Netflix Releasing Short ‘Sitara: Let Girls Dream’ from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy

Netflix is releasing a new animated short film from award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Titled Sitara: Let Girls Dream, the moving story centers on a 14-year-old girl named Pari who dreams of being a pilot, while growing up in a society that doesn’t allow her to dream.

“Young girls everywhere still face considerable hurdles in achieving their dreams. Sitara embodies that struggle; it is the story of Pari, a young girl who dreams of becoming a pilot and is robbed of it,” said Obaid-Chinoy. “For me, Sitara is more than a film; it is a movement that we want to start across the world, that encourages parents to invest in their girls’ dreams, freeing their daughters from the burdens of early marriage.”

Obaid-Chinoy is a two-time Academy Award winner and three-time Emmy Award winner, known for her work in films that highlight women’s experiences of inequality. She is the only female director to have won two Academy Awards by the age of 37, and her work has been screened around the world. Saving Face (HBO), which chronicles the lives of survivors of acid violence, won the 2012 Oscar for Best Documentary Short — Pakistan’s first Academy Award. A Girl in the River: The Price for Forgiveness (HBO) about honor killings in Pakistan won the 2015 Oscar for Best Documentary Short. Additional projects include: Song of Lahore, Peace Keepers and Transgenders: Pakistan’s Open Secret.

VICE Studios financed and produced the film. Imke Fehrmann serves as producer on the film. Women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem and Darla Anderson, the Academy Award-winning producer of Coco and Toy Story 3, VICE Media Group CEO Nancy Dubuc, and Emmy-nominated Ariel Wengroff serve as executive producers, as well as Sharmeen’s animation production company Waadi Animation. Adnan Saeed joins the crew as CG supervisor, while Salman Nasir is the Art Director and Kamran Khan as the animation director. Four-time Emmy winner and Grammy Award winner Laura Karpman is the short’s composer.

“Twelve million girls every year are forced into child marriage, losing their ability to dream. We hope this film gives young people and their families the ability to spark a conversation for a different perspective on what we allow our children to aspire to be when they grow up,” said Wengroff. “We are thrilled to have Netflix as a partner to share this project with the world.”

Steinem commented, “Thanks to the universal language of animation, Sitara will help girls everywhere to dream and to soar.”

GUCCI’s social impact initiative Chime for Change, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Ariel Wengroffwill create an impact campaign for the film around the theme “Let Girls Dream,” through which they hope to encourage girls around the world to share their dreams and gain inspiration from one another. Disney+ Picks Up Henson Puppet Talk Show ‘Earth to Ned’

While the previously announced Muppets project has been scrapped, Disney+ is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company for a new, out-of-this-world concept. Earth to Ned, a comedic celebrity chat show hosted by an affable alien puppet and his ET lieutenant, has received a straight-to-series order for the streamer, which launches Nov. 12.

Synopsis: Ned, a blue-skinned alien, and his lieutenant Cornelius were sent to scout Earth for an eventual invasion — but instead became obsessed with popular culture. Now they host a talk show, broadcast from the bridge of their spaceship hidden deep underground, where they interview our most precious commodity — celebrities — to talk about Ned’s current pop culture obsessions. Ned will be bringing real-life celebrity guests to his ship from across the known universe and interviewing them, late-night talk show style, in hopes of producing the ultimate talk show — making Ned a celebrity and putting him further off-mission. And the more Ned learns about our human culture, the more obsessed he becomes.

The series is produced by The Jim Henson Co. and Marwar Junction Productions; JHC Chairman Brian Henson (son of the late Jim Henson) and Head of Development & Production Vince Raisa are executive producers alongside Marwar’s Joseph Freed and Allison Berkley. Ned, Cornelius, their artificial intelligence BETI and their army of furry little CLODs (Cloned Living Objects of Destruction) are created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop (Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance).

‘Lizzie McGuire’ Cast Reunites with Hillary Duff for Disney+ Series

Hallie Todd, Robert Carradine and Jake Thomas are set to reprise their roles as Jo, Sam and Matt McGuire, joining previously announced Hilary Duff as Lizzie, in the Disney+ series Lizzie McGuire. The series continues the adventures of the popular character and her animated alter-ego. This week, the cast convenes for the first time in 15 years for a read-through of the first episode.

Original series creator Terri Minsky also returns as showrunner and executive producer.

