APC Kids, the children’s entertainment division of leading co-production and distribution company APC Studios, has signed a far-reaching international distribution agreement with CTC Media for its brand new animated series, Little Tiaras. The new deal follows a hugely successful collaboration between the companies on global hit series Kid-E-Cats.
APC Kids will launch the magical 52 x 7’ series Little Tiaras, aimed at girls aged 4-7, at MIPJunior and MIPCOM. APC holds global rights outside of Russia, CIS and mainland China to the show, which is produced by Melnitsa Animation Studio and owned by CTC Media and CTB Film Company.
Little Tiaras stars five Princesses – Rooney, The Rusty Haired Princess; Lisa, The Frog Princess; Daria, The Never-A-Laugh Princess; Helen, The Fair Princess; and Dorma, the Sleeping Princess. They arrive from faraway lands to study wizardry on a mysterious island of Wondermont. Adventures, secrets and dangers await them on their way to learning the wisdom of magic taught by a great wizard known only as The Immortal. Welcome to Wondermont School of Magic!
The first season of 26 episodes is available after premiering in Russia in Fall 2018 (CTC and Carousel). The second season is airing in Russia from Fall 2019 and will be available in 2020. APC is bringing on board U.K. story editors David Moore (Paddington, Thomas and Friends, Claude, Teletubbies) and Emma Hogan (Ollie, Boy Girl Dog Cat Mouse Cheese, Peek Zoo) to work on the new episodes.
“APC Kids and CTC have developed a hugely successful relationship over the last few years, creating and rolling out the TV series and licensing program for Kid-E-Cats. We plan to emulate this model with Little Tiaras,” said Lionel Marty, Managing Director of APC Kids. “We are confident that the storylines of friendship, adventure and magic will resonate with young girls globally.”
Ksenia Gordienko, Director of Animation Department, CTC Media, added: “We are very happy to see our partnership with APC Kids growing. Together we will be working on the global roll-out strategy for this brand. The magical project will be presented for the global audience in the upcoming MIPJunior and MIPCOM in Cannes.”

As part of the agreement, the VOD365 has also picked up exclusive worldwide YouTube rights to the program, which will see The Brompton Tales leading Ketchup’s kids and family programming line-up.
The Ketchup YouTube channel launches later this year.

Joel Kuwahara, co-founder and principal at Bento Box, and Ollie Green, VP of production at Adult Swim, discussed the fast-evolving, challenging and interesting world of adult animation during an insightful panel held at The Animation Conference section of the popular Ottawa Intl. Animation Festival this week.
Kuwahara, who has worked critically acclaimed shows such as The Simpsons, The Critic and Bob’s Burgers, told the audience that although Bento Box was bought by Fox Animation in August, the studio still pitches new projects to other entities such as Netflix, Amazon and other outlets. “We are always looking for new partners here in Canada and internationally. We are trying to grow our industry, and everyone’s trying to keep up with the pace and the growing demand of high-quality and fresh creative voices,” he noted.
Green, whose producing credits include popular shows such as as Rick and Morty, Robot Chicken, SuperJail!, The Shivering Truth and the recent Tigtone, added, “We are constantly seeking things that we haven’t seen before. Shows with a strong point of view that are not chasing a trend or imitating what is popular. Some of our most unique and successful projects have been driven by a great creative artist or talent that has had a really strong career in comics or pop culture. Being funny always helps!”
Both producers noted that animated content can be a potent force in pushing the envelope politically and socially. “We can explore different areas beyond the family sitcom, thanks to the growth in streaming appetite,” said Kuwahara. “We can use animation to tell different types of stories. At Bento Box, we have a number of projects in the pipeline that are completely different from what we have been doing in the past. Everyone wants to work with creators that see the world differently.”
Keep ’em Wanting More
When asked about pitching animated shows, Kuwahara said it’s always the best strategy to leave the execs in the room wanting more. “The best pitches leave them wanting to see more,” he noted. “After your finish you pitch, you want them to call you back for a second meeting or a follow-up. Also, I feel the days of showing a pitch bible are over. You want to put together as much of a visual presentation as possible. We work on the performance, how to make it more fun and making it the best visual representation of the show.”
Green brought up Adult Swim’s shorts anthology program called Smalls, which serves as a way for the studio to find fresh talent through social media and digital networks. “We have been releasing these little packages through this program, and we have this opportunity to use that as our talent incubator, which will lead to longer projects. Everyone is looking for good adult animated content, so we don’t want to leave any stone unturned,” she said.
Kuwahara said he is always finding great animation talent on Instagram and enjoys getting lost in the social media rabbit-hole in search of good work. “I do it because I love it, and it reminds of the 1980s, when I used to go to used record stores and look for artists, and one album would lead me to another and another. I love finding these talented animators and sharing them with everyone.”
Commenting on the tough comedy climate and what animation can get away with in the adult field, both Kuwahara and Green pointed out that their writers have found clever ways to tackle hot, timely topics. “We want to tell stories that shake things up, and sometimes you can go bigger and harder because animation inherently softens jokes. Also, we have many executives that act as our checks and balances along the way,” said Kuwhara. “But we always try to push the envelope and get fresh points of view out there.”
Green admitted that Adult Swim was traditionally been known for telling the male side of things, but in recent years, the studio has tried to open its doors to more female voices as well. “Historically, we were just working with the people we had in our building, and as we expanded, we weren’t getting pitches from women,” said Green. “We acknowledged that and know that we should be doing better in that area. But our development people are now bringing in more diverse stories. I think our industry as a whole is improving in that regard.”
Kuwahara said he’s thrilled that most of the producers at Bento Box are women. “It was nice to see that on a management level, most of our shows were being produced by women. The directing ratio is still 65 to 70 percent male, but we are seeing a lot of new female and diverse talent rising. It has been encouraging to see more fresh, diverse talent coming out of the schools.”
In closing, both animation professionals advised the creative talent and producers in the audience to keep drawing and creating. “You have to go back and create more shows when you get a rejection,” said Kuwahara. “You have to go to the shows, the festivals, and meet people, because this industry is about being proactive, knowing your goals and evolving. Just keep working. I have worked on every type of animated show in my career, some have been very difficult, and some have not been that great. But if doesn’t matter if you’ve worked on the worst show, because you can even learn from that! You learn what not to do again.”
The Ottawa Intl. Animation Festival continues through Sunday. Friday’s lineup includes a presentation of Nickelodeon’s new series The Casagrandes (featuring the show’s producer Karen Malach, art director Miguel Gonzalez and supervising producer Alan Foreman) and a screening of Steven Universe The Movie, followed by a Q&A with creator Rebecca Sugar, as well as screenings of numerous acclaimed indie shorts from around the world and features such as Gints Zilbalodis’ Away and Jeremy Clapin’s I Lost My Body.

