The 50th Annies: ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’ and ‘Marcel the Shell’ Are Among Top Winners

Netflix’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio and A24’s Marcel the Shell with Shoes On were the winners of the Best Feature and Best Indie Feature Awards at the 50th Annie Awards on Saturday. Apple TV+/Bad Robot’s The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse received the Best Special Production prize, while Portuguese director João Gonzalez’s Ice Merchants was the winner of the Best Short Subject Annie.

The Annies for Best Direction (Features) were awarded to Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, while the prize for Best Direction (TV/Media) was received by Peter Baynton and Charlie Mackesy for The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. 

[Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was the winner of the Best Animated Feature prize at the Producers Guild Awards, which was held on the same night. Del Toro had to do double duty, picking up his PGA prize at the Beverly Hilton first and then rushing to Annies Award ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall later that same night.]

On the TV/streaming side, Disney/Imagine Ent.’ The Tiny Chef Show, DreamWorks’ Abominable and the Invisible City and FOX/Bento Box’s Bob’s Burger received the Annies for Best Preschool, Children and Mature TV/Media. Netflix/Tonko House’s acclaimed ONI: Thunder God’s Tale took home the Best TV/Media Limited Series prize.

Overall, the biggest multiple award winners were Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (5 Annies), The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (4 Annies), Love, Death + Robots (4 Annies) and Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (3 Annies). Netflix dominated the night with an impressive overall win of 12 Annies, while Apple TV+, DreamWorks Animation received four trophies each.