“We are incredibly excited to bring back one of the most popular Disney Channel series of all time along with some beloved and familiar faces,” said Ricky Strauss, President, Content & Marketing, Disney+. “With Terri at the helm and Hilary, Hallie, Robert, and Jake back after all these years, it’s our honor to welcome the McGuire family into the Disney+ family.”

The new story picks up as Lizzie McGuire is just about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all – her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment – but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends, her loving family and her 13-year-old alter-ego in animated form, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood.

Hilary Duff and Rachel Winter will also executive produce alongside Minsky. Ranada Shepard is the co-executive producer. Lizzie McGuire is a production of Salty Pictures, Inc.

Maisel, Braun Set 3-Picture Animation Slate for Mythos Studios

Year-old shingle Mythos Studios is in active development on three animated features, according to company heads David Maisel (founding chairman of Marvel Studios) and Scooter Braun (record exec). In addition to previously announced Cupid, the slate included two projects inspired by late comic-book artist Michael Turner, whose works Mythos gained access to when it acquired an ownership stake in Aspen Comics.

Cupid stars Justin Bieber as the titular love god in a musical adventure take on the myth of Cupid and Psyche. The project is directed by Gorillaz animator Pete Candeland from a script by Carlos Kotkin (Rio 2), from a story by Maisel. Cupid is intended to kick off a connected “MythoVerse” for the studio, with stories and characters inspired by Greek and Roman mythology.

On the “TurnerVerse” side, Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander (of Netflix feature Next Gen) are developing Turner’s Fathom and Soulfire comic books.

Fathom is being written by Kristin Gore (Futurama, Saturday Night Live) — daughter of Vice President Al Gore. The comic centers on a marine biologist named Aspen Matthes, who discovers she is actually a member of an advanced, underwater-dwelling species.

Soulfire is getting a screenplay by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt (Star Trek: Discovery). Turner’s story follows an orphan boy named Malikai — the living key to magic’s return to the world, who must take on the dark lord of technology with the help of the winged goddess Grace.

Maisel and Braun have also built up their Los Angeles-based team with the addition of veteran animation and VFX production executive Aaron Dem (How to Train Your Dragon 2, Space Jam, Titanic) as VP of Physical Production. He joins a senior exec team which also includes Andrew Swett, formerly of Lord Miller, who joined Mythos last year as VP Production & Development.

Director Leah Shore Discusses Her New Adult Swim Short

Animation director Leah Shore recently wrote to let us know about her great new Adult Swim bumper, titled House of [AS]. which she made in collaboration with Johnny Woods and Anca Vlasan. She was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about this short homage to LGBTQ ball culture, and her interesting animation career.

House of [AS] from Leah Shore on Vimeo.

Animag: Can you tell us a little bit about how this short came to be?

Leah Shore: Adult Swim’s bumper producer, Anca Vlasan, contacted me to pitch a few ideas for a few bumpers and I immediately pitched this idea, which is something I’ve been wanting to make for a while. It was first pitched as a live-action piece, but they wanted an animated piece, which is also great! I was also thrilled the concept was approved. The project started around this past June, and I produced it in my spare time while working on a few other freelance gigs. It took around four months to make because it was just myself and my talented friend, Johnny Woods.

Can you tell us about your animation process? What was your budget?

I edited together a compilation of Ball performances that I scoured the internet over and strung out a sequence into something that made sense to me. I then semi rotoscoped over it while altering the performers entire looks, clothing, hair, faces, bodies, etc., so it would be my own illustration in the end. I hired Johnny Woods — who’s, again, a talented 3D artist — to produce 3D rooms for the performers. I wanted to convey Ball in a fun, creative way in 30 seconds because that’s the allotted amount of time I had. My budget was $2,500.

What were some of your visual influences?

I was influenced by the infamous Keith Haring, fingers snapping, fans and judges who judge the crap at Ball performances. I wanted fun, bright, neon/pastel colors and I thought it would be wonderful to have the performers to match the backgrounds colorwise. They’re a hodgepodge of rainbows. It’s in the end celebratory and wonderful. I wanted the viewer to feel excitement, happiness and perhaps look up what Ballroom was if they didn’t know what it was before.

Why do you think it’s important to have queer representation in animation?

I think it’s important to have queer animation everywhere. I think it’s slowly happening, but I figured that I’d pitch it to this network because I’ve not really seen it blatantly there. It needed something else other than violence and overtly sexual content. (Which is something I myself normally produce. Go check out my porn holiday card [on Vimeo].) I wanted to make something that people who tune into the network regularly wouldn’t normally think about watching, and fall in love with. I think that answered your question?

