Beatles Animator Ron Campbell Dies Age 81

Australian-born animator and pop artist Ron Campbell, director for The Beatles Saturday morning cartoon and animator on The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, died January 22. The 81-year old passed away in Phoenix, Arizona, where he lived with his wife Engelina. The news was shared to the artist’s Facebook page by his longtime business partner, Scott Segelbaum.

“Making cartoon films was something Ron had dreamed of since he was 6 years old when he learned that the short films of Tom & Jerry that he saw in the theaters were only drawings. He was amazed that he could make drawings that could come to life … and that was it. He said he never woke up a day in his life and thought … damn I have to go to work,” Segelbaum wrote.

Born December 26, 1939 in the small town of Seymore, Victoria, Campbell received a fine arts education at the Swinburne Art Institute in Melbourne and began his animation career in the late 1950s. The talented cartoonist was soon working on Saturday morning favorites like Beetle Bailey and Krazy Kat, and made his mark with The Beatles animated series (1965-69), produced at Artransa Park Studios in Sydney.

Campbell moved to the U.S. to work for Hanna-Barbera; he also wrote and animated for George of the Jungle (Jay Ward Prod.) and Sesame Street. Building on his success with The Beatles cartoon, Campbell animated several sequences for the band’s cult animated feature Yellow Submarine in the late ’60s, working with friend and colleague Duane Crowther. These included the “Sea of Time” sequence and many scenes featuring Nowhere Man and between Chief Blue Meanie and Max.

Campbell’s 50-plus-year animation career carried through to the 1990s, a he storyboarded, animated, produced and directed for beloved toons including The Smurfs, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, Rugrats, Rocket Power and Duckman. After retiring in 2008, he refocused his creative energies on creating paintings inspired by the iconic animations he helped bring to life, touring galleries across the U.S. and meeting with fans who grew up inspired by his work.

‘Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten’ Gets Sneak-Peek Weekend with Arnold

Genius Brands International announces a sneak peek event for season one of the new animated children’s series Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, Co-Executive Produced by and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which will officially premiere on Kartoon Channel! in spring 2021.

Sponsored by toy company Laser Pegs, the weekend event will be preceded by an introduction from Schwarzenegger himself, and will air beginning Friday, January 29 at 12 p.m. EST through Sunday, January 31 at 11:59 p.m. PST, exclusively on Kartoon Channel! In addition to content “Brought to you by Laser Pegs,” the toy company will provide prize packs of their unique STEM construction toys for social media promotions across Kartoon Channel! platforms.

“I am excited to work with Genius Brands to share a first look at Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, my first ever animated children’s series coming this spring to the Kartoon Channel!,” said Schwarzenegger. “I am especially proud and honored to bring Stan Lee’s vision and one of his last creations to life in this masterful production, sharing positive nuggets of value such as health and fitness tips, inclusivity, diversity, anti-bullying and more.”

Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten, an action-adventure comedy series, is one of the last creations from the genius mind of the late Stan Lee. The school day at Superhero Kindergarten is a lot like that at any other kindergarten … except these six extraordinary students have a secret: They are superheroes! Rather than powers derived from a radioactive spider bite or gamma rays, these special kids’ powers come from common kindergarten items like white glue, putty, building blocks and yes, even farts (yuck!). And thankfully, they have Arnold Armstrong (a.k.a. Captain Fantastic, the greatest superhero to ever live!) as their teacher (voiced by Schwarzenegger).

The series is voice directed by John Landis, one of the most successful movie directors of all time, with Steven Banks, former head writer for SpongeBob SquarePants, serving as head writer for the series. Produced by Genius Brands and Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment in association with Schwarzenegger’s Oak Productions, the series features 26 half-hours for global distribution with Genius Brands concurrently launching a comprehensive retail program. Gill Champion, CEO of Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment; Andy Heyward, Chairman & CEO of Genius Brands; Schwarzenegger; and Paul Wachter of Main Street Advisors serve as executive producers.

“This unveiling is a special event for Genius Brands, as it represents the culmination of countless hours of hard work by some of the most proven hit makers in the entertainment industry. Stan Lee, Arnold Schwarzenegger and John Landis, together, have been responsible for billions of dollars of box office revenue from hit movies, series and consumer products, and we have no doubt that more magic will be made with Stan Lee’s Superhero Kindergarten,” commented Andy Heyward, Chairman & CEO of Genius Brands. “We are especially excited to help realize this vision of Stan Lee and look forward to bringing a broad array of truly unique consumer products to retail.”

