‘Simpsons’ Voice Star Nancy Cartwright Joins MasterClass

Illuminating streaming platform MasterClass, which makes it possible for members to learn from the world’s best, is adding Emmy Award-winning voice actor Nancy Cartwright to its stable of over 100 expert instructors covering a broad range of topics.

“Nancy has mastered the art of taking words off a page and using only her voice to bring hundreds of original animated characters to life on screen,” said David Rogier, Founder & CEO of MasterClass. “It’s only fitting that our first animated class features Nancy teaching members how to harness their voices to give life to unique characters and tap into their imagination.”

The talented performer who has brought to life beloved characters like Chuckie Finster (Rugrats), Rufus (Kim Possible) and Bart Simpson (The Simpsons), will be teaching voice acting in MasterClass’s first-ever video course to include animation.

Designed for beginning and intermediate voice actors and nonactors alike, Cartwright’s MasterClass will unpack her holistic creative process for recording animated characters step-by-step, including voicing brand-new characters with original sketches to showcase her range of techniques. Cartwright will open up about every part of her experience, from performance tips to insights on how to succeed in voice acting. She will break down the important role of a mentor, the differences between an agent and a manager and how to find representation and handle auditions, while using rejection to one’s benefit.

Members will walk away from her class not only with skills for voice acting, but also with inspiring life lessons that can be applied to any career. The MasterClass promises to not only be a useful tool for aspiring voice actors, but also an entertaining journey through Cartwright’s career and many memorable characters.

“If you’re going to start a career in voice acting, there are a few things you need to know. Number one, the most important thing is that you have to be yourself. You have your own voice — literally,” Cartwright said. “In my MasterClass, I’ll share advice on how to hone that voice and use it to not only build a career, but to uplift, to make change and to bring joy to others.”

An Ohio native, Cartwright has made her mark in the entertainment industry as one of the most beloved and recognized voices on television for nearly 40 years. She is best known as the voice behind Bart from The Simpsons, but has also voiced Chuckie in Rugrats, Mindy in Animaniacs / Pinky and The Brain, Rufus in Kim Possible and dozens of others. Cartwright won the first-ever Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in 1992, the Annie Award for voicing Bart Simpson in 1995 and a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for voicing Rufus, the naked mole rat in the Disney Channel series Kim Possible in 2004.

In addition to her voice work, Cartwright co-founded the production company, Spotted Cow Entertainment, as well as the television development and production company CRE84U Entertainment, a recently launched global joint-venture focused on the acquisition and development of Latinx intellectual properties.

2021 Sundance Fest Slates 10 Shorts in Animation Program

The nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the showcase of new independent work selected across the Feature Film, Short Film, Indie Series and New Frontier categories for the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The Festival will take place digitally via a feature-rich, Sundance-built online platform and in person on Satellite Screens across the country (public health permitting) from January 28-February 3, 2021. Additionally, Festival attendees can gather in virtual waiting rooms, participate in live Q&As, and congregate in new, inspired online environments to interact in a range of ways both new and familiar.

The Institute shared details of how the Festival will meet audiences on the online platform and Satellite Screens earlier this month.

“This Festival is a singular response to a singular year — both in design and curation — and we are excited about the new dimensions of possibility it will reveal. But at its core is something that speaks to our most enduring values,” said Tabitha Jackson, Director of the Sundance Film Festival. “For thousands of years humans have gathered to tell stories and make meaning. In this pandemic year, we gather to celebrate a constellation of artists with unique perspectives that express this current moment and who together are saying, ‘We exist. This is who we are. And this is what we see.’”

The Fire Next Time

Fifty short films from 27 countries have been chosen out of 9.933 submissions, including 10 films in the Animation track. “In a year unlike any other, short films are still going strong with art and craft unique to the form. We are thrilled to share a lineup with a wild range of characters, styles, ideas and emotions to our audience, wherever you may be,” said Mike Plante, Senior Programmer, Short Film.

Festival-goers can also discover the next wave of animated storytelling in the New Frontier section for emerging media works, including Fortune!, a series of documentary shorts exploring society’s relationship with money; the just-announced Namoo, from Baobab Studios and Erick Oh; and “virtual erotic poem” Nightsss from Polish artists Weronika Lewandowska and Sandra Frydrysiak.

NoneMore Sets Up to Develop Charlie Mackesy Projects; Partners with Bad Robot

Charlie Mackesy’s illustrated book The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse captured the hearts of readers young and old with its message of kindness, hope and courage. Now, Mackesy has teamed up with producer Cara Speller to form a production company, NoneMore Productions, to extend the world of Mackesy’s book into new media. NoneMore will work with the author and additional partners to develop his stories for film, television and other formats.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is a commercial and critical hit, spending 53 weeks in the Sunday Times Top 10 Bestseller list and 47 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list, with 21 of those at Number 1. The book, which was also the first to be awarded both Waterstones Book of the Year and Barnes & Noble Book of the Year, tells the tale of a young boy who encounters a mole, a fox and a horse on a walk in the countryside, sharing with each of them profound conversations about love, life and companionship.

NoneMore’s first project will be an animated short film adaptation of Mackesy’s book being co-produced with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. Abrams and Bad Robot’s President of Motion Pictures Hannah Minghella will serve as producers on the project alongside Speller and NoneMore’s Matthew Freud.

“I’m continually surprised by everything, and I’m excited by this film. It’s a new adventure for me, and it’s another way for people to experience the journey of the four unlikely friends,” said Mackesy.

“Charlie has created an instant classic. From the beauty of his illustrations to the deeply moving and profound questions these characters contemplate, The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is a balm for the soul,” said Minghella. “As we continue our own journey into animation at Bad Robot, JJ and I are thrilled to be partnering with Charlie, Cara and Matthew to bring these beloved characters to life.”

The 30-minute short will feature hand-drawn animation capturing the look and spirit of the book and will see a team of artists work alongside Mackesy to bring the project to the big screen.

“From the first moment of seeing Charlie’s soulful characters, I wanted to know more about them and how they interact with each other beyond the moments in the book. The opportunity to bring them even further to life with the magic that animation promises, and to introduce them to an even wider audience, is an incredibly exciting prospect that we can’t wait to explore,” said Speller.

The animated film reunites Speller and Minghella, who have a decade-long relationship, having first met when Speller was working with Gorillaz and Minghella was head of Sony Pictures Animation. Speller and Minghella most recently teamed to develop a family movie The Toymaker’s Secret at TriStar Pictures, written by Alex Garland and to be directed by Paloma Baeza.

Speller is an Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning producer best known for the Academy Award-nominated film Pear Cider and Cigarettes, and the Emmy-nominated short series Marvel’s Rocket & Groot, alongside her work with virtual band Gorillaz on their ground-breaking music videos and live shows. Speller recently produced Robert Valley’s short film Zima Blue as part of the critically acclaimed Tim Miller and David Fincher’s Netflix anthology Love, Death + Robots, as well as executive producing 101 Dalmatian Street for Disney+.

NoneMore Productions, headed by Cara Speller and development executive Delphi Lythgoe, will be headquartered in the U.K.

Bad Robot’s initial foray into feature animation will be the production of Dr. Seuss’s iconic children’s book, Oh, The Places You’ll Go! set up at Warner Bros. Additionally, the company has a wide slate of projects in development under its Warner Media deal, including priority projects with Warner Bros., DC Entertainment, HBO Max, and Warner Animation Group. Bad Robot also has the thriller Lou starring Allison Janney set up at Netflix, as well as multiple projects at Paramount, including a live-action remake of the beloved anime film Your Name.

‘Soul’ Music: Pixar Unveils Extended Sneak Peek Ahead of Dec. 25 Debut

As Disney and Pixar’s Soul nears its debut on Disney+ on December 25, a new sneak peek of the critically acclaimed feature film is now available. In the movie, Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) is a middle-school band teacher who dreams of playing in the best jazz club in town. Filmmakers found they could relate to the character’s passion for music.

Director Pete Docter grew up in a musical family and plays the double bass. “My folks are both teachers and both musicians,” he shares. “There are three kids and we all became musicians. I think my mom enjoyed having the Von Trapp family; when people would come over, we’d have to perform. My two sisters stuck with it — one is a cellist with the Metropolitan Opera, and the other one is violist and a teacher.”

Co-director Kemp Powers, who used to be a music writer, played the alto saxophone in a jazz band during high school. His affinity for jazz plays a big role in his personal life. “My son’s name is Mingus,” says Powers. “He’s named after Charles Mingus. A lot of us Gen Xers, particularly Black Gen Xers, fell in love with the bebop-era jazz artists — John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, of course Herbie Hancock. These guys were musical icons that — specifically in New York City — inform so much of the other big musical genre in the city, which is hip hop. The background tunes of my life are jazz and hip hop.”

