Filmmaker Zack Snyder intends to get back in the animation game, over a decade since he directed the CG fantasy-adventure Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. In an interview in the most recent issue of Total Film, the director of 300, Watchmen and Justice League revealed plans to build out the world of his two-part sci-fi epic Rebel Moon:
“I’m the gatekeeper for what’s possible. I’m the only one who knows where the whole story is going, and I do have it mapped all the way,” he told the magazine. “We’re doing a narrative podcast, and an animated comic book, and an animated series. They all take place before the events of the movie. So you can start to understand the vastness of the mythology that we’ve been working on.”
Rebel Moon co-writer Kurt Johnstad noted that the history and lore of the story-world is “very detailed and fleshed out” with hundreds of pages of material and a timeline (charted on a 12-foot whiteboard in the writers’ room) that “goes back 800 years” from the Netflix movies.
Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire will arrive on Netflix on December 22, followed by Part Two – The Scargiver on April 19, 2024. The first film’s synopsis, from Netflix:
