approve of,” said Shi. “Boy bands were the first step into the world of boys for a lot of girls that age. The guys were all super pretty, polished, soft and loving, and they had of way of bringing girls and their besties together. Plus, I thought it’d be really cool to create an animated boy band.”

Enter Pixar’s first-ever boy band, 4*Town. Filmmakers called on Grammy-winning singer-songwriters Billie Eilish and FINNEAS to write the fictional band’s songs — three in total, including the song “Nobody Like U” featured in the new trailer.

“When we first started talking about Billie Eilish and FINNEAS — back before they’d won a billion Grammys —we could see then how they had their finger on the pulse,” said producer Lindsey Collins. “We were big fans. We met with them and pitched this crazy idea of a boy band, asking if they’d be interested in writing and producing the songs. They were!”

Eilish, whose sophomore album, “Happier Than Ever,” debuted at No. 1 in the Billboard 200 in the U.S. and in 19 countries worldwide, made history as the youngest artist to win in all the major categories at the 62nd Grammy Awards, receiving an award for best new artist, album of the year, record of the year, song of the year and best pop vocal album.

FINNEAS, the youngest ever to win the Grammy for producer of the year (non-classical), built a sterling discography penning and producing smashes for a cadre of superstars — not only for his sister, Billie Eilish, but also Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, Tove Lo, Kid Cudi and Ben Platt, among others. His debut solo album “Optimist” is out now.

Grammy-, Oscar- and Emmy-winning Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (Black Panther, The Mandalorian) is composing the score for Turning Red. “I’ve been a fan of his for a while,” said Shi. “We were drawn to his versatility — he’s a composer, but he also produces pop music. We knew he would help us create a very unique sound.”

Joining previously announced Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh, who lend their voices to Mei and her mother Ming, are Orion Lee as the voice of Mei’s dad, Jin, and Wai Ching Ho as the voice of Grandma. Mei’s tight knit group of friends are voiced by Ava Morse as Miriam, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Priya and Hyein Park as Abby. Tristan Allerick Chen voices classmate Tyler and Addie Chandler lends his voice to Mei’s secret crush, Devon. Providing the harmonious voices of the members of 4*Town are Jordan Fisher, Grayson Villanueva, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo and Finneas O’Connell. Rounding out the voice cast are James Hong, Lori Tan Chinn, Lillian Lim, Mia Tagano, Sherry Cola, Sasha Roiz and Lily Sanfelippo.

Synopsis: Turning Red introduces Mei Lee (Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda!

Turning Red releases on March 11, 2022.

BRIC TV Launches Its First Animated Series ‘The United Space of America’

BRIC, a leading arts and media institution anchored in Downtown Brooklyn whose work spans contemporary visual and performing arts, media and civic action, announced the debut of The United Space of America, a six-part mixed media web series airing on BRIC TV beginning Tuesday, November 16.

Set around the time of the 2020 Presidential election, The United Space of America blends social commentary and current events with dark, witty satire — all set against a wacky, intergalactic sci-fi backdrop. The production is BRIC TV’s first-ever animated series and stars William D. Caballero and Elaine Del Valle. The creator/producer duo previously worked together to bring Gran’pa Know Best to HBO Latino. Del Valle is also currently guest-starring on the new ABC series Queens.

The show follows Paco Del Pluto and Cornelius Cosmosis — two elderly astronauts from Brooklyn who have been adrift in space for over 30 years —  as they finally make contact with Earth. Horrified by the current state of American affairs, the duo refuses to go back to a world they no longer understand, and instead decide to explore the galaxy to find a more enlightened alien civilization to live with. As the two come into contact with various quirky intergalactic societies, they discover one painful truth: the same political and social problems plaguing America today are abundant throughout the cosmos.

“I created The United Space of America because I was frustrated and comically amused by the absurdities of today’s overly-zealous ‘patriots’ who inhabit both the extreme ends of the political sphere in America,” said Caballero. “By showcasing these buffoons as caricatured alien ambassadors, whose polarized ideologies at the planetary level are easily scrutinized and dismantled by a pair of crotechedy elderly astronauts of color, the show allows us all to laugh at ourselves, whether liberal or conservative. This quirky web series is my creative and comic response to the increasing divisiveness taking hold in this land that I love, from sea to shining sea, with liberty and political satire for all.”

