Cheeky Little Media & Sinking Ship Introduce Animated BFFs ‘Flower & Flour’

Australia’s Cheeky Little Media and Canada’s Sinking Ship Entertainment (SSE) announce their co-production on a new animated series, Flower & Flour, for children aged four to seven years old. Created by Dan Mansour, the 39 x 7’series follows the whimsical adventures of seven-year-old Flower and her best friend, Flour the cat.

Flower & Flour is a buddy comedy about friendship and the joy of discovering the world that’s waiting on your doorstep. Set in an urban neighborhood, the show emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, kindness, and understanding and that with a little fun and imagination we can transform our world into something better.

The show is inspired by Mansour’s and his wife Romy’s childhood experiences, with many of the adventures drawing from Romy’s upbringing in her family’s restaurant, which serves as the inspiration for the show’s central setting — The Dumpling House.

“We’ve loved the development journey with creator Dan Mansour on Flower & Flour,” said Patrick Egerton, Chief Content Officer at Cheeky Little Media “The show concept and characters are straight from the heart and come from lived experience. It’s rare to have a show that is so joyous and authentic, but somehow cool as well. We’re so excited to be co-producing with the good folks at Sinking Ship.”

Carla De Jong, Head of Co-Production and International Partnerships for Sinking Ship Entertainment, added, “We’ve admired Cheeky Little Media and their wonderful collection of shows for a long time. We’ve been eager to collaborate with them, and as soon as they introduced us to Flower & Flour, we were captivated. These lovable characters bring such a perfect blend of humor and charm that we knew we had found the ideal project to work on together.”

For Cheeky Little Media, Flower & Flour joins the studio’s lineup of multi-season animated hits like Vegesaurs and Kangaroo Beach, produced for ABC in Australia as well as many other networks around the world.

This series also expands SSE’s growing portfolio of animated productions. It follows the global success of Builder Brothers Dream Factory, produced for Corus in Canada, and their animation service work on Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, currently streaming on Netflix. The SSE team is leading the 3D animation for this project, which originally started in 2D.

Flower & Flour is scheduled to debut in 2026. Broadcast partners include ABC in Australia, TVOkids, SRC and Knowledge Network in Canada. Developed and produced in association with the ABC and partners, with major funding support provided by Screen Australia, the Canadian Media Fund and the Shaw Rocket Fund with digital and visual effects supported by Screen NSW. SSE will distribute the series worldwide in association with HOPR Media with Cheeky Little Commercial managing the brand globally.

The series is created by Dan Mansour, directed by Cindy Sharka and written by Mansour, Wendy Hanna, Amy Stewart and Lawrence Leung, with Sam Carroll as script editor. Producers are Celine Goetz and Blair Powers; executive producers are Matthew J.R Bishop, Carla De Jong, Patrick Egerton, Celine Goetz, Blair Powers, Asher Bogart and Chris DiFiore.

Moose Toys Teams with Man of Action for ‘Heroes of Goo Jit Zu’ Animated Series

Moose Toys has entered into an entertainment development deal with creative studio and writing collective Man of Action Entertainment (MOA). Under the agreement, MOA, which has proven success showrunning hit series like Ben Ten, Sonic PrimeMarvel’s Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man, will create an animated series for the toymaker’s original brand Heroes of Goo Jit Zu.

The new relationship represents Moose Toys’ commitment to expanding its story-led brands across multi-platform entertainment and elevating strategic IP into true franchises, says the studio.

Introduced in 2019, Heroes of Goo Jit Zu delivers the squishiest, stretchiest, goo-filled action heroes who will always fight to save the day. The line’s popularity with kids spurred the development of an equally popular YouTube series, with 12 episodes amassing more than 335 million views. The new animated series represents a major next step for the brand.

One of Moose Toys’ most successful homegrown brands, Heroes of Goo Jit Zu encompasses a core cast of heroes and villains as well as fun new characters on either side of good and evil. The entire roster is equipped with superpowers that lend themselves to action-packed adventures. Designed to capture kids’ imaginations, the characters’ out-of-this-world creature features are further exaggerated by the gooey action figure line’s ability to stretch up to three times their size and ‘shape shift’ back to their original form.

“Expanding Heroes of Goo Jit Zu’s storytelling across digital, linear and streaming platforms is a testament to our belief in the brand’s enduring appeal and its ability to translate beyond the toy aisle. Man of Action will be our hand-in-hand partner delivering next level creativity, bringing the world of Heroes of Goo Jit Zu to life in fun and unexpected ways,” said Yvette Sittrop, VP Franchise Development, Moose Toys. “Their proven success in creating long running animated storytelling that’s both loved as great entertainment and also highly merchandisable aligns with our guiding goal of being the world’s most innovative toy company.”

