In a newly released short Souls, the transparent figures of normal civilians and the objects of everyday life are overlaid on scenes of violent destruction, before being swept away like dust on the wind. These images make up an animated tribute to the innocents who have been killed in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, produced by Ukrainian animation collective Volunteer Video.
The short was shared late Thursday night by the official nation of Ukraine Instagram account, with the message: “Those who are alive will always remember those who are not.”
Volunteer Video is made up of animators volunteering their talents towards “creative resistance” to spread information about Ukraine. Their videos also include a first-hand story of a young girl caught up in the February 24 invasion, an allegorical “fairy tale” about toxic neighbors and a collection of messages from AI animated figures from Ukrainian history.