Kuye Youngblood, General Manager at BRIC TV, added, “We are thrilled to bring this brilliant vision from William Caballero and the art of animation to BRIC TV with this timely and darkly witty production. BRIC TV is committed to telling stories that speak to the conditions of our world and supporting independent filmmakers through innovative storytelling that both captivate the viewer and cause them to contemplate. We hope you’ll join us on this intergalactic mission!”

The United Space of America’s cast features Caballero as Paco Del Pluto and Cornelius Cosmosis, Del Valle as Galaxandria, Victor Cruz as Planet Rockalock Ambassador, Leopold Nunan as Planet Pansexion Ambassador, Cammie Middleton as Planet Freedom Ambassador (voice) and Ron Nery Jr. as Planet Freedom Ambassador (actor).

The production’s crew includes creator/writer/director/co-producer Caballero; executive producers Kecia Élan Cole, Kuye Youngblood and Aziz Isham; producer Del Valle; post production supervisor Steve de Sève; 3D models by Chang Kim; 3D rigging by Stephen Mann; space shuttle designer Roy Greenwood and graphics intern Emily Kinser.

William D. Caballero is a multimedia filmmaker, 2021 Creative Capital Award Recipient, and 2018 Guggenheim Fellow. His animated films, which feature 3D printed and composite figures, have screened at the Sundance Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art, and have premiered on major networks such as HBO, PBS and Univision.

Elaine Del Valle garnered critical acclaim as actress and playwright of her one-woman show, Brownsville Bred, which depicted her true New York-Puerto Rican coming-of-age story in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Having studied acting at Carnegie Hall under the tutelage of legendary acting teacher Wynn Handman, Del Valle’s passion to advance Latino portrayals in film, TV and stage led to her work behind the scenes. Elaine’s most recent acting role is as a recurring guest star in the new ABC series Queens.

BRIC TV is based in Brooklyn, NY and both Caballero and Del Valle, hail from the borough — Coney Island and Brownsville respectively.

TV & Streaming News: Trailers, Casting, Sales & the Marvel Toon That Never Was

Brad Graeber, co-founder, CEO & CCO of Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Seis Manos, Blood of Zeus) took to Twitter this weekend to reveal the studio’s pitch for a never-produced project, which was almost the first Marvel animated series before What If…? came to fruition. Dubbed Marvel Era, the concept was in the works from 2012-2013 in anticipation of the comics publisher’s 75th anniversary in 2014.

“The idea was short stories for each decade of Marvel History — and to have each short inspired by the art/animation of that ‘era,'” Graeber wrote. The studio head wrote 14 or so rough concepts, including a ’40s Captain America/D-Day story in a Fleischer Studios style, a Submariner U-Boat story, a ’60s X-Men tale featuring a cult leader mutant, a Luke Cage/Iron Fist team up inspired by ’70s cinema, an ’80s drug kingpin thriller for Punisher and a Deadpool twist on “cheesy ’90s cartoons.”

‘Dogs in Space’: Jeremiah Cortez Explores the Pawsome Frontier

***This article originally appeared in the December ’21 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 315)***

If you’re a dog fan or enjoy clever, animated shows about space adventures, then you must mark your calendars for the debut of the delightful new 10 x 19-minute series Dogs in Space in November. Created by newcomer Jeremiah Cortez, the show follows a group of genetically enhanced pooches that have been sent to space to find a new home for humanity!

Jeremiah Cortez
Jeremiah Cortez

The idea for the show started as a little comic in a sketchbook Cortez kept during his senior year of college at Laguna College of Art and Design. “It was just a small crew of four dogs having a space adventure,” he recalls. “It was the constant request from my peers and coworkers for more panels to the story that kept me working on it.”