“Life has so much to offer,” says Joe in the sneak peek. “We only have a short time on this planet. Don’t miss out on the joys of life. Remember to enjoy every minute of it.”

Disney and Pixar’s Soul” also features the voices of Tina Fey, Phylicia Rashad, Donnell Rawlings, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Angela Bassett and Daveed Diggs. The film is directed by Docter, co-directed by Powers and produced by Dana Murray. Jazz compositions & arrangements are by globally renowned musician and Grammy nominee Jon Batiste, while Oscar winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network) composed an original score.

Adobe, Pixar Team for ‘Art and Soul’ Album Design Fan Contest

Adobe, the worldwide leader in creative tools, is harmonizing with Oscar-winning Pixar Animation Studios to present a new artists’ challenge tied to the eagerly awaited animated feature Soul (available on Disney+ on December 25). For the Art and Soul contest, fans around the world are invited to share their creative spark by designing an album cover celebrating their true selves — inspired by the awakening journey of music teacher Joe in the movie.

An album cover is an outward artistic expression of what’s inside, both literally and figuratively, making it a perfect format to play with themes from the film: Soul is all finding out what makes you, YOU – whether that’s a feeling, a passion, a calling or a place.

“We’re excited to collaborate with Adobe around the release of Soul to inspire and engage their broad creative community around this milestone release,” said Jonathan Garson, SVP Marketing, Pixar. “Our work together is the manifestation of our shared goal to inspire creativity and champion artists all over the world, and we look forward to creating greater opportunities together so that everyone can tell their amazing stories.”

One Grand Prize winner will receive an exclusive mentorship session with Soul director Kemp Powers, $10,000 USD cash prize, a signed Soul poster, special vinyl release of the film soundtrack, one-year Creative Cloud membership.

To enter, fans can take advantage of a 30-day free trial of Creative Cloud and artwork from the new Disney-Pixar flick to create an album cover design that shines a spotlight on who they are, using CC apps like Illustrator and Photoshop. Entries can be shared via public accounts on Instagram (with @adobecreativecloud, #AdobeArtandSoul and #Contest) or Twitter (with @creativecloud, $AdobeArtandSoul and #Contest).

The contest is now live and will close January 10, 2021. Find the complete rules, runner-up prize info, resources and inspiration at adobeartandsoul.com.

Record-Setting Heritage Auction Shows Animation Art Is Serious Business

Charles Schulz, Winsor McCay, Mary Blair and Ub Iwerks quite famously drew comic-strip and cartoon characters, amusements aimed at children of all ages. But in 2020 their achievements are as revered and treasured as fine art, as evidenced by the fact their original works brought chartbusting sums in Heritage Auctions’ record-setting Animation Art event held Dec. 11-13.

The auction realized more than $4.27 million – significantly more than any previous auction of animation art. The sale included renderings and storyboards, production cels and master backgrounds from myriad beloved titles shown on screens big and small. More than 4,700 bidders worldwide took part in the landmark sale that saw an almost unheard-of sell-through rate of more than 99% and resulted in the highest price ever paid for an original Peanuts work created by Schulz.

“Not so long ago, animation art sales were routinely in the million-dollar range,” says Heritage Auctions’ Director of Animation Art Jim Lentz. “In June we set a new record at $3.7 million, only to break that a mere six months later. This is a serious number for any art auction, but for animation art, it’s absolutely historic.”

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea painting by Peter Ellenshaw
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea painting by Peter Ellenshaw

The auction featured the largest-ever sale of artwork made for the Fleischer Brothers’ groundbreaking Superman cartoons of the early 1940s, a day full of Disney and the first epic sale of Warner Bros. Animation archives since the company stores closed almost 20 years ago. There was something for everyone, from rough drafts of history sketched and painted by storyboard artists Peter and Harrison Ellenshaw, whose auction debut was topped by a 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea painting that realized $26,400, to cels from the Super Friends to Heavy Metal moments.