Mondo TV Forecasts Second Season of ‘MeteoHeroes’

Mondo TV, one of the largest European producers and distributors of animated content, has announced plans for the second season of its enormously popular environmentally themed animated kids’ show MeteoHeroes. The first season has sold into more than 120 countries and was among the top shows airing on Cartoonito in Italy last autumn.

Mondo TV is reteaming with Meteo Operations Italia (MOPI), which originated the concept, to produce the 52 x 11′ season 2. Production will start in the first quarter of 2021, and is expected to be completed by 2022.

MeteoHeroes is billed as the only cartoon in the world dedicated entirely to climate and environmental issues. Each episode focuses on issues related to ecology and respect for nature through the adventures of six superpowered kids who can control weather phenomena. Working alongside scientists and meteorologists at their futuristic HQ based in Gran Sasso Mountain National Park in Italy, the MeteoHeroes are trained to control their powers and fulfill their mission: to save the Earth.

The announcement follows a continuing growth in linear and streaming broadcast sales of season one in numerous countries and the appointment of agents in a number of territories, as well as a very successful first run on Cartoonito Italia and the well-received launch of a MeteoHeroes podcast, which teaches kids sustainable behaviors.

“We’re enormously proud of MeteoHeroes; it’s the only cartoon in the world that combines fun, adventure and science – a show that gets kids thinking as well as giving them laughs and thrills,” said Matteo Corradi, Mondo TV President & CEO. “It’s not easy to balance entertainment and education, but this show does so perfectly – and the confirmed arrival in 2022 of the second series is a tribute to everyone involved in making MeteoHeroes such a big success.”

MeteoHeroes has won its success with its stylish animation design, delivering action, comedy and real scientific information in thrilling storylines that discuss complex contemporary issues like climate change and weather patterns in an accessible and appealing way. Each episode is based on a real event with each story on screen linked to images and footage of the news stories that inspired it and the science behind each mission, which opens doors to discussion about important issues between co-viewing parents and children.

“We believe it’s important to give the very young a grounding in notions like respect for the environment, nature and the fight against climate change – but to do so in an accessible and entertaining way. MeteoHeroes does just that: it’s fun and exciting but it also helps kids to understand why and how we need to make our planet a better place to live,” said Luigi Latini, CEO of MOPI.

The producers also collaborated with well-known Italian child psychoanalyst and author Luigi Bellerini to create young characters with well-defined personalities, adapting to their super powers, dealing with their responsibilities and interacting with their teammates. The show was developed with diversity in mind: gender equality is a focus, and the six main characters hail from six different continents.

Russian Court Bans ‘Death Note,’ ‘Tokyo Ghoul’ & ‘Inuyashiki’ for Violence

State prosecutors successfully petitioned the court in St. Petersburg, Russia to stop distribution of several popular anime in the country, claiming that teenagers will reenact violent scenes depicted in the series. The court announced Wednesday it had decided to ban titles including Death Note (produced by Madhouse), Tokyo Ghoul (Pierrot) and Inuyashiki (MAPPA).

“Every episode contains cruelty, murder, violence,” the court said in a December 18 announcement that it had registered five law suits against 49 websites offering the series. Kolpinsky district court ordered Death Note and Inuyashiki be banned from distribution on two websites, and Tokyo Ghoul be banned on one site. The bans only affect the listed web addresses, according to state news agency RIA Novosti, but censorship agency Roskomnadzor may interpret the order more broadly.

Prosecutors had also asked for bans on Naruto, Elfen Lied and Interspecies Reviewers last month. The court continued to hear arguments Wednesday over these titles, as well as popular Russian rapper Morgenstern’s meme-based song “I Ate Grandpa.”

Death Note specifically has been a focus of controversy for several years. Parents in the country began campaigning to ban the global hit property created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata in 2013 when several volumes of the manga were found in the bedroom of a 15-year-old girl who died by suicide. The title made headlines again in January when a teenage boy who was known as a fan reportedly fell out of a window wearing a white shirt and red tie, similar to main character Light Yagami.
