Cartoon Network in the U.S. has acquired the computer-animated feature BIONICLE: Mask of Light from Create TV & Film Ltd., the production arm of toymaker LEGO. The 70-minute action-adventure flick will premiere on Saturday, April 17, to kick off the new Saturday night slot for Cartoon Networks Toonami action-animé block.
Based on the popular toy brand for boys, the feature takes place on the primitive island of Mata Nui, where good and evil biomechanical beings struggle for dominance. With the guidance of the mysterious Mask of Light, a young hero and his brave companion must overcome powerful forces and dangerous obstacles in their struggle to save their world and fulfill ancient prophecies.
BIONICLE: Mask of Light was produced by Creative Capers for Create TV and Film Ltd on behalf of the LEGO Company. The movie was one of the top 10 DVD premiere titles of 2003. In addition to sales success, the film received five DVD Exclusive Award nominations, winning Best Visual Effects.
Create TV & Film is producing BIONICLE 2: Legends of Metru Nui with Miramax on behalf of the LEGO Co. The film will premiere on home video and will be distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment later this year. An animated theatrical feature is also in the works from Miramax.
