Canada’s Nelvana Enterprises is putting the spotlight on its animated comedies at the MIPTV market next week. Three new toon series Sidekick, Spliced and Scaredy Squirrel will be joined by live-action sitcom Mr. Young.
Sidekick follows Eric and Trevor on their not-so-heroic adventures training to be superhero sidekicks. With access to a mansion stocked with high-tech gadgets, they get their fair share of bad guy battling action, but are still waiting for their super powers to kick in. Recently greenlit for a second season, the 80 x 11 series targets kids 6-11 and has already debuted on Canada’s YTV, with launches on Canal J (France) and K2 (Italy) set for this year.
Spliced takes place on aptly named Keep Away Island, home to a bizarre community of mutants including best friends Peri (short for failed ex-peri-ment #13) and Entrée (a buffet style combo of chicken, cow, pig and shrimp). Clueless abou the outside world, these odd inhabitants do their best to get along. Series is 52 x 11, target audience 6-11, currently broadcast by Teletoon (Canada) and ABC Australia.
Scaredy Squirrel stars a creative, loveable rodent hero as he tackles everyday challenges—the everyday being quite challenging for the slightly nutty squirrel, who makes no apologies for his quirks. 52 x 11 for kids 6-11; broadcasters include YTV (Canada).
Mr. Young is a live-action comedy starring a teen prodigy who lands a job as a high school science teacher, teaching kids his own age—including the girl of his dreams and the class bully. Created by Dan Signer (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody). Produced by Thunderbird Films in association with YTV for kids 8-12; 26 x half-hour package. Broadcasts on YTV in Canada.
