‘Rick and Morty: The Anime’ Drops Official Trailer & Premiere Date Out of the Wormhole

The Rick and Morty universe expands with the debut of an all-new Rick and Morty: The Anime series from director Takashi Sano (Tower of God), who previously created the viral hit anime shorts. Following Rick, Morty and the rest of the Smith family in a new intergalactic adventure, the English-language version is set to premiere Thursday, August 15 at midnight on Adult Swim, with the subtitled version in Japanese to follow on August 17 at midnight on Adult Swim’s action/anime programming block, Toonami.

In celebration of this new dimension of madness, Adult Swim’s Rickmobile and Mortymobile will hit the road for a multi-city ANIME-rican tour across the nation, giving fans the chance to watch the first episode before it premieres, and to score exclusive merchandise and photo ops. As previously announced, the cross-country fun kicks off at San Diego Comic-Con, with more cities to follow and ending in Adult Swim’s hometown of Atlanta, GA. All dates and locations can be found at rickmobile.com.

“Takashi Sano, in addition to being a super-talented director, is also a huge Rick and Morty fan,” said Michael Ouweleen, President, Adult Swim. “He’s the perfect person to give us all this alternate version of this amazing show. And the perfect way to launch this series is by doing our favorite thing — drive ridiculous vehicles around and come see all of you in person. Keep an eye out for our Rickmobile and Mortymobile as they cruise across the country and wrack up various toll tickets to celebrate the expansion of the Rick and Morty universe.”

In the new, 10-episode anime series from the world of Rick and Morty, Rick relaxes in a pseudo-world between multiverses, Summer helps Space Beth fight the evil Galactic Federation, and Morty falls in love with a mysterious girl who happens to be an atemporal being.

The Japanese and English voice actors, respectively, for Rick and Morty: The Anime include:

  • Rick – Youhei Tadano / Joe Daniels
  • Morty – Keisuke Chiba / Gabriel Regojo
  • Summer – Akiha Matsui / Donna Bella Litton
  • Jerry – Manabu Muraji / Joe Daniels
  • Beth – Takako Fuji / Patricia Duran

New episodes of Rick and Morty: The Anime will be available to stream on Max and purchase on Digital the day after their Adult Swim debut. Japanese encore airings of new episodes will debut the following Saturday at midnight on Adult Swim’s Toonami block.

The series is written and directed by Sano and is produced for Adult Swim by Sola Entertainment, with Jason Demarco (Head of Action and Anime, Adult Swim) and Joseph Chou (CEO, Sola Ent.) serving as executive producers.

“Lost” Animated Movie ‘Ultraman: The Adventure Begins’ to Screen at G-Fest

Tsuburaya Productions announced that Japan’s most iconic superhero, Ultraman, is making his way to G-Fest 2024 (g-festcon.com), America’s premiere kaiju-focused fan convention, with a one-of-a-kind screening, a must-see panel and a new book series announcement. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Chicago from July 12-14.

Ultraman: The Adventure Begins

Fresh off the debut of the new Netflix animated series Ultraman: Rising, fans will not want to miss the historic screening of Ultraman: The Adventure Begins, also known as Ultraman USA, a “lost” feature-length animated movie produced by Hanna-Barbera and Tsuburaya Productions in 1987, that has not been seen in 30 years.

Screening Saturday, July 13 at 10 a.m., Ultraman: Th Adventure Begins is canonical to the Ultraman Universe and features the first appearance of the Ultra Force: Ultraman Scott, Ultraman Chuck and Ultrawoman Beth. In recent years, all three Ultra Heroes have made appearances in live-action series. This advance screening will be the only chance fans will get to preview this archival treasure before its release on DVD and Blu-ray in 2025, in partnership with Mill Creek Entertainment.

Tsuburaya Fields Media & Pictures Entertainment and Sky Turtle Nova, an imprint of Oasis Family Media, are announcing Ultraman: Ultra Academy, the first American book series based on the franchise, and will preview the six-book series at G-Fest this year during the “Ultraman in America” panel on Friday, July 12 at 10 a.m.

