Disney+ to Unwrap Alfonso Cuarón & David Lowery’s New Stop-Motion Short ‘An Almost Christmas Story’ This Fall

0

A new animated short produced by acclaimed Spanish director Alfonso Cuarón will premiere on Disney + in November. Titled An Almost Christmas Story, the short is directed by David Lowery, and is inspired by the true story of a tiny owl named Rocky, who was found and rescued from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2020

The official synopsis reads: “An Almost Christmas Story follows Moon, a curious young owl who unexpectedly finds himself stuck in a Christmas tree destined for Rockefeller Plaza. In his attempts to escape the bustling city, Moon befriends a lost young girl named Luna. Together, they embark on a heartwarming adventure, discovering the magic of the holiday season and forming an unlikely bond as they journey back home to their parents.”

The holiday tale’s voice cast includes Cary Christopher as Moon, Estella Madrigal as Luna, Jim Gaffigan as Papa Owl, Mamoudou Athie as Pelly, Alex Ross Perry as Dave The Dog, Gianna Joseph as Peaky, Phil Rosenthal as Punt, with Natasha Lyonne as Pat and John C. Reilly as The Folk Singer, who performs four songs (two of them original numbers) in the short.

Lowery’s previous credits include A Ghost Story, Pete’s Dragon, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Peter Pan & Wendy, The Old Mand & The Gun, and National Board of Review winner The Green Knight.

An Almost Christmas Story is the third and final installment in Cuarón’s holiday shorts collection. His first short, Le Pupille, earned an Oscars nomination in 2022, and last year’s The Shepherd was shortlisted, both of which were live action.

An Almost Christmas Story is produced by Disney Branded Television and Cuarón’s Esperanto Filmoj, in association with Titmouse and Maere Studios; animation services by 88 Pictures. The creative team includes Lowery (director, screenplay and producer), Cuarón (producer and story), Gabriela Rodríguez (producer), Jack Thorne (story and screenplay), Nicholas Ashe Bateman (creative designer) and Daniel Hart (composer).

Trustbridge Ent. and Lilly Wachowski to Produce Queer, Dystopian Pic Based on ‘Hell Followed With Us’

0

Family entertainment production company Trustbridge Entertainment is developing an animated movie based on Andrew Joseph White’s queer debut novel, Hell Followed with Us, with producer Lilly Wachowski (The Matrix, Sense8) and Sarah Marie Flores of Anarchrists United.

Circle Management + Production Founding Partner Lawrence Mattis (Work in Progress), Powerhouse Animation Studios (Castlevania, Masters of the Universe), and producers Daniel Dominguez (Gen: Lock, Seis Manos), Brad Graeber (Castlevania, Blood of Zeus) and Jacob Robinson (Skull Island, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft) of Line Mileage are also producing.  Alvaro Rodriguez (Machete, Seis Manos) and Warren Wagner (The Only Safe Place Left Is The Dark) are the pic’s screenwriters.

Bob Higgins

Hell Followed with Us is such a visceral combination of dystopian fantasy, action, and horror that turning it into an epic anime-inspired feature was a no-brainer,” said Trustbridge Entertainment president Bob Higgins. “The gut-wrenchingly honest personal journey that is truly the heart of this story requires filmmakers with an authentic point of view to translate, and that is exactly what we’ve got with this dream team of producers and writers.”

“Anarchists United and Circle M+P are beyond thrilled to be a part of this amazing team in support of Andrew Joseph White’s harrowing novel,” shared Wachowski, Mattis, and Flores. “‘The book shines a much-needed light on the power of found family and the imperative to protect our LGBTQIA+ siblings in the fight against dogmatic hate.”

Published in 2022 by Peachtree Teen, an imprint of Peachtree Publishing Company, “Hell Followed with Us” is about embracing the monster within and unleashing its power against one’s oppressors. The book tells the story of transgender teen Benji, who flees the fundamentalist cult that unleashed Armageddon, but not before the cult infected him with a bioweapon that will transform him into a rotting beast—and wipe out what’s left of humanity. Benji teams up with a found family of teenagers holed up in an LGBTQ+ youth center for survival.

Featuring transmasculine as well as autism representation, the young adult novel was met with immediate acclaim upon its release. Critics and readers gravitated toward the horror/sci-fi genre bender’s authenticity. White has since published The Spirit Bares Its Teeth (2023) and Compound Fracture (2024).

“From working with queer and neurodivergent artists to tackling the book’s hardest topics with enthusiasm, the production team has such an amazing vision for Hell Followed with Us,” said White, who will consult on development and production. “I can’t wait to bring the book’s rage at a transphobic world to a new audience, right when we need it.”