The Animation Art auction got off to a momentous start on the first day, when the drawings Schultz made for “The Peanuts Album” sold for $288,000. That bested a previous high-water mark for original Schulz art set only last month, when a Nov. 17, 1950 Peanuts daily strip realized $192,000 during Heritage’s Comics & Comic Art event. These charming portraits of eight beloved characters, among them Charlie Brown and Snoopy and Lucy, were made for a newspaper giveaway in 1953; until this sale, these early iterations of the classic characters had never been seen in public or available at auction.

Good Ol’ Charlie Brown and Snoopy starred in another of the auction’s most loved lots: a 12-cel sequence of the frolicking twosome taken from CBS’s 1980s Saturday-morning The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show. Estimated at $5,000, the playful piece, as fun and familiar as any Peanuts image, sold for $30,000.

Another extraordinary rarity set a record during the sale’s second session, when Iwerks’ drawings of Minnie and Mickey Mouse realized $43,200 – the highest price ever paid at auction for original Disney drawings. The amount should not surprise, as these pieces were made for 1928’s landmark Steamboat Willie, which marked the official debuts of both beloved characters and was among the first fully synchronized sound cartoons. And, like the Schulz piece, these drawings had never before been to auction.

A drawing from another pioneering cartoon, 1914’s Gertie the Dinosaur, realized $33,600 – the most anyone has ever paid to own a piece of the cartoon named one of the greatest-ever in a 1994 survey of animators. Winsor McCay has long been an esteemed figure among animation historians; now, it would seem, the rest of the world is catching up to the significance of the man also responsible for the revered comic strip Little Nemo.

This Animation Art event was populated throughout by illustrators, animators and fine artists and authors who elevated cartoons to new artistic heights, from Disney’s legendary story artists to director Tim Burton to The Simpsons’ creator Matt Groening.

Lady and the Tramp "Bella Notte" production cel
Lady and the Tramp “Bella Notte” production cel

A production cel for one of the most famous and certainly beloved sequences in Disney history – the “Bella Notte” scene from 1955’s Lady and the Tramp – was among the event’s biggest hits, realizing $37,200. This cel, from The Joe Rinaldi Collection, is a moment familiar to anyone who’s ever watched a cartoon; it’s one of the most imitated and adored moments ever committed to celluloid, as Tony and his cook serenade the dogs while they share their spaghetti dinner behind the Italian restaurant.

Mary Blair, one of Disney’s “queens of animation” and Walt’s favorite artist, was represented in this auction by some four dozen pieces ranging from her earliest work on Dumbo to her late-career renaissance as Disney’s handpicked design for his “It’s a Small World” attraction. It should not surprise that of the top 20 lots in the auction, 12 were touched by Blair.

Her most popular piece in the Animation Art event featured no iconic characters, however. It was, instead, a conceptual rendering of the mermaids made for Peter Pan, which realized $48,000. Not far behind was her 1940s painting of dancing flowers for a film never made, Fiesta of the Flowers, which sold for $40,800.

Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas "Christmas Feast" production cel signed by Chuck Jones
Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas “Christmas Feast” production cel signed by Chuck Jones

This being the Christmas season, of course, no animation event would have been complete without offerings from CBS’s 1966 adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, which seems to be on the remake treadmill of late. A production cel setup and key master background from the Christmas feast sequence – signed by its director, the legendary Chuck Jones – made one winner’s heart grow three sizes the day it sold for $20,400.

Says Lentz of the final results, “It is so satisfying in these difficult times to see Animation Art – the artwork of smiles – grow to record heights in 2020. It was just the right time.”

PBS KIDS Launches New Interactive Series ‘Team Hamster!,’ S2 of ‘Scribbles and Ink’

PBS KIDS is growing its slate of digital offerings for inquisitive youngsters with the announcement of a new, interactive series: Team Hamster! Hailing from GBH Kids (formerly WGBH), the production is led by creator Melissa Carlson, Senior Producer, Digital Series for the studio; and Marcy Gunther, Senior Producer, Video.

Team Hamster! helps kids think creatively and use engineering skills to solve problems with everyday tools. This interactive digital series allows viewers to build, test, and redesign to save the day with hamsters Sadie, Mateo and Tasha – classroom pets by day, secret engineers by night. Users step into the hamsters’ world through animated stories integrated with games. The stories set up problems that kids help solve by playing games using simple machines, tools, and creative thinking. The pint-sized hamsters show kids that “big or small, they can solve it all!”

Team Hamster!
Team Hamster!