Ultraman: Ultra AcademyThe series of middle-grade novels features a team of six young students learning the lessons of courage, hope, kindness and creativity demonstrated within the Ultraman universe. Ultraman: Ultra Academy novels follow the students as they study giant kaiju and try to help the Special Science Search Party (SSSP) and Ultraman find weaknesses in the beasts. The young team will draw inspiration from the earthly problems that are giving rise to the monsters and from Ultraman himself as he attempts to restore balance to the world. Set to hit retail wherever books are sold beginning Spring 2025.

“As the Ultraman community continues to grow, we are eager to further connect with both new and legacy fans this year at G-Fest, bringing them a treasured screening of Ultraman: The Adventure Begins, and insight into the future of the Ultraman brand through Ultraman: Ultra Academy,” said Danny Simon, President of Tsuburaya Fields Media & Pictures Entertainment.

Jeff Gomez, Starlight Runner’s Transmedia Producer for the Ultraman franchise, added, “Ultraman: Ultra Academy will be an expansion of the Ultraman canon fully authorized by Tsuburaya Productions. I can’t think of a better way to announce this project than at G-Fest and with this exclusive screening of Ultraman: The Adventure Begins — a true gift for fans.”

The Ultraman universe first debuted in 1966 in the television series Ultra Q, and over the last 58-plus years, the franchise has spawned a record number of television series, films, video games and more.  The presence of Ultraman at G-Fest 2024 comes at a time of major growth and increased brand awareness of the Ultraman franchise, sparked by the premiere Ultraman: Rising on Netflix in June, which has become a fan-favorite and critical darling.

‘Jim Henson’s The Storyteller’ Gets Complete Collection Release with Shout!

Another enchanting corner of Jim Henson’s creative empire will be made available to fans next month with The Storyteller: The Complete Collection, arriving on Digital Download on August 6 from Shout! Studios, in collaboration with The Jim Henson Company.

This definitive digital release boasts digitally restored and remastered presentations of Jim Henson’s The Storyteller and The Storyteller: Greek Myths, available for purchase across major digital entertainment platforms around the world.

Jim Henson created The Storyteller — an anthology series for television — in 1987, based on a treatment written by his eldest daughter, Lisa Henson (now CEO of The Jim Henson Company), inspired by her university studies in folklore and mythology. Oscar-winner Anthony Minghella (The English Patient, Cold Mountain) wrote all the episodes, and the series won both Emmy and BAFTA awards.

The Storyteller features acclaimed actors as well as original creatures and characters from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop in this retelling of classic folk tales, fables and legends with a sophisticated and authentic approach. The series stars John Hurt in the title role. Aided by his cynical dog (performed by Jim Henson’s son and the series’ head puppeteer, Brian Henson, Chairman of The Jim Henson Company), The Storyteller, sitting by the fire, narrates fascinating tales that combine humor, intrigue and magic. Other recognizable talent appearing includes Miranda Richardson, Sean Bean, Brenda Blethyn, Gabrielle Anwar, Jennifer Saunders, Jane Horrocks and Jonathan Pryce.

The follow-up series The Storyteller: Greek Myths expands on the concept of awe-inspiring tales by travelling back to the classical age: In 800 B.C., the poet Homer wrote down the stories of the great heroes of Ancient Greece, such as Orpheus and Eurydice, Daedalus and Icarus, Perseus and the Gorgon, and Theseus and the Minotaur. Starring Michael Gambon in the title role, this spin-off series features a new storyteller who finds himself trapped with his dog in the ruins of the ancient Labyrinth of Knossos. As shafts of light beam through fallen masonry, illuminating faded murals and broken statues, the heroic deeds of the Ancient Greeks unfold.

The Storyteller: Complete Collection will be available to purchase digitally from Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, YouTube, Microsoft Store and other digital platforms.

OIAF Announces 69 Animated Shorts in Competition

The 2024 Ottawa International Animation Festival once again highlights animation as a medium of mature and comedic themes with the announcement of its Commissioned, Narrative, Non-Narrative, Student and Canadian Student competitions. The OIAF returns to Canada’s capital from September 25-29.

The Festival received a total of 2,308 entries for this year’s edition, representing 93 countries. Sixty-nine submissions were selected for the Animated Shorts Competition, including the Canadian Student category and the previously announced Young Audiences 7+ and Teen Audiences 13+ competitions. The Commissioned, Narrative, Non-Narrative and Student categories will be judged during the Festival by the OIAF Shorts Jury, formed by Jonathan Djob Nkondo (France/U.K.), Anastasiya Verlinska (Ukraine) and Ivana Volda (Croatia). Winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on September 28 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.