Weird Market Selects 36 Animated Shorts in Competition & 12 Recruiting Studios

The 16th Weird Market has confirmed the 36 animation short films that will be part of its WFest and the 12 companies participating in the recruitment day. The festival and the session dedicated to promoting employment in the sector are two defining features of this animation, videogame and new media market. The festival will be held at the Filmoteca Valenciana (Rialto Building) in Valencia, Spain, on October 1-3, while the meetings between talent scouts and industry professionals will take place at Las Naves on the morning of Thursday, October 2.

WFest presents a full selection of works that attest to the strength and creativity of the animation industry worldwide. The year, there will be 11 productions in the domestic competition and 25 in the international competition.

In the Spanish section there are works for grown-up audiences alongside others of a more familiar nature, established names and new blood. Creators such as Goya winner Víctor Monigote or the directing duos Carlos F. De Vigo & Lorena Ares (Cafunè), and Omar Al Abdul Razzak & Shira Ukrainitz (The Biological Invasions. The Case of Ovis Orientalis Musimon on the Island of Tenerife: “The Last Mouflon”)  — all of whom have been nominated for the top awards of Spanish cinema — will have their works in competition.

Other filmmakers featured in the official section are Victor Bonafonte (Crimson Harbor), Nacho Arjona a.k.a. “Naolito” (with his directorial debut, Homework) and Valencia’s own Sam Orti (The Fence). This edition will also feature the premiere of the winning short film of the Weird Market Movistar Plus+ Short Project Award 2022: Paradise Buffet by Héctor Zafra and Santi Amézqueta.

The list is completed by works such as Pablo Ballarín’s A Border Guard and His Dog, set on the Belarus-Poland border; Mary Cruz Leo’s adaptation of Fermín Solís’ graphic novel Medea Adrift; Alex Rey’s tribute to animation legend Hayao Miyazaki, Parakeets; and Choche Hurtado, a well-known name at this event returning with Feeling.

The international competition will feature 25 short films from 20 countries, a diverse and representative selection of today’s world animation, with submissions covering all types of themes and techniques, such as 3D, 2D, stop motion and hand-drawing. Productions and co-productions come from Hungary, the United States, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, the Netherlands, France, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, Chile, Portugal, Iran, Finland, Denmark, Canada, Belgium, Iceland, the Czech Republic, Japan and South Korea.

This selection includes works awarded at some of the leading festivals both for animation and film in general: Berlin, Annecy, Clermont-Ferrand, Sundance, Venice, Rotterdam and Cannes. In fact, the latest Palme d’Or-winning animated short film will be shown: 27, by Hungarian filmmaker Flóra Anna Buda.

Two other women are also among the prominent figures: Iran’s Yegane Moghaddam and Nina Gantz from the Netherlands. The former is competing at WFest with her Oscar-nominated short Our Uniform, while the latter has a BAFTA nomination to her credit and will present her latest work, Wander to Wonder.

A mixture of established names and debut filmmakers results in “a selection of the highest quality,” says José Luis Farias, director of Weird Market.

See the full list of selected films here.

Weird Market is a multidisciplinary event and in addition to presentations, conferences, networking spaces, screenings and other activities, its spirit as a catalyst for talent is one of its most characteristic hallmarks. The recruitment day is the best expression of this spirit. This year a total of 12 international studios will be looking to complete their work teams. A sizeable group of headhunters will travel to Valencia to conduct interviews on October 2 with more than a hundred candidates.

The Recruitment Day activities will take place in one of this year’s new venues, Las Naves, and a number of companies have already confirmed attendance, including 3Doubles Producciones, Ánima Kitchent, Hampa Studio, Aupa Studio, TV ON Producciones, Studio Kimchi, Lightbox Animation Studios, Arxlight Pictures, Arx Anima, Alkimia Animation Studio, Pixel-Nexus and Flying Bark Productions.

Takashi Sano Offers Insights on His Anime Take on ‘Rick and Morty’

0

Last month, fans of the long-running series, Rick and Morty, got a special treat when Rick and Morty: The Anime premiered on  Adult Swim’s Toonami Block and Max. Written and directed by Jdirector, storyboard artist and animator Takashi Sano (best known for Tower of God, Lupin the 3rd: Crisis in Toyko). The 10-episode season features the same premise and characters as the popular series, but it offers a Japanese art style and voice cast. It’s an extension of four previous anime-style shorts released years earlier which featured the duo transported to feudal Japan and fighting monsters.