Beyond the upcoming series, Moose has plans for further extensions for the brand including gaming, publishing and apparel, among others.

“Heroes of Goo Jit Zu is a natural fit with the Man Of Action experience and expertise. Our conversations with Moose made it clear that they are forward-thinking and willing to go anywhere the story needs to in order to grow the franchise in exciting directions,” said Steven T. Seagle, founding partner, Man of Action. Added fellow co-founder Duncan Rouleau, “There’s a real wealth of characters and concepts that are ripe for an expanded world mythology and a series of stories full of action, adventure and humor. It’s not a question of if we’ll have any good ideas, but which of those ideas to run with.”

Exclusive Clip: How the DreamWorks Team Rendered ‘The Wild Robot’ with a Human Touch

One of the year’s most highly acclaimed animated features, DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot makes its Digital debut through Universal Pictures Home Entertainment today, available to rent or own. The film boasts an impressive 98% on both Rotten Tomatoes’ critics-determined Tomatometer and audience ranked Popcornmeter.

Marking the home entertainment launch, Animation Magazine is sharing an exclusive clip from a behind-the-scenes featurette, in which the filmmaking team discuss the film’s unique look.

In the video, writer-director Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods) discusses the boons and challenges of CG animation, as an artist who came up when hand-drawn 2D was still the standard. “One of the things we lost [in the shift to CG] was some of the details and the warmth that you get in these hand-drawn characters,” he notes in the clip’s opening.

Head of look Baptiste Van Opstal later describes how the animation team worked in 2D layers of painterly touches in Photoshop to create the CG animation’s storybook quality. “All those little touches look the way they do because an artist did it,” production designer Raymond Zibach agrees.

An adaptation of Peter Brown’s award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot is an epic adventure following the journey of a robot, ROZZUM unit 7134 (“Roz” for short), that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.

The film features the voices of Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, Kit Connor, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Matt Berry and Ving Rhames.

The Wild Robot opened in theaters on September 27, and has earned $107.6 million in worldwide box office so far. Following today’s digital launch, the film will arrive on physical media on December 3. Additional home release details available here.

Making Cinematic Memories at L.A.’s Animation Is Film Festival

One of the best parts of being in Los Angeles the fall is enjoying the magic of the annual Animation Is Film festival at the Hollywood TCL Chinese Theater. This year is no exception as festival organizers have handpicked some of the best movies of 2024 so that fans can enjoy them on the big screen with fellow animation lovers (Oct. 18-20).

The influential event, which premiered Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio in 2022 and Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron in 2023 — both of which went on to claim the Oscar for Best Animated Feature later — promises to be another glorious trip to Toon Town this year. The festival opener is Annecy favorite The Colors Within, the new offering from Naoko Yamada, best known for her 2016 movie A Silent Voice.

L.A. audiences also get a chance to see the year’s other festival favorites such as Flow, Ghost Cat Anzu and Memoir of a Snail this month, as well as the much-anticipated North American premiere of Pete Browngardt’s The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, starring Porky Pig and Daffy Duck! You can also learn more about the biggest studio pics of the year at screenings/panels devoted to The Wild Robot, Moana 2, Inside Out 2 and Transformers One.

Away from the Kids’ Table

“The goal of each edition of AIF is to provide, over the course of a single weekend, a record, a document of the year in animation,” says festival director Matt Kaszanek. “So, in that sense, I’m reluctant to say that the program has individual ‘highlights.’ We see it as a single entity, made up of discrete units in conversation with one another. What is the state of animation in 2024? What is the state of filmmaking in 2024? And the answer is, ‘this.’”

Matt Kaszanek
Matt Kaszanek

Kaszanek, who has been at the helm of the festival from its inception in 2018 says he’s always excited to see animated features celebrated prominently at the big festivals from around the world. “Flow and Ghost Cat Anzu screened in Cannes (in Un Certain Regard and Directors Fortnight, respectively.) The Colors Within blew the roof off the place in Annecy! Boys Go to Jupiter was at Tribeca. Memoir of a Snail and Piece By Piece were in Telluride and Toronto. The world is embracing these films, and now the U.S. will have its chance! I think last year’s IMAX premiere of The Boy and the Heron was a real turning point for the festival.”

When asked about the most underrated titles at the event, Kaszanek responds, “I do feel like all animated films tend to be ‘underrated’ to a degree in that there’s a too large segment of the population, certainly in this country, that file them in a subsection of films. Guillermo Del Toro calls it ‘The kids’ table.’ But take a film like Flow or Adam Elliot’s Memoir of Snail… they swept the top prizes in Annecy and have been greeted by rave reviews (not positive reviews, bona fide raves) virtually everywhere that they’ve played. It’s hard to say they’re underrated now. But ask me again if either doesn’t show up in The New York Times’ end of year Best Films list!”

