70th Emmy Awards Nominations: Cartoon Network Dominates Toon Contenders

Nominations for the 70th Annual Emmy Awards were announced Thursday morning, with a few top categories presented live by Emmy nominated actress Samira Wiley (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Ryan Eggold (New Amsterdam), along with Television Academy Chairman & CEO Hayma Washington and President  & COO Maury McIntyre at the Television Academy’s Wolf Theatre at the Saban Media Center in North Hollywood.

“It’s been another record-breaking year with more than 9,100 entries in 122 unique categories for the initial nomination round of voting,” said Washington. “The continued growth of the industry has provided opportunities for acclaimed new programs to emerge, while allowing last season’s breakthrough programs to thrive. In addition, 36 performers — ranging from new discoveries to revered international stars — have received their first-ever acting Emmy nomination across all categories of scripted programming. We are honored to recognize both television’s seasoned veterans and rising talents. This year’s nominations continue to represent increased diversity and inclusion in front of the camera. And, there is a wealth of new and returning programs that reflect so many of today’s critical issues.”

Overall, Game of Thrones scored the most series nods with 22, followed by SNL and Westworld (tied at 21) and The Handmaid’s Tale (20) — including a guest actress nomination for presenter Wiley. Netflix was the network with the most nominations in total with 112, pulling it ahead of last year’s No. 1, HBO (108 this year), followed by NBC (78) and FX Networks (50). In the toon battle, Turner channels Cartoon Network (4) and Adult Swim (2) combined had the most nods, followed by Disney XD and FOX. Also notable: Seth MacFarlane has again managed a double nomination for his voice performances on his series American Dad! and Family Guy.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be held September 8 and 9; and the Emmy Awards ceremony will take place at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles on September 17, broadcast live on NBC. Emmy-nominated co-head Saturday Night Live writers and “Weekend Update” anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che are hosting; SNL creator/exec producer Lorne Michaels is producing the telecast.