Animag: Thank you so much for taking the time for our questions! Can you tell us when and how you got involved with this clever new take on Rick and Morty?

Takashi Sano and friend (Image: Adult Swim)

Takashi Sano: In 2020, I was approached with an offer to create an anime short for Rick and Morty. The main reason I accepted was because Rick and Morty was such an intriguing show. I had just finished directing a TV series at the time and was eager to work on something shorter in length. That’s how Rick and Morty vs. Genocider came to be. After that, I received another request to make another anime short for Rick and Morty. Since the production of vs. Genocider was such an enjoyable experience, I happily accepted. That one was Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil). Thanks to the recognition of these two anime shorts, I was given the opportunity to create this anime series that consists of 10 episodes. I consider myself pretty lucky, the timing of the first anime short,vs. Genocider, worked out so well that it ultimately let me here today.

Rick and Morty: The Anime

What was it about this show and characters that drew you to the project?

I think the real charm of Rick and Morty lies in its blend of humor and science fiction. The sense of humor in particular is something not often seen in Japanese animation. So I saw it as a unique opportunity to create a story within this world. I was drawn to the idea of producing a story full of American sensibilities from a Japanese perspective, so that’s another reason why I decided to join the project.

When did you start working on it and how long did it take to complete?

We began working on the script in January 2022, and around April of the same year, we started working on the storyboards and animation in parallel with the script. The final episode was completed in March 2024. During that time in 2023, we also produced the opening sequence.

Rick and Morty: The Anime

What would you say was the biggest challenge about bringing this established American show to the anime world?

The fact that we had to create it without altering the setting of the Rick and Morty world. If we simply created a copy of the American version, there would be no point in making it in Japan. So the challenge was to add in new interpretations while making sure the character designs remained consistent but to also create something with a slightly different flavor from the original. This brought out the creative juices in us!

How many people worked on the show with you?

In addition to myself, my main staff includes Kojima san, who was our color designer, Matsuzawa san and Shimizu san, who were the art directors, Noguchi san, who was the director of photography, Kobayashi san, who handled special effects, Kasahara san, who did the editing. In the sound department, there’s Iizuka san the sound director, Furuya san who worked on sound effects, and Hayashi san who did the sound mixing, along with our musical composer, Takahashi san.

In Episode 2, we incorporated 3D animation so we worked with a 3D studio, Souki Productions. For episode 5, Yoda san was our animator and assistant director. From Episode 6 onward, we had the following animation directors join in; Watanabe san, Miyajima san, Takeda san, and Kitagawa san. Additionally, there are all the voice actors and in-between animators and finishers. If you take a look at the end credits, you’ll see that this was created with the efforts of many people. In total, I believe there were close to 100 people involved. Also, there were about eight producers and the production staff just within the Japanese production company side.

Rick and Morty: The Anime

Do you plan to do more episodes in the future?

I have a lot of ideas, so I would love to do more. But maybe would like to change the approach a bit. Although this series has ‘The Anime’ in the title, that doesn’t mean it was intended to be made in a Japanese anime style. The title ‘The Anime’ was added later. Originally we had considered ‘Take Me To The Other Side’ as the subtitle. But in the end, that idea was used for the ending theme song. Next time, it could be interesting to try placing 3D effects and camera work that are popular Japanese anime-style elements. That might be fun to do. Either way, how we approach it would depend on the reception of the series.

Do you have any favorite moments in the show?

I have many moments I love, but I think one of my favorites is the epilogue in episode 2, where Tammy reunites with her family. It’s just a beautiful scene. I also enjoyed the beginning of episode 4, in which you see the suburban streets of Tokyo; the Japanese pubs, cramped apartments, and a packed train. It was interesting to place Rick into everyday life in Japan.

What do you think of the reception to the anime version?

Whether the feedback is positive or negative, I’m very grateful and appreciative of receiving honest opinions. It’s disheartening when there is no response at all. I’ll take in any negative feedback, and use it for making improvements next time. If the viewers understand my intentions for the show and give me good feedback, that will be my strength so then I can refine that further for the next time. The season has just started airing, but the series was created with the idea that all 10 episodes of the season form into one complete story, so I’m looking forward to seeing how people respond after the final episode.

You can currently watch Rick and Morty: The Anime Thursdays at  midnight on Adult Swim and Fridays on Max. The show was created and developed by Takashi Sano and produced by Studio Deen, Sola Entertainment and Telecom Animation Film for Adult Swim.

Wind Sun Sky Announced New Adult Animated Comedy Series ‘Starmageddon’

Wind Sun Sky Entertainment (WSS), known for boundary-pushing animated hits like Invincible (Prime Video) and Psi Cops  (Adult Swim), is teaming up with Emmy-nominated writer Claire Friedman (Saturday Night Live, Desus & Mero, Nick Cannon Show) and writer/director Justin Tyler (The Opposition, Desus & Mero) to deliver a new adult animated comedy series: Starmageddon.

Starmageddon is described as a biting social commentary on the pitfalls of fame and celebrity culture. This 2D, episodic workplace comedy follows Marco and Jordana, two egocentric co-hosts of a daytime gossip show, as they make a Faustian bargain with the Devil to become the number one show on television. Their relentless ambition not only costs them their souls but also ensnares their unsuspecting production crew.

“In a media landscape where fame is more attainable than ever, yet fleeting, Starmageddon taps into the absurdity of our celebrity-obsessed culture,” says Catherine Winder, CEO of Wind Sun Sky Entertainment. “With Claire and Justin at the helm, we truly believe Starmageddon will be one helluva show.”

Tyler and Friedman commented, “Working on Starmageddon has been a dream. Claire and I had a blast creating these hilariously awful, yet relatable characters, who dive headfirst into the hellish culture of celebrity — pitchforks and all. In today’s media environment, where every move is scrutinized and every mistake amplified, Starmageddon feels timely. There is an endless amount of material.”

Trailer: Nickelodeon Embarks on New Animated Quest with ‘Max & the Midknights’

Nickelodeon announced today the all-new CG-animated series Max & the Midknights will make its television debut on Wednesday, October 30 at 7 p.m. (ET/PT). Nickelodeon today released the trailer, key art and voice cast for the original series. Based on the best-selling children’s books by acclaimed author and cartoonist Lincoln Peirce (Big Nate), the show follows an adventurous 10-year-old named Max who embarks on a quest with her newfound friends to save the Kingdom of Byjovia from ominous forces.

The debut episode, “Welcome to Byjovia,” introduces Max, a medieval girl who dreams of becoming a knight and battling dragons but must instead roam the countryside as an apprentice troubadour with her Uncle Budrick. After encountering a thief, Max and Uncle Budrick head to the medieval kingdom of Byjovia but soon discover that the town is nothing like Uncle Budrick remembers.

New episodes of Max & the Midknights will continue to roll out Wednesdays at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon. The show will begin rolling out internationally on Nickelodeon on October 10.

The voice cast behind the Midknights, a group of misfits each with their own unique talent, include: Blu del Barrio (Star Trek: Discovery) as Max, a brave and determined girl ready to take on any challenge headed her way; Melissa Villaseñor (Saturday Night Live) as Millie, a wacky yet super positive girl who brings the power of magic to the Midknights; Zeno Robinson (Transformers: EarthSpark) as Simon, Millie’s street-savvy and sometimes sarcastic companion; and Caleb Yen (Beyblade X) as Kevyn, the bookish genius with a photographic memory. Together, the group accomplishes nearly everything that they set their mind to achieve.

Alongside the Midknights, Jeremy Rowley (iCarly) lends his voice as Uncle Budrick, Max’s lovably silly parental figure and professional troubadour; Gary Anthony Williams (Central Park) voices Mumblin, a famous retired magician who helps guide the Midknights on their quests; Brian Stepanek (The Loud House) voices King Gastley, the nefarious ruler of Byjovia, willing to do whatever it takes to maintain his throne; and India de Beaufort (It’s Pony) voices Fendra, a dark sorceress working for King Gastley.

Throughout the series, Max leads the rest of the Midknights on challenging quests filled with all-new original songs. After King Gastley steals the throne and forces an unjust rule on the Kingdom of Byjovia, Max must come to the rescue to overthrow the power-hungry foe. With her friends and Uncle Budrick by her side, Max’s courageous spirit won’t back down no matter how difficult the quest gets.

Produced by Nickelodeon Animation in Burbank, Max & the Midknights is executive produced by Lincoln Peirce (Big Nate) and Jane Startz (Ella Enchanted). Sharon Flynn (All Hail King Julien) and David Skelly (Toy Story 2) serve as co-executive producers and showrunners. Fleischer Documentary ‘Cartooning America’ Wins Library of Congress Ken Burns Prize

The Library of Congress, The Better Angels Society, Ken Burns, and the Crimson Lion/Lavine Family Foundation today announced the winner of the sixth annual Library of Congress Lavine/Ken Burns Prize for Film: Cartooning America. The director, Asaf Galay, will be awarded a $200,000 cash prize for the multi-part film about the Fleischer Brothers, a family of animators who created innovative techniques that transformed the industry and are still in use today in an evolved form.

