SIGGRAPH 2018 is continuing to expand its spotlight on computer graphics and interactive techniques with the news that it has partnered with FlyOver Canada for a one-of-a-kind Themed Entertainment Contest. The competition, held in conjunction with the 45th conference (Aug. 12-16 in Vancouver, BC), includes a $10,000 cash prize.
“We are very excited to announce SIGGRAPH’s first-ever Themed Entertainment Contest and are grateful to our partners at FlyOver Canada. We invite content creators from around the world to let their minds run free, as they develop visuals their SIGGRAPH peers will never forget,” commented 2018 Conference Chair Roy C. Anthony.
FlyOver Canada uses state-of-the-art tech in a next-gen attraction that simulates the sensation of flight: Riders are suspended with their feet dangling in front of a 20-meter spherical screen, immersed in an exhilarating filmed adventure. The system supports special effects such as motion, spray mist and wind.
Contest entrants are invited to develop content suitable for all age groups that delivers a rich storytelling experience exploring one of four themes: “Halloween/Nightmare,” “Flight,” “Chinese New Year,” or “Generations” — the SIGGRAPH 2018 conference theme.
Entries will be reviewed by SIGGRAPH subject matter experts and FlyOver Canada executives to determine four finalists, from which one winner will be chosen. The winning entry will receive complimentary Full Conference registration for SIGGRAPH 2018, $10,000 USD cash prize, and airfare and hotel accomodation in Vancouver for up to three nights (not to exceed $5,000 USD) and the opportunity to experience the winning project in person during a special on-site event at the show.
“We are delighted to be working with SIGGRAPH on this wonderful contest. We know that the attendees who enjoy SIGGRAPH every year come from around the world, bringing with them next-generation talent across every area of digital arts and new technologies,” said FlyOver Canada General Manager Lisa Adams. “We cannot wait to see what exhilarating creative content the winner of this SIGGRAPH contest will bring to our FlyOver Canada screen!”
