Film Roman has entered a joint venture with leading Baja California animation facility Boxel Studios to create full-service animation and visual effects studio Film Roman Baja in Tijuana, Mexico. Located just south of San Diego, the fully operational studio is easily accessible from Los Angeles.
Just across the border, the location will allow US-based creatives to stay involved “on premises” in day-to-day production, interacting with the well-qualified Mexico-based creative team and technical staff. Film Roman Baja is servicing all Film Roman productions, and will be available for hire on outside productions. Specializing in both traditional and 3D animation, major client productions at the moment include the Max Steel series for Mattel.
“The venture’s driving purpose is to execute high-quality, cost-effective animated properties across a broad spectrum of platforms; including features, television and new media productions,” said Film Roman CEO Steve Waterman.
Day-to-day operations in Baja are being overseen by Boxel co-founder and creative director Uriel Reyes Botello and co-founder and director Andres Reyes Botello, with Waterman and Film Roman founder Phil Roman providing senior management and oversight.
“Having worked with Boxel on the feature El Americano, I saw firsthand the quality and energy of their animation. It is their passion and love of animation that our Baja animators bring to our projects that will help us compete in the world market,” said Phil Roman.