Max and Dave Fleischer’s legacy on American animation is profound, having preceded — and inspired — Walt and Roy Disney. Unlike the polished characters produced by the Disney studio, the Fleischer characters came right off the streets of New York City: the subtly Jewish Betty Boop; the muttering, street-smart Popeye; and Superman, the first-ever superhero cartoon. The Fleischers were the first to mix live action with animation, to premiere the first sound cartoon, to pioneer the use of 3D and to create a feature animation based on an original screenplay.

Cartooning America uses visuals including pencil tests, storyboards, drawings, behind-the-scenes home movies and the Fleischer’s very autobiographical cartoons, alongside interviews with family members, historians and the animators they inspired, to tell this family’s dramatic rags to riches to rags again story.

The runner-up Magic & Monsters, directed by Norah Shapiro, will receive a $50,000 cash prize. The film recounts the dark history of the acclaimed Minnesota Children’s Theatre Company, and how a group of former child actors are seeking justice and healing after its founder was convicted of child sexual abuse.

Four finalists (listed below) will each receive a $25,000 cash prize.

The Prize for Film provides critical recognition and resources to exemplary documentary films that tell compelling stories about American history. It was established in 2019 by the Library of Congress and The Better Angels Society, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging Americans with their history through documentary film. This award is bestowed annually by the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden, in partnership with The Better Angels Society. Core underwriting for this prize is provided by a generous gift from Jeannie and Jonathan Lavine through the Crimson Lion/Lavine Family Foundation.

“We’re thrilled to recognize these filmmakers whose work helps to provide us with a sense of place that is often reassuring during extraordinary times like these,” said Ken Burns. “Cartooning America reminds me why I — like the Fleischer brothers — have pursued visual storytelling, and why this medium remains so vital and affecting. We are so grateful to Jeannie and Jonathan Lavine whose generous support, through the Crimson Lion/Lavine Family Foundation, has made this prize possible for the last six years.”

“Animation created some of the most iconic figures in American cinema. I am pleased to recognize, in first place, a documentary that so vividly portrays two early pioneers of the animation industry that has brought us so much laughter and joy,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “Our runner up documentary, in contrast, is an exploration of the search for justice and catharsis by victims of abuse — a reminder that difficult stories are as important for posterity as those we celebrate. I congratulate both of these talented filmmakers on their efforts to bring these very different stories into our national narrative.”

The winner will be awarded on September 17 at a ceremony featuring the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Hayden and Ken Burns, along with congressional speakers to be announced.

On October 10, during Live! at the Library, Katherine Malone-France will appear in conversation with the winning filmmaker Asaf Galay, highlighting the importance of archival footage and the Library of Congress’s collections in making the film.

The CG-animated series is produced by Ireland’s JAM Media and is an original production for BBC Children’s and Education that will debut on CBeebies and BBC iPlayer in spring 2025. Additionally, Ireland’s RTÉ is on-board as a co-producer and Nordic pubcasters DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland) and SVT (Sweden) have prebought the series.

Viewers will follow central characters MeMo and BaBa through the routine of a young child’s day, from playtime and mealtime to bathtime and bedtime, as they encounter a host of fantastical beings that encourage good nutrition, mindfulness and creativity, winding down towards sleep.

CAKE Takes ‘Luce in the Lovely Land’ around the World

La Cabane and Thuristar have announced a partnership with kids’ entertainment specialist CAKE for the international distribution of the 2D animated series Luce in the Lovely Land. The 39 x 7′ preschool show is written and directed by Britt Raes, based on her multi-award-winning animated short Luce and the Rock. Delivery is expected in 2026.

“I’ve worked with CAKE for a long time and I know this unique and beautiful series will be in very good hands. Luce and the Rock’s adventures are all about opening up to others and looking at different perspectives, and this strong distribution team will open them up to the world!” says Perrine Gauthier, co-founder of La Cabane, partner at Thuristar and producer of the series.

The series centers on Luce, a curious and daring six-year-old, who every morning opens her little bedroom window to see what’s happening in the Lovely Land. Every day is a new adventure which Luce shares with her best friend, a giant Rock! Together, they explore the unexpected, meet surprising creatures and discover other points of view. In a universe brimming with visual and narrative creativity, Luce gives a different outlook on the world.

The project is developed in partnership with France Télévisions (France) and VRT-Ketnet (Belgium), and with support from the MEDIA Creative Europe Programme, deAuteurs and the 2024 Hiroshima Artist in Residence. The project received an enthusiastic response at Cartoon Forum 2023, where it ranked first in attendance among European co-productions.
