Alpha and Omega Opens with $9.2M

Alpha and Omega, the new animated feature film from Lionsgate and Crest Animation, opened at the back of the pack of this weekend’s new movie releases.

The movie grossed $9.2 million for the weekend, landing it in fifth place behind three new releases and one holdover.

The Town lead the weekend by opening to $23.8 million in ticket sales. It was followed by the comedy Easy A with $18.2 million and the horror film Devil with $12.6 million. Last week’s champ, Resident Evil: Afterlife, landed in fourth place with $10.1 million.

Further down in the long tail section of the list is Toy Story 3, which earned an estimated $437,000 this weekend to bring its domestic total to $410 million. The overseas take of $635.7 million gives the Disney-Pixar release a worldwide total of $1.05 billion.

In its fourth weekend of release, Avatar: Special Edition earned about $245,000. The special edition re-release of the film has earned $10.4 million ‘ an amount dwarfed by the $749 million the film made in its original release. With more than $2 billion in overseas ticket sales, Avatar’s all-time box office record of $2.8 billion is unlikely to be topped anytime soon.