This digital series explores a “game-first” production model, with characters inspired by a game in The Ruff Ruffman Show, story ideas originating from game concepts, and a design and animation pipeline tailored for gaming. Team Hamster! integrates video and gameplay, with video acting as a narrative driver for the games, setting up compelling, character-driven problems that kids can solve.

The storyworld includes three interactive games (via the PBS KIDS Games app) and five videos (PBS KIDS Video app) designed to teach players engineering and design skills in a way that is relatable to kids. Solutions to the problems presented throughout the digital series involve everyday materials, tools and simple machines kids can see in the world around them. Printable activities support the development of kids’ art skills while helping players connect with the digital series’ characters for continued “off screen” learning. Families will also be able to access printable activities through pbskids.org.

Games:

  • Power Painters: Players help the hamsters fix paintings that Janitor Ruff accidentally messed up. This STEAM-focused game teaches players about simple machines, using gears, ramps, springs, and pulleys to create different shapes. Players can help complete the existing artwork or create their own art in Free Play mode.
  • Roll to the Rescue: Players help the hamsters roll their way through a dozen mazes to find their favorite things before Janitor Ruff throws them away. Players use simple machines to help them reach high up places and get to the end of each maze. They can navigate through the hamsters’ mazes or create their own.
  • Splash Dash: Janitor Ruff left a bunch of leaky pipes all over the school, and players help the hamsters redirect the water, so the school doesn’t flood. Players use tools such as a funnel, stapler, and even a clock, to move the water in the library, cafeteria and hallway in creative ways.

Standalone videos:

  • Bubble Trouble: When Janitor Ruff turns on the dishwasher in the teacher’s lounge, he accidentally uses too much soap and the hamsters have to find a way to clean up the giant mess.
  • Solve it All: Tasha, Sadie, and Mateo sing about the design process while testing out different ways to retrieve a special art project Janitor Ruff accidentally knocked out of place.

PBS KIDS also announced a second season of GBH Kids’ Scribbles and Ink, the character-driven, original digital interactive series that allows kids to discover the utter joy of using art tools to propel their way through an adventure, based on the popular books and characters created by author-illustrator Ethan Long. The friendly duo’s artistic adventures have garnered 8.4 million plays since launch and made it into the top three most-played PBS KIDS games of the year.

In Season 2, kids draw, paint and collage their way through new fantastical animated adventures – in the clouds, into museum paintings, on a desert island, into the fun-house world of Snoogleandia – where art is made in unexpected ways, using new mediums including sand, bubbles, polka dots, scratchboards and more. New episodes not only provide new digital art tools that allow users to expand their artistic and creative horizons, but also new ways to interact and collaborate with Scribbles and Ink in the studio, including allowing users to draw during the story, even while the animation is playing.

Key Features:

  • Draw – The home screen is a “blank page” where players begin the Scribbles and Ink experience. In this space, players meet Scribbles and Ink, and then choose what to do next: (1) Draw and interact with Scribbles and Ink. (2) See the art that they have saved in the gallery. (3) Launch into one of the stories that blend interactive art-making and animated storytelling.
  • Video – Standalone videos feature Scribbles and Ink (1) finding out how many ways they can spin a giant ball of yarn into art,(2) figuring out how to patch things up after a disagreement (which rips their studio in half!) ,(3) going on a madcap dash through the magical realm of Snoogelandia.
  • Printable activities to promote offline art-marking with specific drawing prompts from Scribbles and Ink; now available in Spanish (pbskids.org).

Available through the PBS KIDS Games app, Scribbles and Ink is produced by Emmy and Peabody Award winner Marisa Wolsky, Executive Producer for Children’s Media at GBH, and Emmy winner Dave Peth.

‘The Magician’s Elephant’ Enters the Netflix Feature Animation Ring

Netflix announced today a new animated feature film currently in production, The Magician’s Elephant, based on two-time Newbery Award winner Kate DiCamillo’s novel of the same title. The CG animation is being provided by Australian studio Animal Logic (Happy Feet, The LEGO Movie).

When Peter (voiced by Ford v Ferrari‘s Noah Jupe), who is searching for his long-lost sister named Adel (Pixie Davies), crosses paths with a fortune teller in the market square, there is only one question on his mind: is his sister still alive? The answer, that he must find a mysterious elephant and the magician (Benedict Wong) who will conjure it, sets Peter off on a harrowing journey to complete three seemingly impossible tasks that will change the face of his town forever.