What are you working on next?

I’m currently finishing up my first music video, which is a song by a Dutch metal band. It is AMAZE-ing. I am very excited about that. Besides that, I’m writing a few shows and other fun things. I’m trying very hard to make content I care about these days and am very careful with what I produce.

Can you tell us about your background a little bit?

I studied film, animation and video at the Rhode Island School of Design. I thought I was going to major in industrial design, but after taking a few of the classes there and constantly making funny products with hilarious backgrounds, I figured out that film was my subject. Story is my favorite thing to pursue, and animation is fabulous because I can combine any medium and make a unique product. I love sculpture, painting, fabricating, audio, music, writing — and you can combine all of it in film.

Any advice to LGBTQ animation hopefuls and professionals?

Keep making things, always be you and make your own content with any subject.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Don’t be afraid to make LGBTQ+ content. Don’t be afraid to speak up! Also, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank Anca and Johnny for being amazing, talented and incredibly supportive. It’s a strange world that we live in!

You can learn more about Leah and some of her other awesome projects at vimeo.com/leahshore.

HBO Max Orders 4 ‘Adventure Time: Distant Lands’ Specials

Come along with me! HBO Max is re-crystallizing the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning journeys of Finn the human and Jake the dog through the Land of Ooo, greenlighting four new one-hour specials titled Adventure Time: Distant Lands. These HBO Max exclusive premieres will begin with the first two set to debut on the streamer in 2020.

“The enchanted world of Adventure Time has mesmerized viewers and critics alike as Finn and Jake right wrongs and battle evil,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max. “The addition of these specials to the HBO Max kids and family programming lineup is sure to make kids everywhere say ‘Slam-bam-in-a-can!’”

The 2020 releases BMO and Obsidian will be followed by Wizard City and Together Again at a later date.

BMO follows the lovable little robot from Adventure Time. When there’s a deadly space emergency in the farthest reaches of the galaxy, there’s only one hero to call, and it’s probably not BMO. Except that this time it is!

Obsidian features Marceline & Princess Bubblegum as they journey to the imposing, beautiful Glass Kingdom — and deep into their tumultuous past — to prevent an earthshaking catastrophe.

Wizard City follows Peppermint Butler, starting over at the beginning, as just another inexperienced Wizard School student. When mysterious events at the campus cast suspicion on Pep, and his checkered past, can he master the mystic arts in time to prove his innocence?

Together Again brings Finn and Jake together again, to rediscover their brotherly bond and embark on the most important adventure of their lives.

Adventure Time was a groundbreaking series and a creative playground for so many talented creative artists,” said Rob Sorcher, Chief Content Officer, Cartoon Network Studios. “Producing Adventure Time: Distant Lands for HBO Max will allow our studio to explore this beloved world in an all-new format.”

Created by Pendleton Ward and executive produced by Adam Muto, Adventure Time is a critically acclaimed show that garnered numerous entertainment awards and cultivated a generation of talent who have helmed such hits as Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall and Clarence. Adventure Time: Distant Lands is produced by Cartoon Network Studios.

WildBrain Picks Up Wise Blue’s ‘Hero Dad’ for Worldwide Distribution

Wise Blue Studios (Spain) announces that season one (26 x 5’) of its new non-dialogue preschool series, Hero Dad, has been acquired for worldwide distribution by the global children’s content company, WildBrain. A comedic series about a single father and his curious little daughter, Hero Dad never loses sight of fun as it conveys positive messages for kids within the shifting paradigms of the modern family. Hero Dad is also one of the first animated series produced using Unity’s innovative game engine, allowing real-time 4K rendering in a highly streamlined production process.

Recently featured by Unity at Siggraph 2019, Los Angeles, CA, and by WildBrain at MIPCOM, Cannes, Hero Dad is produced by Spain-based Wise Blue Studios in co-production with À Punt Mèdia and with the collaboration of the Institut Valencià de Cultura IVC.

“We’re delighted that WildBrain has picked up Hero Dad for worldwide distribution,” said Maxi Valero, Creative Director and Executive Producer, Wise Blue Studios. “Hero Dad is not only innovative from a technological point of view, but also in the very conception of its theme. We never lose sight of the fact that children, especially at preschool ages, learn best by having fun. We have based the series’ educational philosophy on Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, which is reflected in the daily trials and tribulations of this modern family and their comedic adventures.”

