Fox Animation Adapting ‘Nimona’ with Patrick Osborne

Fox Animation has nabbed the rights to Noelle Stevenson’s New York Times best-selling graphic novel Nimona. The adaptation is set to be directed by Patrick Osborne, who won the Best Animated Short Oscar for Feast. Marc Haimes — screenplay writer for LAIKA’s upcoming Kubo and the Two Strings— is attached to write the pic, currently in development.

Nimona is an action-packed blend of fantasy and sci-fi, set in a medieval-inspired future where knights hang out at night clubs and wield broadswords while zipping around on hoverboards. The adventure centers on a young shape-shifter who partners with a disgraced knight in over to reclaim his honor and overthrow a corrupt regime.

Stevenson wrote and illustrated the story as a webcomic while studying at Maryland Institute College of Art, and earned Harvey and Eisner Awards for Nimona, as well as Slate’s Cartoonist Studio Prize for best webcomic in 2012.

Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and president of production Adam Stone are producing, and Vertigo partner John Powers Middleton will exec produce while creative exec Gabriel Chu will oversee the project for the company. Vanessa Morrison and Darlene Caamano Loquet will oversee for Fox.