Synopsis: When teenager Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends, Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor) and Peng (Albert Tsai), name him “Everest” and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth. But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish (Eddie Izzard), a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) to help Everest get home.

The Harvey Awards Steering Committee has announced the 2019 inductees into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame, ahead of the annual event held at New York Comic Con. With seven recipients being honored, this group represents the largest of all Hall of Fame induction classes in the 31-year history of the Harvey Awards. It includes two of the most respected contemporary creators in their field, Mike Mignola (Hellboy) and Alison Bechdel (Fun Home), and five of Harvey Kurtzman’s core 1950s MAD collaborators, who will be posthumously inducted: Will Elder, Jack Davis, John Severin, Marie Severin and Ben Oda.
Additionally, the Comics Industry Pioneer honor will be presented to Maggie Thompson for the work she and her late husband, Don Thompson, did as longtime editors of the Comics Buyer’s Guide.
“My very first comic industry award was the 1994 Harvey Award for Best Artist on Hellboy. I never expected that award, but I took it as a sign that I might actually be on to something,” said Mignola. “It is a great honor to be inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame — something I certainly never could have imagined. And I’ll take it as proof that I haven’t embarrassed myself too badly over the last 25 years.”
“As someone who existed for so long on the crumbling newsprint margins, it’s surprising and a bit unsettling to receive this recognition from the corridors of comics power. Where did I go wrong?” Bechdel quipped. “No, just kidding. If you had told me when I was reading Kurtzman parodies in my playpen that I would one day be inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame, I would have plotzed. I cannot imagine a greater, nor a more furshlugginer, honor.”
Paul Levitz, longtime DC Comics executive, including 17 years as the publisher of MAD magazine, who will induct Elder, Davis, the Severins and Oda during the ceremony, added: “Inducting these five contributors to the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame is both redundant and obvious. As collaborators with Harvey on so much of the great work he did at E.C. Comics, they are already enshrined in every comics scholar and fan’s hall of fame as legends, so they are certainly deserving of the honor of formal induction here. I had the honor of working and being friends with three of the five (Jack, Marie, and the inimitable Ben), and loved the work of the other two (Will and John). I can confidently say that they’d be amazed and ever so pleased.”
The inductees will be recognized at the 31st annual Harvey Awards ceremony on Friday, October 4 at 8:30 p.m. at Hudson Mercantile. See harveyawards.org for more information.
Mike Mignola began working as a comic-book artist in 1982, working for both Marvel and DC Comics before creating Hellboy, published by Dark Horse Comics in 1994. What began as a single comic book series would eventually expand to a “Hellboy Universe” of related graphic novels, prose novels, short-story anthologies, and animated and live-action films. He also wrote and drew The Amazing Screw-On Head and Other Curious Objects. He has co-written novels with Christopher Golden (Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire) and Thomas Sniegoski (Grim Death and Bill the Electrocuted Criminal); worked with Francis Ford Coppola on Bram Stoker’s Dracula; was a production designer on Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire; and was visual consultant to Guillermo Del Toro on Blade II, Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. A new Hellboy film, directed by Neil Marshall, was recently released. Mignola’s comics and graphic novels have earned numerous awards and are published in a great many countries. He lives in Southern California with his wife and a very demanding cat.
Alison Bechdel is known in the cartooning industry for her pioneering work on the strip Dykes to Watch Out For, which ran from 1983 to 2008. She is the author of two acclaimed graphic memoirs, Fun Home and Are You My Mother? A stage-musical adaptation of Fun Home opened on Broadway in 2015 and won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Bechdel is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a MacArthur Fellowship. She is currently working on a graphic memoir called The Secret to Superhuman Strength.