“Given the state of the world, it’s no surprise that many of the short films selected for competition are considering the present, the future, and what that means for us as a society,” says OIAF Artistic Director Chris Robinson. “But, we’ve also selected an assortment of lighter and comedic works about male balding, Woody and Buzz in conflict, and a basketball-playing dog having an existential crisis. This crop of films reminds us that animation is not just the domain of children and fluffy entertainment; it continues to be a potent piece of personal and poetic expression.”

Sherman (Academy Award winner for Mary Poppins).

Featured in Deja’s directorial debut short, Mushka, as the end credit song, sung by Holly Sedillos, the song is part of the film’s poignant orchestral score created and arranged by Fabrizio Mancinelli.

The new “Mushka’s Lullaby” music video, created by the film’s editor and co-producer, Roger Viloria, presents the tune accompanied by film clips from Deja’s hand-drawn short, combined with fun and nostalgic behind-the-scenes clips of recording the song, featuring Sedillos, and the orchestra who recorded the award-winning Mushka soundtrack on the Synchron Stage in Vienna, with a 60-piece orchestra.

“I’m thrilled to showcase the beautiful ‘Mushka’s Lullaby’ song with a celebration of the legacy of one of the world’s greatest songwriters, my friend Richard M. Sherman,” said Deja. “I’m beyond grateful to our amazing team on Mushka. We’re all so lucky to have had Richard contribute ‘Mushka’s Lullaby’ to our film.”

A 30-year veteran of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Deja has brought to life beloved character including Scar in The Lion King, Gaston in Beauty and The Beast, Jafar in Aladdin and Lilo in Lilo and Stitch. Animated and crafted by hand over a period of 10 years, the 28-minute short Mushka is Deja’s directorial debut.  Since its world premiere at The San Francisco International Film Festival and European premiere at the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film in 2023, the film has screened around the world, winning multiple awards, including Best Animation at the San Jose International Short Film Festival and the Kids Choice Award/Best Animation award at Palm Springs International Short Fest.

Mushka is the story of Sarah, a young Ukrainian girl who discovers an orphaned baby Siberian tiger and realizes she must either raise him or leave him to the perils of the snowy wild. Featuring new characters full of personality in a story brimming with excitement, humor and emotion, it is the culmination of nearly a decade of dedication, experimentation and creativity.

“Mushka’s Lullaby” is included on the film’s soundtrack album, Mushka—Original Score, available digitally from Lakeshore Records.

‘Shrek 5’ Officially Dated for July 1, 2026 with Core Cast Returning

Contrary to what somebody once told us about a 2025 release, DreamWorks Animation today took social channels to reveal that Shrek 5 will bring the Far Far Away gang back to the big screen on July 1, 2026. Universal Pictures is releasing.

Fans also got official word that, in addition to beans-spiller Eddie Murphy returning as Donkey, voice stars Mike Myers (Shrek) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) are returning to their lead roles. It’s not yet announced whether Antonio Banderas will return as Puss in Boots for this chapter.

The fifth movie will be directed by Walt Dohrn (Trolls trilogy), who was a writer and artist for Shrek 2 (2004) and Shrek the Third (2007) and head of story on Shrek Forever After (2010) — as well as the voice of Rumpelstiltskin. Brad Ableson (Minions: The Rise of Gru) is co-director, and Shrek and Trolls franchise alum Gina Shay is producing alongside Universal’s animation lead Chris Meledandri (founder of Illumination).

The brief announcement video, featuring an ogre-eared, animated “5,” pays homage to the eternally memorable film series by bringing back Smash Mouth anthem “All Star” as its backing track.

Based on the children’s book by William Steig, Shrek debuted in 2001 and became the first-ever winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature (and the first animated movie nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay). That last entry in the CGI film franchise arrived 14 years ago. The Shrek movies have totted up $2.997 billion for the core titles ($4.04B including the more recent Puss in Boots films).

Unlikely Animal Friends Peggy & Molly Get Animated Series from Xentrix

Australian talent agency Bella Management announces a strategic partnership with Xentrix Studios Australia to develop a new animated television series, Peggy and Molly. The show will be inspired by the real-life, heartwarming and unlikely friendship between Peggy, a spirited Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Molly, a clever and adventurous magpie.