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie
The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

Memories of the Master

Kaszanek has a clever answer when he’s cornered to pick his favorite memory from previous editions of Animation Is Film. “There’s a scene at the end of the movie Roman Holiday where a reporter asks Audrey Hepburn’s Princess Ann which of the cities that she visited on her European tour was her favorite. She starts with a bland response to avoid offending anybody (‘Each was special in its own way…’) but then, she can’t help herself and blurts out ‘Rome!’ I started to say, ‘I couldn’t possibly choose just one memory,’ but screw it! It’s Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio screening!”

Guillermo del Toro addresses an enthusiastic audience at the 2022 edition of Animation Is Film.

“It was at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater. and we had a hard out time because there was an AMPAS screening scheduled right after” he continues. “After the film, GDT has this in-depth conversation about the state of animation with Phil Tippett and they get so into it that they completely lose track of the time. I’m standing in the wings waving frantically for them to wrap it up. Finally, Guillermo sees me (or, more likely, stops pretending that he doesn’t see me!) and then says, into the microphone so, like, a thousand people can hear, ‘Hey, let’s continue this talk in the lobby!’ We, of course, have made zero plans for this. We have no stanchions, we have no security, even our photographer has gone home! But there’s Guillermo del Toro standing in the middle of the lobby, surrounded by fans, and the guy’s just holding court and answering everybody’s questions for an additional 45-50 minutes. Eventually, the Academy guy makes his way over to me and I think I’m about to be yelled at for commandeering their lobby. Instead, he just goes: ‘This right here. This is what it’s all about.’”

He concludes, “So… Each, in its own way, was unforgettable. It would be difficult to… Rome! Rome. I will cherish my visit here in memory as long as I live!”

You can make your own Animation Is Film memories, Oct. 18-20, at the TCL Chinese Theaters in Hollywood. For an up-to-the-minute schedule, visit animationisfilm.com.

Florian Maurice, Maxime Foltzer & Estelle Bonnardel

Synopsis: As the world nears its end, a man stuck in a fish costume races against the clock towards a mysterious tower.

SILVER — Origami — Digital Hollywood University (Japan)
Kei Kanamori

Director Statement: The representation of origami in existing films and other visual media has been lacking realistic elements. Previously artists visually tricked the audience by, for example, swapping the shapes before and after folding to make it look like it was folded.

In this project, I focused on accurately producing the shape of origami and the animation of its transformation in 3D. To achieve this, I developed my own technique in origami modelling and simulation workflow in Maya and Houdini.

Everything that appears in this film is based on skills and techniques used in actual origami art. (From TheRookies.co)

The title hits shelves just in time for the holiday season, in bookstores on Tuesday, November 12 and in comic-book shops on November 13 (MSRP: U.S. $35 | Canada $44 | U.K. £25). Pre-order is also available at abramsbooks.com!

Timed to the title’s debut, Animation Magazine is thrilled to deliver a first-look at this tome dedicated to the brave men, women, robots and crustaceans of Planet Express!

This deluxe, 176-page hardcover features commentary from creator Matt Groening (The Simpsons), showrunner David X. Cohen and producer Claudia Katz, as well as from the show’s writers, animators and voice actors. Readers can dive into the development and visual history of all 150 episodes, including brand-new content, never-before-seen concept art, sketches, developmental work and a complete episode guide.

“When the show premiered on March 28, 1999, it was heralded as one of the best-looking shows on television,” Katz writes in her forward. “This book is a tribute to all the talented artists who helped mold, build, and shape the beautiful, stunning, epic and (25 years later) ever-expanding Futurama Universe.”

The Art of Futurama [Abrams ComicArts]

Beginning in 1999, Futurama ran for four seasons on Fox, where it earned a devoted and passionate fanbase. In 2009, the show returned for three more seasons before it was canceled in 2013. Hulu revived the series again in 2022 for its eight season, and additional seasons have been greenlit. The show has won six Emmys and nine Annie awards and inspired numerous comic books and games. TV Guide named Futurama one of the Greatest TV Cartoons of All Time.

The series follows Philip J. Fry (voiced by Billy West), a slacker who was cryogenically frozen for 1,000 years. He wakes in 30th century New York and begins working as an interplanetary delivery man alongside his boss, the mad scientist Professor Farnsworth (West), his one-eyed girlfriend Turanga Leela (Katy Sagal), and his robot best friend Bender (John DiMaggio).

