DHX Media has inked a deal with Sony Pictures Animation to take its blockbuster CG feature franchise Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to the small screen with an all new television adaptation. DHX will develop and produce the 26 x 22 show, which will be created using traditional animation. The deal also includes global TV and non-U.S. home entertainment exploitation rights (Sony will handle U.S. home entertainment), and will see DHX representing merchandising for the series worldwide.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: The Series is set before the super-sized food storm transformed the island town of Swallow Falls, and will center on a tweenage Flint Lockwood. While the blue-collar town turns on a sardine-based economy, Flint dreams of being a serious scientist and maybe, one day, not having his inventions blow up in his face. Along for the ride is new girl in town Sam Sparks, a wannabe ace reporter, as well as other reinvented film characters: Flint’s dad Tim, Steve the Monkey, high school AV head Manny, gym teacher Earl, overgrown child model Brent and Mayor Shelbourne.