For two years, Cortez worked on creating the pitch bible, character designs, concept art, animatics and even the theme song (which is now the official theme song of the show).”A lot of my inspiration came from sitcoms like Frasier, 30 Rock and Parks and Rec,” he says. “Sitcoms heavily influenced the show along with the sci-fi element, which was influenced primarily by Star Trek: The Next Generation. Adventure Time is also a huge inspiration, because it did something that I thought had never been done before: They played with the viewers and their expectations.”

Landing the Meeting

Soon after Cortez finished his pitch material, his friend Raymond Giron (who also wrote the show’s theme song and is now a composer on the show) introduced him to a Netflix executive, and he scored an in-person pitch meeting at the streamer.

“Until we got the greenlight, I was working very hard to make sure the show was everything I pitched to Netflix, but I didn’t allow myself to get too excited,” recalls the creator. “Even after greenlight, I was still very careful not to get too excited, for some reason. I still feel like I’m holding back some of that excitement. I truly don’t think I’ll allow myself to fully feel the excitement until season one is officially out for the world to see!”

Dogs in Space

Dogs in Space, which is also exec produced by animation veteran Adam Henry (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Random! Cartoons) features the voices of Haley Joel Osment, Sarah Chalke, Kimiko Glenn, Chris Parnell, Debra Wilson, William Jackson Harper and David López, among others. The show’s animation is produced by Atomic Cartoons. “Most of pre-production was done in L.A., and production and post-production was a combination of both studios,” says Cortez. “The art department and editing were done here in L.A. Storyboards were done by two teams in L.A. and one team in Canada.”

Cortez says he tried to include as many real-life canine references in the project as possible. “Some of my dogs made it into the show, along with so many of the crew and cast,” he tells us. “It was always part of the plan that if the show ever got picked up I wanted to give something back to the people that worked on the show. So, we tried to feature as many dogs from the people who worked on the series with us — from the people at Netflix, the storyboard teams, the art department, writers, production, all the way to the voice actors. I’m very proud that we even got in some dogs that passed during production that can now live on forever in this adventure across the galaxy. I hope I did right by everyone on this show.”

The talented creator says he couldn’t be more proud of the show he and his team have created. “The timing, the jokes, the colors, the action, the deep feels — I think it’s all stunning. And, even after watching every episode well over 70 times in one form or another, it still amazes me how beautifully the crew made this insane idea work. I am truly grateful for this team.”

For Cortez, the biggest lesson learned was to trust his team and allow them to contribute to the show. “I’m one person with a limit to what I can come up with, so why not let everyone that has an idea be able to pitch something and see if there’s a place for it in the show?” he asks. “So many amazing and funny ideas have made it into the show that I would never have thought of and artwork that I could never be able to produce on my own.”

Dogs in Space
Dogs in Space

He also has a few helpful suggestions for all future show creators: “I would say to do your research. Don’t wait for anyone to give you permission to do so. And definitely don’t allow others to tell you there’s only one way to do things or a certain path you have to take. You do the work, you put yourself out there and you keep on going, no matter how many setbacks come your way. When I was ready to pitch this show I went in with the mentality that if everyone passes on this idea, I will animate and post it myself and maybe someone will pick it up from there. If you believe you have something worth creating, create it!”

Dogs in Space premieres on Netflix on November 18. You can watch a full episode, “Fetch,” on the Netflix Futures YouTube channel here.

Nickelodeon Animation Greenlights ‘Max & the Midknights,’ ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’

The adventures of a young girl dreaming of knighthood and the hijinks of three unlikely best friends will soon unfold on Nickelodeon with the pickup of two all-new animated series. Nickelodeon has greenlit Max & the Midknights, based on the bestselling children’s book series written and drawn by acclaimed author and cartoonist Lincoln Peirce (Big Nate), and Rock, Paper, Scissors, the first short picked up for series from Nickelodeon’s Intergalactic Shorts Program.

Today’s announcement was made by Ramsey Naito, President of Animation, Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation. Both series will be produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank.