“Abrams has a long history with Matt Groening and books on The Simpsons,” said Abrams ComicArts Editor-in-Chief Charles Kochman. “We are honored to expand our publishing to include The Art of Futurama, working closely with Matt and his team on this comprehensive and definitive visual history, one that is a must-have for any animation, television, or sci-fi fan.”

PBS Distribution Picks Up ‘Piripenguins’ for NorAm

Eaglet Films announced today that PBS Distribution has acquired the North American distribution rights to Eaglet Films’ brand new kids 2D/CG-animated comedy series Piripenguins, about a lively group of penguin friends who have fun living together on an iceberg.

Piripenguins (52 x 11’) is produced by Eaglet Films, whose credits include Quentin Blake’s Box of Treasures, together with Red Monk Studio (Italy) and in partnership with Wild Child Animation (Scotland), and has been commissioned by BBC and RAI, alongside support from the UK Global Screen Fund — financed by the U.K. Government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport and administered by the BFI.

Piripenguins is a new children’s animated series about a cheerful colony of penguins enjoying life to the fullest on a fun-filled iceberg. The comedy series is aimed at five- to eight-year olds and centers on five lively penguins, each with distinctive personalities and voiced by a diverse cast. Life on the iceberg throws up lots of challenges and funny situations for Pancake, Nugget, Brinicle, Looph and Flutter who learn about life, friendships and have lots of fun along the way.

“The pitch for this delightful children’s series immediately engaged us with its combination of imaginative storytelling and unique mix of animation techniques, bringing together all the elements for entertaining family viewing,” said PBS Distribution President Andrea Downing. ‘We are thrilled to be the North American distribution partner on this new series with the extraordinary team at Eaglet Films and commissioners BBC and RAI.”

Eaglet Films’ Executive Producer, Tess Cuming, commented, “As a major global player, we couldn’t be more delighted that PBS Distribution is boarding the Piripenguins’ fun-filled iceberg, to distribute our exciting new kids brand in North America. The fun-loving Piripenguins may have started their journey in the form of a tiny doodle on a post it note by creator Massimo Fenati, now they truly have the world at their flippers and it will be exciting to see where this journey takes them!”

Animated Titles Take 5 of the Top 10 Box Office Slots

It was an animated bonanza at the domestic box-office this weekend. While Cineverse’s indie horror release Terrifier 3 rode the spooky season enthusiasm to a No. 1 opening with $18.3 million, half of the Top 10 slots were occupied by animated releases representing a variety of artistic aesthetics and storytelling angles.

DreamWorks Animation/Universal Pictures’ critically acclaimed The Wild Robot hung onto the No. 2 spot in its third weekend, taking $13.45M (-28.8%) from 3,854 theaters (-143), for a domestic total of $83.7M ($148.455M worldwide). Rendered in painterly CGI and aimed at families, the film is adapted from Peter Brown’s bestselling book and is directed by three-time Oscar nominee Chris Sanders (The Croods, How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch). DWA is already planning a sequel to the warmly received adaptation.

Newcomer Piece By Piece, the LEGO-inspired CG-animated biopic about music icon Pharrell Williams, posted up at No. 5 with $3.8M from 1,865 theaters. The Focus Features release is the fifth best documentary opening of the last 10 years, and is tracking particularly well with young adults 18-24 (40% of the audience) and men (58%). The pic, which was filmed as a standard documentary before being remade with whimsical, synesthesia-effects-infused animation, was directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom).

Coming in right behind a different toy-based adventure, Paramount/Hasbro’s Transformers One, which is hanging in the Top 10 in its fourth frame with $3.65M (-32.3%) from 2,758 theaters (-348) at No. 6. Oscar winning animation director Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4) helmed the franchise’s fully-animated hit.

Representing the otaku contingent, Toho’s My Hero Academia: You’re Next blasted into U.S. theaters at No. 8 with $3.007M from 1,845 theaters. Directed by Tensai Okamura and based on the hit manga and anime created by Kohei Horikoshi, the franchise’s latest feature is its third-highest U.S. opening, behind 2021’s World Heroes’ Mission ($6.255M) and 2020’s Heroes Rising ($5.89M) but ahead of 2018’s Two Heroes($1.388M), all of which were released by FUNimation (now part of Crunchyroll).

And on behalf of classic stop-motion as well as the holidays, fans got to recapture the magic of Tim Burtons’ The Nightmare Before Christmas in a new seasonal re-release through Disney. The event engagement for the Henry Selick-directed 1993 pic came in at No. 9 with $2.3M from 1,700 screens.