In addition to Jupe, Davies and Wong, the voice cast includes Sian Clifford, Natasia Demetriou, Dawn French, Brian Tyree Henry, Aasif Mandvi, Mandy Patinkin, Miranda Richardson, Cree Summer and Lorraine Toussaint.

The film marks the directorial debut of renowned visual effects veteran Wendy Rogers (Shrek, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Puss in Boots, Flushed Away) and is produced by Julia Pistor (Jimmy Neutron, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events).

“Peter’s story planted itself in my heart when I first read the book — I felt very connected to him, and was totally captivated by the world and the characters,” said Rogers. “The power of hope, the belief that anything is possible, and the ability to ask ‘what if?’ are all themes that are woven into the fabric of this film, and resonate now more than ever.”

Pistor commented, “When I first read Kate DiCamillo’s book, I knew that I had to make The Magician’s Elephant into a film. It’s as inspiring as it is entertaining, and has such a wonderful blend of adventure, heart, magic and off-center humor. The film has such a unique visual style that transports the audience away to another world, one that Wendy and I wanted to ensure reflects the world as it really is =- full of different cultures and beliefs.”

The adaptation is written by Martin Hynes (Toy Story 4), and the pedigreed creative team also includes production designer Max Boas (Abominable), art director Iuri Lioi (How to Train Your Dragon trilogy), editor Robert Fisher Jr. (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), pre-vis lead Gary H. Lee (Kung Fu Panda), head of story Mark Sperber (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2) and line producer Jennifer Teter (Sherlock Gnomes).

The Magician’s Elephant joins Netflix’s fast growing original slate of animated features which includes Academy Award-nominated Klaus, Kris Pearn’s The Willoughbys, Oscar winner Glen Keane’s Over the Moon; as well as the Fall 2021 comedy Back to the Outback directed by Clare Knight and Harry Cripps, Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Adventure, Chris Williams’ The Sea Beast, Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild, Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and Aardman Animations’ sequel to Chicken Run.

Baobab Announces Next VR Adventure ‘Namoo’ from Erick Oh

Baobab Studios, the independent interactive animation production company, announced today its latest project: Namoo, a virtual reality experience written and directed by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Erick Oh. The now-completed film was created entirely in Facebook’s VR animation tool, Quill, with all of the props, characters, and environments hand-painted directly in VR. Baobab will release Namoo on Oculus platforms in 2021.

A narrative poem brought to life as an animated VR film, Namoo (meaning “tree” in Korean) is an ode to a grandfather’s passing and follows the journey of a budding artist — and his tree of life — from beginning to end.

“Erick Oh is an exciting, emerging director in animation, and from the moment he first shared his vision of Namoo with us, we knew we wanted to work with him. His wondrous artistic sensibilities are a natural fit for what we do at Baobab in that he crafts deeply personal films which connect with viewers both emotionally and universally,” said Maureen Fan, Co-Founder and CEO of Baobab Studios. “We are very proud of Namoo and look forward to sharing it with audiences very soon.”

“Baobab Studios is a great place to make films because they are willing to push boundaries in the name of art. I think that is why their films resonate so well with audiences and critics alike. Making Namoo was a joy because they were true collaborators who listened and gave me creative freedom to achieve my vision for the film,” said Oh.

Based in California, the celebrated filmmaker/artist has debuted his work at prestigious film festivals such as Annecy, Zagreb, SIGGRAPH and Anima Mundi, and earned awards and nominations from the Oscars, Annies and more. With his background in fine art from Seoul National University and film from UCLA, Oh was an animator at Pixar Animation Studios from 2010 to 2016, working on films such as Inside Out, The Dam Keeper and Brave. He then joined Tonko House with his fellow former Pixar artists and directed PIG : The Dam Keeper Poems, which won the Annecy Cristal in 2018. Oh is currently working on a variety of projects with his partners in film and animation, the VR/AR industry, and the contemporary art scene in the U.S. and South Korea.

Founded by Fan, Eric Darnell and Larry Cutler in 2015, six-time Emmy Award-winning Baobab Studios is the world’s leading independent interactive animation studio. With a mission to inspire you to dream and bring out your sense of wonder by making you matter, Baobab Studios has released five projects to date: Invasion!, Asteroids!, Jack, Crow: The Legend and Bonfire, all to critical acclaim and commercial success.