“These two series packed with relatable characters, hilarious escapades and rich, imaginative worlds are the perfect additions to our Nickelodeon content family,” said Naito. “Translating the mega-popular Max & the Midknights from a book to television series is a creative undertaking that we can’t wait to dive into, and the comedic adventures of friends Rock, Paper and Scissors is truly made for our Nickelodeon audience.”

Max & the Midknights (20 episodes) follows a determined 10-year-old girl named Max, who pursues her dream of becoming a knight by leading her friends on an epic adventure in the fantastical medieval kingdom of Byjovia. The greenlight marks Nickelodeon’s second series based off the beloved works from Peirce and follows Big Nate, which is set to debut next year.

As a small girl with big ideas in the Middle Ages, Max will defy the status quo, fight for justice, and inspire everyone she meets with her feisty and fearless leadership. Not only will Max and the Midknights battle sword-wielding zombies, duel a malevolent sorceress, and tame a fire-breathing dragon, they’ll also have loads of fun, forge lasting bonds of friendship, and push each other to be braver and bolder versions of themselves.  Clever, kind, and seriously sassy, Max is always ready to lend a hand — or a sword — whenever anyone needs help.

“I am absolutely delighted to join forces with my friends at Nickelodeon to bring Max & the Midknights to life,” said Peirce. “Nickelodeon’s passion for unforgettable stories and iconic characters is unparalleled, and there’s no partner I’d rather work with.  I couldn’t be happier.”

Peirce’s comedic-adventure book series has spent multiple weeks on the New York Times Best-Seller list, is published in 14 languages around the globe and available as ebooks and audiobooks. The books are published by Crown Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books.

The Max & the Midknights television series is executive produced by Emmy Award-winning producer Jane Startz (Ella Enchanted, The Magic School Bus, The Baby-Sitters Club) and Lincoln Peirce (Big Nate) and produced by Amy McKenna (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman: Bloodlines). Sharon Flynn (All Hail King Julien) and David Skelly (The Muppets, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc.) serve as co-executive producers and showrunners. Nathan Schram, Director, Development, Nickelodeon Animation, is overseeing development and production of the series for Nickelodeon.

Max & the Midknights underscores Nickelodeon’s strategy to be the home of the biggest franchises kids and families love, and it expands Nickelodeon’s growing portfolio of influential properties that already includes SpongeBob SquarePants, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, The Patrick Star Show, PAW Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Blue’s Clues & You!, the all-new animated Star Trek: Prodigy series, The Smurfs partnership and the Transformers co-production.

Rock, Paper, Scissors (20 episodes) brings the iconic childhood game to life! This character-driven comedy follows the hilarious shenanigans of roommates Rock, Paper, and Scissors on their hijinks and ridiculous adventures. Rock, the moral compass of the group, is always struggling at his dream of becoming a model; Paper is an inventor and the brains of the group (if by “brains” you mean “making stuff that’s always blowing up”); and Scissors is the wannabe cool guy whose ego brings an endless fountain of chaos to these three friends. No matter how much they compete and mess with each other, at the end of the day, they will always bond over their shared love of one thing: wacky nonsense.

The is created and executive produced by Kyle Stegina (Robot Chicken) and Josh Lehrman (Robot Chicken). Bob Boyle (The Fairly OddParents) and Conrad Vernon (Sausage Party) serve as executive producers. Development is overseen for Nickelodeon by Kari Kim, Vice President, Animation Development, Nickelodeon Animation, and Daniel Wineman, Vice President, Animation Development, Nickelodeon Animation.

Rock, Paper, Scissors was picked up from Nick’s Intergalactic Shorts Program. The initiative launched in June 2019 and is overseen by Naito, with Vernon serving as the program’s executive producer and Paul Watling (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as co-executive producer. Kim and Wineman oversee development and production of the program, which is designed to identify and develop original comedy-driven content for kids from creative voices and passionate storytellers.