“We see technology as a tool in the service of storytelling,” said Nathalie Martinez, co-director of the show and Producer at Wise Blue Studios. “For Hero Dad, technology helped us focus on our story about the life of a single-parent family, where the father takes care of the daughter as they work together to solve the daily challenges and learn the daily lessons that every little kid faces. By having the father be the primary caregiver, the series conveys a message of integration to children, reflecting from the very heart of the series both the family diversity of our current society and the evolution and equalization of male and female roles in contemporary families.”

“We’re pleased to add this wonderful new series from the talented team at Wise Blue Studios into our distribution roster,” said Richard Rowe, Director of International Acquisitions and Co-Productions, WildBrain. “Hero Dad conveys a positive message to kids about modern family role models while also taking a meaningful step forward with innovating the animation process. We look forward to sharing Hero Dad with broadcasters and streaming platforms around the world, and also through our own WildBrain Spark network on YouTube.”

Hero Dad, directed by Maxi Valero and Nathalie Martinez, is centered on a father who arrives home from work each day, changes into his superhero costume – rain boots, kitchen gloves, a tablecloth cape and a swimsuit over his trousers – and takes care of, teaches and plays with his curious 3-year-old daughter, Miao. The non-dialogue animated comedy, aimed at preschoolers 2 to 6, features the misadventures of this homemade superhero, who is kind of clumsy and ultimately always ends up being rescued by his clever little daughter, who learns the lesson of the day as the student becomes the teacher.

In the production of Hero Dad, Wise Blue Studios employed groundbreaking technology by utilizing Unity’s game engine. It is one of the first television series to ever employ this cutting-edge technology, which allows 4K rendering in real time, and as a result has created an innovative, stream-lined workflow for CGI animation. The technical and artistic team at Wise Blue Studios achieved one of the very first successful combinations of the technologies of television animation and video game production, providing a case study for streamlining workflow and advancing animation production toward a new standard.

USC John C. Hench Division of Animation & Digital Arts Turns 25

USC’s School of Cinematic Arts’ John C. Hench Division of Animation & Digital Arts (Hench DADA) celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, it was announced by Teresa Cheng, Chair of Hench-DADA. Sponsored by Digital Domain, the official celebration is to take place during SCA’s annual “First Frame” showcase on October 24 at the Directors Guild of America in Hollywood.

Animation has always been a strong component of the USC cinematic arts education going all the way back to 1933, when Cinema Chair Dr. Boris Morkovin lectured on Walt Disney cartoons and had Walt Disney himself to the campus to meet with students. Throughout the decades as new technologies began to change how the craft was practiced, USC continued to adapt their curriculum and respond to the growing needs of their students.

The Master of Fine Arts in film, video and computer animation was formally established in 1993. The following year, Vibeke Sorenson, an expert in the art of stereoscopic, interactive moving imagery, was brought in to guide the MFA program, and within a year she was installed as the chairperson of the renamed Division of Animation & Digital Arts. In 1997 famed Disney animator John C. Hench donated an entire animation-drawing studio to the program. In the next decade, supported by substantial endowment from the John C. Hench Foundation, the John C. Hench Division of Animation & Digital Arts was created.

Today, the Division offers one of the most comprehensive curricula at any university, including courses in all facets of animation and digital arts, among them: classic character animation, 2D and 3D storytelling, performance capture, visual effects, motion graphics, stop-motion, experimental filmmaking, installations and multimedia, documentary animation and visualizing scientific research.

“Animation is one of the most successful genres in the entertainment industry,” observed SCA Dean Elizabeth Daley. “The John C. Hench Division of Animation & Digital Arts offers animation programs with the goal to provide trained artists and filmmakers immediately ready to meet the needs of this critical part of the industry. Under Teresa Cheng’s stewardship, Hench has in a very short time grown in scope and stature throughout the world.”

“Our division provides students with a professional environment for the study and production of all practical and theoretical applications, including 2D and 3D feature and television animation, character animation, visual effects, motion capture, projection mapping, motion graphics, and virtual reality. Our curricula along with our esteemed faculty of professionals truly prepares students for careers in animation,” Chang said. ““We are immensely proud of our students and their accomplishments. And take great pride in that a Hench student has won a Student Academy Award for a fourth year in a row — including Alicja Jasina, for Once Upon A Line in 2016; Devon Manney, for Cradle in 2017; Yu Yu, for Daisy in 2018; and Emre Okten, for Two in 2019.”

