Netflix Announces ‘Big Mouth’ Will Wrap with Record Eighth Season

Netflix today announced a greenlight for the eighth and final season of Big Mouth. The two upcoming seasons, which launch in 2023 and 2024, will make the adult-targeted coming-of-age comedy the longest running series in Netflix history, outside of Kids & Family programming.

“If you would have told adolescent Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg that middle school would take eight years to finish, they would have been like, ‘Yeah, that sounds about right. This seems like it will never end,’” quipped Nick Kroll, series star and executive producer.

Big Mouth is a towering achievement in animated comedy that will make Netflix history for its longevity,” said Billy Wee, Netflix Director of Adult Animation. “We are thrilled that we still have two more hilarious seasons to share with fans before this brilliant coming of age story reaches its conclusion.”

Synopsis: Big Mouth is a critically-acclaimed and Emmy-winning adult animated comedy about the glorious nightmare that is puberty. Inspired by Kroll and Goldberg’s childhood, it follows a group of friends and their hormone monsters as they navigate adolescence, human sexuality and coming of age.

Season 6 launched October 28, 2022, while seasons 7 and 8 will launch in 2023 and 2024.

The spinoff series Human Resources will also come to a conclusion at the end of Season 2, which launches in the coming months. However, the characters and stories from Human Resources will flow into the final seasons of Big Mouth.

Netflix recently renewed its overall content deal with Brutus Pink, the animation production company from Kroll, Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett, the creative team behind Big Mouth and Human Resources. As part of the deal, which was announced in July, Brutus Pink will continue to write and produce new animated projects for Netflix members worldwide.

By the Numbers:

  • 1 Billion+ Hours: Members have spent watching Big Mouth and Human Resources on Netflix.

  • 8: Seasons of Big Mouth, the most for a Netflix scripted series ever.

Big Mouth premiered in September of 2017, and by the time it wraps with Season 8 it will have officially surpassed hit Netflix original live-action series including The Crown (due to launch its sixth and final season this year), Virgin River (renewed for S4 & S5) and Stranger Things (renewed for fifth & final season, with an animated spinoff in development) as well as primetime animation hits like Matt Groening’s Disenchantment (renewed for S5) and anthology series Love, Death + Robots (renewed for S4).

Currently, the only series with more seasons than Big Mouth is the DreamWorks kids & family fave Gabby’s Dollhouse, which has rapidly rolled out seven (51 episodes) since premiering on the streamer in 2021.