Global Platform Encantos Teams with Eugenio Derbez’s 3Pas for New Kids’ Content

Encantos, the global creator platform bringing purpose-driven entertainment to kids, today announced global megastar Eugenio Derbez and his 3Pas Studios partner Ben Odell will join forces with Encantos’ Susie Jaramillo and Steven Wolfe Pereira (Canticos, Skeletina and the In-Between World, Tiny Travelers) to develop new children’s entertainment IP that aims to ignite critical thinking and creative problem solving skills in ways that kids will find entertaining, culturally-authentic and relatable.

Encantos is expanding its award-winning portfolio of Encantos Originals for kids and families with a new property that will incorporate Derbez’s unique blend of wit, wisdom and heart. The new IP features a confident, street-smart, brilliant boy who unwittingly gets into trouble and uses his humor, wit and ingenuity to get himself out of sticky situations. Featuring an ensemble cast of odd-ball multi-generational characters, Encantos and 3Pas will bring the property to life in engaging ways across digital and physical products including an animated series, consumer products, publishing and interactive experiences in the Encantos app.

Encantos

An award-winning actor, writer, director, producer and philanthropist, Derbez is one of the most influential creative forces in the entertainment world. Named by Variety as the #1 most influential Hispanic male in the world, the beloved Mexico-born star has amassed a global fan base through his TV shows and films including such hits as Acapulco, Coda, Instructions Not Included, Overboard and Under the Same Moon.

Derbez co-founded the film and TV production company 3Pas Studios with Odell, who has produced or executive produced over 30 feature films as well as scripted and unscripted TV shows in both English and Spanish. Together they have made some of the most successful Latinx movies and television shows since they founded their company seven years ago.

“Making a child laugh is the best feeling in the world,” said Derbez. “Now just imagine if they can also learn while they are being entertained! We want it to be universal but through a specific Latino lens. I have a seven-year-old daughter and I just never feel like there is enough content that speaks to her and reflects who she is. We want 3pas to be part of the solution and Encantos is the perfect partner to help us achieve this.”

“Eugenio has a special gift for connecting with children and it shines through his work,” said Encantos Chief Story Officer and President of Encantos Studios Susie Jaramillo. “He is a natural Storyteacher who understands the power of humor to help kids learn. We can’t wait to channel his bigheartedness and comedic genius into a property that entertains and engages kids while teaching them valuable new fundamental skills like critical thinking, problem solving and perseverance.”

Named to Fast Company’s Annual List of the World’s Most Innovative Companies for 2021, Encantos is on a mission to create entertainment that enlightens. Encantos’ first property Canticos is the #1 bilingual preschool brand and Emmy-nominated series that has inspired millions of children to fall in love with Nicky, Kiki and Ricky Chickie and their animated friends. With hundreds of millions of views across Nick Jr. and YouTube, Canticos has enchanted children at home and in the classroom as preschool teachers have incorporated their stories, music and books into their early learning curriculum.

In addition to developing Encantos Originals, Encantos also nurtures and empowers creators from around the world to help kids learn via its Storyteaching creator platform. Leveraging unique insights and analytics, Encantos is able to identify and develop IP with global potential and help purpose-driven storytellers build their brands and audience. Creators also benefit from Encantos’ vast global network, helping to grow their IP beyond digital experiences into publishing, licensing, merchandising and brand partnerships.

“While over 50% of kids in the United States are multicultural, children’s entertainment and education does not reflect today’s diverse world,” said Encantos CEO Steven Wolfe Pereira. “Families expect and deserve greater representation in what their kids are seeing and learning. Encantos is bringing culturally authentic voices together on a platform that provides the broader range of perspectives that has been missing.”

“One of our priorities at 3Pas is bringing more diverse-focused content to the kids and family space, and we love Steven and Susie’s vision for Encantos. We want to swing big and build out a lasting property that can teach kids using all of the multimedia platforms available to them. And as always, we want to do it with humor and heart and we love to work with and support talented Latinx partners to get there,” said Odell.