“First Frame” is the John C. Hench Division of Animation & Digital Arts’ annual celebration and showcase of the latest achievements by its students and recent alumni. These animated films cover the gamut of genres and techniques, along with installations of work from Hench-DADA M.F.A. students.

WIA Diversity Awards at SPARK Honor Sony, Netfix’s Melissa Cobb and Brenda Lopez’s ‘ABEO’

Women in Animation (WIA) is proud to announce the third annual WIA Diversity Awards recipients, presented in partnership with the Spark Computer Graphics Society (Spark CG). The recipients of this year’s awards are: Sony Pictures Animation; Melissa Cobb, Vice President, Original Animation, Netflix; and filmmaker Brenda Lopez for her short ABEO. The awards will be presented by WIA President Marge Dean on opening night of SPARK ANIMATION 2019, which runs October 24-27 in Vancouver, Canada.

The WIA Diversity Awards were established to recognize and honor individuals, films and organizations that have made a significant impact in expanding the diversity of voices in the art and industry of animation, either through their own creative work, by fostering the work of others, or by leading diversity initiatives that enrich our industry and society. This year’s list of recipients are as follows, and were chosen on the following basis:

Sony Pictures Animation – Voted on by select members of the WIA board of directors, the WIA Diversity Award is being given to Sony Pictures Animation for its support of and work in creating content featuring diverse characters in such films as the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which presented Miles Morales, a Black Latino Brooklyn teen, in the lead role; and director Matthew A. Cherry’s short film, Hair Love, which centers on the relationship between African-American father Stephen, his daughter Zuri, and her hair. Hair Love producer Karen Toliver, the studio’s Executive Vice President of Creative, will attend the festival and accept the award in behalf of Sony Pictures Animation.

“In today’s world, where content is reaching people in more ways than ever before, it is vitally important to ensure that the stories we tell are representative of the global audience,” said Kristine Belson, President, Sony Pictures Animation, Features and Series. “It is our goal to foster creatives who want to tell diverse stories, and give them the support they need to do so. We are strong supporters of the mission of Women in Animation, and are grateful to be recognized by such a fantastic organization.”

Melissa Cobb – Also voted on by select members of the WIA board of directors, Melissa Cobb has been chosen as a recipient for her work supporting female creators at Netflix in her role as Vice President, Original Animation. Cobb oversees an ambitious slate of family animated feature films and series that reach audiences of all ages around the globe. Ranging from feature films such as Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon in Ireland and Gurinder Chadha’s Pashmina in India to kids series like Elizabeth Ito’s City of Ghosts and Megan Nicole Dong’s Centaurworld in Hollywood, Cobb is making great strides to empower the next generation of female animation directors and showrunners by putting them in the highest leadership positions on their Netflix series and films. In addition to overall deals with industry greats including Darla Anderson and Chris Nee, other projects at Netflix include animated international originals Mama K’s Team 4, created by Malenga Mulendema in Zambia, and Fernanda Frick’s Raise the Bar! In Chile. Cobb will be in attendance at SPARK 2019 to accept the award.

“Melissa Cobb was selected for this award because her commitment to diversity — including hiring many first-time filmmakers and showrunners — is greater than any other studio executive in the past year,” said WIA Vice President Jinko Gotoh, “At Annecy 2018 she asked me for recommendations of female directors and I gave her a list of three first-time filmmakers. They’re all now at Netflix. How empowering and cool is that?”

Brenda Lopez’s ABEO – A juried award given by Spark Computer Graphics Society, Lopez’s ABEO is a hard-hitting mixed media animated short that depicts the journey of Nadia and Lupe, two immigrants who risked their lives to cross the Arizona desert in search of a better life.

“Brenda Lopez’s ABEO was noted by the SPARK ANIMATION Festival Jury for its clever and unique use of mixed media to effectively tell a powerful story of survival,” said festival director Marina Antunes.

A Mexican-Canadian multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal, Lopez’s primary interests lie in film, the visual arts and sound design. Often drawing inspiration from past experiences, she is interested in the exploration of human emotions and the creation of socially engaged content. Lopez recently completed her graduation film at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in the Film Animation Program.

“Women in Animation is thrilled to spotlight and celebrate the organizations and artists who are making a difference in WIA’s mission of reaching 50/50 by 2025, and we continue to be grateful to SPARK CG for their ongoing support of the WIA Diversity Awards,” said WIA President Marge Dean. “Congratulations to all of this year’s honorees for their enormous contributions to this cause.”
