‘Mary and the Witch’s Flower’ Gets Magical US Trailer

GKIDS has unveiled the official US trailer for Studio Ponoc’s feature film debut, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, which is coming to the select stateside theaters January 19. While the new spot shares a lot with the previously released UK trailer, we now get a glimpse at more of Mary’s high-flying feats and get a sense of the girl’s heroic journey from hot-tempered human to a fierce and determined hero.

The film follows Mary (voiced by Ruby Barnhill), a plain young girl stuck in a rural British village with her Great-Aunt Charlotte, with seemingly no adventures or friends in sight. A chance encounter with two mysterious cats leads her into the forest, where she finds an old broom and the strange glowing fly-by-night flower — a rare plant with special properties. The broomstick whisks Mary over the clouds to the Endor College for witches, where she discovers her destiny with the help of headmistress Madame Mumblechook (Kate Winslet) and bumbling Doctor Dee (Jim Broadbent) — but these welcoming characters are not all that they appear.

Adapted from Mary Stewart’s 1971 novel The Little Broomstick, Mary and the Witch’s Flower is directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi (When Marnie Was There) and produced by Studio Ponoc founder Yoshiaki Nishimura (The Tale of the Princess Kaguya).

Ahead of the release, Fathom Events is presenting a special premiere event on Jan. 18.