Critics Fall Under ‘Encanto’s Musical, Meaningful Spell

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 60th animated feature aims to enchant audiences this holiday season, and critics are largely predicting that this magic bolt of musical family entertainment won’t misfire. Arriving in theaters November 24, Encanto is set in Colombia and tells the story of a family gifted with unique magical powers — except for Mirabel, a young girl who soon finds the restoration of the Madrigal clan and their supernatural casita. The picture is directed by Zootopia duo Jared Bush and Byron Howard, co-directed by Charise Castro Smith and features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Conjuring an impressive 90% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, Encanto is earning praise for its colorful, energetic and emotive animation and message of acceptance — although an expansive cast of characters spilling over the story crowded a few reviewers out of complete enjoyment. Here is a quick sample of what the critics are saying:

“Much of the movie’s considerable charm comes from the fact that despite the magical elements inherent even in its title, the story is basically about the dynamics of any large, close-knit family of contrasting personalities … As much as the story hinges on Mirabel discovering what threatens the Madrigal magic and endangers their refuge, on a more fundamental level it’s about this big, complicated group reestablishing its harmony, learning to appreciate, even celebrate, one another’s qualities, whether they are extravagant or simple. And it’s about a community coming together to rebuild what’s lost and fortify one another in the process.”
— David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

“Yes, this is a Disney movie, but with a script that strives until the very end to say that you are defined by how you see yourself, it would have been been far more satisfying to end with something that implies you can’t fix years of trauma like magic, bu everyone can at least start with today. For those who look beyond the ready-made dramas of the film, Encanto is an emotionally wrought movie about the ways family can hurt us and how ‘normal’ can be a four-letter word. That’s a lesson and a tone that doesn’t always come together, but at least provides a magical, impressive spark all its own.”
Kristen Lopez, IndieWire

“…Encanto has been visualized with a vivacious naturalistic glow (swirling flower petals, eye-candy pastels) that, at moments, is nearly psychedelic. The songs, by Lin-Manuel Miranda, are syncopatedly infectious, word-weavingly clever, and unabashedly romantic; they keep the film bopping. And the whole picture is intricate and accomplished enough to make the era when your average Disney house animated feature was several tiers below that of Pixar seem like ancient history. Yet for all the dazzle on display, none of it would mean much if Encanto didn’t present its heroine’s moving journey in a way that kept surprising you. That’s the key to enthralling animation — it stays one jubilant beat ahead of the audience.”
Owen Gleiberman, Variety

“[Lin-Manuel] Miranda’s accordion-powered music is a part of the movie’s overall spotlight on Colombian culture, and the various different Madrigals pop amid this vibrant landscape, courtesy of some outstanding animation. [Stephanie] Beatriz’s Mirabel is a poster child for awkwardness – however, that plus a wonderful sense of humor and big heart make her a quite enjoyable character to watch on a journey of identity and acceptance. And voiced endearingly well by [John]  Leguizamo, Bruno arrives later in the proceedings but still manages to hijack Encanto as the family’s scene-stealing, oddball black sheep.

The plot, however, lets them down after a buoyant start gives way to a third act that seems to miss the film’s central point. Also, the family is so huge that some interesting supporting characters get lost as the story shifts to Mirabel’s main quest, and the movie just doesn’t have enough run time to flesh out the fascinating relationship between the Madrigals and the neighbors who hang on their every deed.”
Brian Truitt, USA Today

“…Maybe this family of fanatical overachievers need to see how their supernatural superiority is a neurotic group symptom of unhappiness. Maybe they need humble Mirabel to bring them to a new enlightenment. So are their gifts a good thing or a bad thing? They didn’t seem like such a bad thing in the film’s opening two acts: these gifts seemed to be part of everyone’s innocent well-being, abilities lightly and modestly worn. And as the rescuing of these powers is the plot motivation, it is an uncomfortable turnaround for these powers to be represented as something to be opposed or surmounted — a paradox which the film does not acknowledge or resolve — especially as we get a pretty broad hint that they may in any case be magically restored. This is a flavorless, unsatisfying film.”

Simian Sniper Lessons: Will Speck & Josh Gordon Unleash ‘Marvel’s Hit-Monkey’ on Hulu

***This article originally appeared in the December ’21 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 315)***

Will Speck and Josh Gordon went ape for Hit-Monkey when they first came upon Daniel Way and Dalibor Talajic’s original comic-book series about 10 years ago. “We were struck by its original story and how rich and deep the material was,” says Gordon, who’s best known for directing live-action comedies such as Office Christmas Party and Blades of Glory and the impactful Gecko and Cavemen commercials for Geico with Speck. “We loved these strange Marvel one-shots and thought it would be a great premise for a limited run series. This was before Guardians of the Galaxy came out and we were wondering if Marvel was ever going to make a movie around a character who grunts, doesn’t speak and you simply have to interpret how he’s feeling.”

“When we first started to pitch the comic book, they’d tell us that we’re the fifth directors who have fallen in love with the property,” says Gordon. “Then, three years ago, we pitched it to Jeph Loeb at Marvel and they flipped for it. Adapting it as an adult animated show gave us the ultimate freedom to produce the show that we wanted to see.”

Marvel's Hit-Monkey
Marvel’s Hit-Monkey

The new animated Hulu series centers on a Japanese snow monkey (voiced by Fred Tatasciore), who is trained by Bryce, an American assassin’s ghost (Jason Sudeikis), after his tribe is murdered in the Alps. Hit-Monkey also features George Takei and Olivia Munn as kindly politician Shinji Yokohama and his ambitious niece. Ally Maki and Nobi Nakanishi round up the cast as a pair of well-intentioned cops.

Speck and Gordon, who have been good friends since they met as students at NYU, are quite pleased that the show’s animation is handled by Atlanta-based Floyd County Productions, the studio best known for their work on Archer. Speck notes, “We loved the sarcasm and humor with which they animate that show, because we also wanted something different and adult oriented. They partnered with Toonz (India), Snipple (Philippines) and Mighty (Mexico) to produce the animation, and we love what they were able to achieve.”

Josh Gordon and Will Speck
Josh Gordon and Will Speck

The showrunners were aiming for a rich, cinematic overall mood for the show. “Much of the show has comedic elements led by Jason Sudeikis’ character, but it also delves into darker, more melancholy tones,” explains Gordon. “Episode eight, especially, delves into the effects of violence in the lives of a broken-down American assassin. It’s ultimately a revenge saga, but it also underlines the uselessness of revenge, because it never brings back the people you have lost. It turns you into the very monster that you are chasing. I’m proud to say that the animation goes there.”

Both Speck and Gordon love the show’s complex monkey character. “He is not just this crazy violent character, but he has this vulnerable soul,” says Speck. “We think the best characters are those that you care about and have vulnerability in spades. You are always rooting for him and you want him to get his revenge, while you’re horrified by the world of humans. We also love Jason’s Bryce character and his sarcasm. He is by far the worst possible tour guide and mentor our monkey can have. He has wasted his own life, but now he has to teach Monkey how to navigate the world. It was a lot of fun watching Jason Sudeikis recording the voice, because he said the character was on the complete opposite side of the spectrum from his Ted Lasso persona.”

Marvel's Hit-Monkey
Marvel’s Hit-Monkey

The co-creators mention that they love the more complex adult worlds that modern animation can bring to screens both large and small. “We grew up on Adult Swim and we’re obsessed with Ricky and Morty; we love Akira — films and TV shows that really delve into very complex, morally complicated stories. By telling them in animation, you are building up the world and not ‘kiddifying’ them. We love that animation can go to these dark and interesting places. Bryce is not a good human being, but he slowly realizes that his entire life he has been a pretty terrible person. This is his one last chance to redeem himself.”

Gordon adds, “The show really feels like a movie, spread out in 10 episodes. I hope the audience will be entertained. Ultimately, we wanted to make a fun, adult, moody escapist show. It deals with the curse of violence, but you also get comedy and entertaining storylines. It goes back to a great line in the show which says, ‘If you pick up a gun in anger, you’re cursed never to put it down again.’”

Marvel’s Hit-Monkey premieres with 10 episodes on Hulu on Wednesday, November 17.
