Amid some release calendar shuffling, Sony Pictures Animation feature Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part I has been shifted to June 2, 2023. The sequel to SPA’s Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Annie Award-winning breakout Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) was previously slated for October 7.
The second installment will follow Marvel hero Miles Morales/Spider-Man (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld) on an adventure across the multiverse, meeting a new roster of interdimensional Spider-People (including Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099 and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman) and facing a powerful new villain.
Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron), Kemp Powers (Soul) and Justin K. Thompson direct from a screenplay by producers Phil Lord & Chris Miller and David Callaham.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part II will be released on March 29, 2024. In addition to a raft of awards and critical acclaim, the first movie scored $375.5 million at the global box office.
With the fall release date open, Sony Pictures Releasing is moving up Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile from November 18 to October 7, 2022. The live-action/animation hybrid project adapts the 1960s children’s book by Bernard Waber, directed/produced by Will Speck & Josh Gordon (Hit Monkey), written by Will Davies (How to Train Your Dragon), with original songs by Oscar winners Benj Pasek & Justin Pal (La La Land).
The film will star Javier Bardem as Hector P. Valenti, Constance Wu as Mrs. Primm, Scoot McNairy as Mr. Primm, Brett Gelman as Mr. Grumps, Winslow Fegley, Lyric Hurd and singer Shawn Mendes as the voice of Lyle.
The date changes announced also include live-action Spider-Man spinoff Madame Web (July 7, 2023), The Equalizer 3 (Sept. 1, 2023) and Korean War pic Devotion (wide release Oct. 28).
SPA’s development slate includes it own Spidey spinoff featuring the Spider-Women, a Ghostbusters spinoff, K-Pop Demon Hunters (rumored to be picked up by Netflix) and projects from story artist Emily Dean, Oscar-winning Hair Love helmer Matthew A. Cherry and Hotel Transylvania maestro Genndy Tartakovsky.
