‘We the People’ Wins NAACP Award for Best Animated Show

Netflix’s animated civics-lesson themed series We The People won the NAACP Image Award for Best Animated Series last night. The NAACP Image Awards organization is revealing several winners every night this week in the lead-up to Saturday’s main show, which will air live on BET.

Produced by veteran animation icon Chris Nee (Doc McStuffins, Vampirina) , Michelle and Barack Obama and Kenya Barris, the series used a variety of animation styles and directors and original songs performed by the likes of Janelle Monae,  Lin-Manuel Miranda, Adam Lambert, H.E.R. and Brandi Carlile to reframe understanding of what government and citizenships mean in our modern world.  The show tapped a wide range of top notch directors including Benjy Brooke, Everet Downing Jr., Trisha Gum, Jorge R. Gutierrez, Daron Nefcy, Peter Ramsey and Tim Rauch to direct each of the episodes of the anthology.  Top animation houses Titmouse and BUCK helped produce the animation for the show. We the People has also been nominated for two Annie Awards (Best Animated TV Media Production for Children, Best Character Animation for a TV Production).