The animated series is set in a picturesque suburban neighborhood where Peggy, a lovable Staffy, and Molly, a curious magpie, form an unexpected bond. Their daily adventures will emphasize the importance of friendship, understanding, cooperation, teamwork and finding magic in everyday moments. Each episode will present engaging storylines that impart valuable life lessons, promoting positive values and inclusivity.

With this partnership, Bella Management and Xentrix aim to “push the boundaries of traditional animation,” creating a vibrant, immersive world for their interspecies BFFS with state-of-the-art animation technology.

“We are thrilled to collaborate with Xentrix Studios Australia on Peggy and Molly. Xentrix has worked with all the major media houses such as Warner Bros., Disney, Paramount, Marvel and Nickelodeon on projects that include Ice Age, Angry Birds, Spiderman, Batman, Monster High and The LEGO Movie,” said Chelsea Bonner, CEO of Bella Management. “This series captures the essence of adventure and the power of friendship, values that are close to our hearts. We believe this charming duo will resonate with viewers worldwide and leave a lasting impact.”

Xentrix Studios Australia’s Creative Director, Ken Cantrill, added, “Working on Peggy and Molly is a fantastic opportunity for us. The characters are endearing, and the story speaks for itself. Anyone following the journey of Peggy and Molly will fully appreciate that this story is perfect for an animated TV series. We are committed to creating an animated series that is not only entertaining but also visually stunning and has solid educational messages. We can’t wait to introduce Peggy and Molly’s world to audiences everywhere.”

The producing partners intend for Peggy and Molly to be available on multiple platforms and in an array of languages, both dubbed and subtitled. Another goal for the series is to partner with a wildlife charity.

Peggy and Molly’s curious bond began four years ago, when Peggy’s owner Juliette Wells found a seemingly abandoned chick at their local dog park. Wells and her partner Reece Mortensen nurtured the baby magpie to adulthood, and tried to encourage it to return to the wild. But the bird became enmeshed with the family.

After years of social media stardom, in early 2024 Molly was made to be surrendered to the Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation, which said in a statement “Animals from the wild, must stay wild.” However, DESI admitted it would be impossible to release Molly due to her domestication, and the bird may instead spend the rest of her 30-year lifespan in a facility. Fans of the animal influencers who signed a 155,000-person petition — and even Queensland Premier Steven Miles — demanded the family be reunited, and DESI returned Molly to Wells and Mortensen six weeks later.

Duolingo Acquires Second Animation Studio: Hobbes

Leading mobile learning platform Duolingo announced today the acquisition of Hobbes, an animation and motion design studio based in Detroit. This acquisition marks the inception of a dedicated motion design team within Duolingo’s Design department.

This is Duolingo’s second acquisition, following Gunner in 2022 — another Detroit-based design and animation studio that is affiliated with Hobbes. Duolingo explains it uses animation and motion design to amplify game mechanics and make its products more fun and engaging.

“Design is a critical part of Duolingo’s success, particularly our use of character illustration and animation, which really accelerated since adding Gunner to our team. Now we’ll be able to accelerate our use of motion-design by adding Hobbes’ unique talents to our Design team,” said Ryan Sims, Chief Design Officer, Duolingo. “We’re investing in the belief that a more animated product experience is more fun and delightful, and leads to better learning outcomes.”

The acquisition of Hobbes will add 12 motion designers, animators, creative strategists, creative directors and producers to Duolingo’s existing design teams and nearly double the size of the app’s Detroit office. Hobbes is already a motion design partner for Duolingo, supporting the development of key features for Duolingo Music, product architecture, animation design systems and more.

“We strive to put animators in the driver’s seat for product design, and Duolingo’s expertise and dedication to art, design, and continuous improvement align perfectly with our mission,” said Eddy Nieto, Partner and Creative Director, Hobbes.

Nevin McRay, Managing Partner at Hobbes, added, “This is a huge win for everyone on our team and we’re excited to grow our community of top talent here in Detroit.”

Lighthouse Ups Marc Jordan to CFO, Inks Deal with Gao Shan for ‘Showtime’

Irish animation producer Lighthouse Studios (The Bob’s Burgers Movie, The Cuphead Show, El Deafo, Little Ellen) has promoted finance director Marc Jordan to the newly created position of Chief Financial Officer. Jordan will help shape the company’s financial strategy and operations, including the financial management of co-productions.

The first such co-pro is a new children’s animated adventure series, Showtime (previously known as Stage Struck). Award-winning French studio Gao Shan Pictures is joining the original project as co-production partner, alongside previously announced partner Dog Ears in Northern Ireland. The announcement was made today by Claire Finn, Managing Director, Lighthouse Studios.

As CFO and part of Lighthouse Studios’ executive team, Jordan will develop and implement the company’s financial strategy and will oversee all financial aspects of co-productions; identifying and securing funding opportunities for co-productions and other projects; and collaborating with production partners. He joined Lighthouse Studios as Financial Controller when the company was founded in 2017, and for the past four years, he has served as its Finance Director. Jordan began his career in practice, gaining considerable experience working with clients across a broad range of industries. He currently serves as a Board Member of Animation Ireland.

“Marc has been a pivotal member of our team during his tenure at the studio,” commented Finn. “His promotion to CFO is well-deserved, and he will be instrumental in collaborating with our esteemed production partners to continue delivering the first-class animation we have been known for since our inception.”

“The past seven years have provided a tremendous opportunity to work with Claire and the team to grow from primarily an animation service provider to expanding into original content, and I am delighted to continue the journey to help further build Lighthouse Studios into a world class animation studio,” added Jordan. “We are also excited to welcome Gao Shan as a co-production partner to work alongside us and Dog Ears on Showtime, a series that celebrates inclusion and kindness, the magic ingredients that help every child to shine, and will encourage kids to get excited about being part of a performance — whatever part they choose.”

Launched in 2017 as a service studio, Lighthouse Studios has produced a prestigious slate of animated content. The company is also moving into original content production, and over the last year has been in development on three projects, one of which is Showtime, based on Tor Freeman’s book Showtime for Billie and Coco. Gao Shan Pictures will co-produce the 52 x 11’ series alongside Lighthouse Studios and Dog Ears. Lighthouse Studios’ award-winning Head Creative Gilly Fogg (El Deafo, Bug Diaries) will direct from scripts written by Sian Ní Mhuirí (Royals Next Door). Finn serves as executive producer; Dog Ears’ Creative Director John McDaid is co-producer; and Gao Shan’s CEO Arnauld Boulard.

Showtime is described as a high-energy comedy series set in a performing arts school. Naturally diverse and inclusive, each 11-minute episode features visual humor for young audiences, character led stories grounded in friendship, and performances galore, as the characters learn about everything from puppetry to ballet, mime, acrobatics, street-dancing, juggling and more!

The Okee Dokee Bros.’ ‘Brambletown’ Animated Special Debuts on PBS KIDS This Month

In partnership with PBS Kids, Grammy Award winners The Okee Dokee Brothers this month present Brambletown, an animated musical film based on their 2023 album of the same name. The story follows old friends Fox and Badger, and spotlights lessons in friendship, growth and community. The special premieres July 26.

About the film:

Brambletown explores connection and belonging — within ourselves, with each other, and with nature. The film tells the story of Fox and Badger: two lifelong friends who return to their childhood home of Brambletown, only to find that things have changed. As they grow apart, experience new hurts and navigate major disruption to their forest community, Fox and Badger learn that even in the darkest moments, they still have the power to heal.

Brambletown offers the core message that taking care of ourselves and our relationships is part of taking care of the world. Through its music and story, the film provides children and grown-ups a safe on-ramp for talking (and singing) about some of life’s toughest challenges with hope, honesty and optimism. Themes and universal messages in the film include environmental concerns, interconnection and plant and animal wisdom. Brambletown provides an honest look at life’s challenges through lightheartedness and optimism and aims to inspire a sense of gratefulness, humility, wonder and respect for the life forces that connect all things.

The 35-minute musical film was animated by Eric Power (The Storyteller, Path of Blood) in stop-motion, utilizing his hand-made, construction paper cut-out technique. The Okee Dokee Brothers’ (Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing) music draws heavily from the sounds and instrumentation of traditional folk songs; blends of banjo, trombone, harmonica, cello, pedal steel, accordion and more.
