Animation is not just tops at the box office this summer, its also eating up the home video sales charts as Disney’s 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty and Twentieth Century Fox Television’s Family Guy: Vol. 2 fly off shelves.
Nielsen Videoscan has Sleeping Beauty Collector’s Edition on top of the DVD charts, just ahead of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. A restored and remastered image and a ton of extra features helped drive sales of the animated favorite during its first week out of the Disney vaults. That same list has the third season set of Family Guy at No. 6 behind Malibu’s Most Wanted, Bulletproof Monk and The Core.
Family Guy ranks even higher on retail chain Hollywood Video’s list of DVD best sellers, where it landed in second place behind Two Towers and just ahead of The Simpson Season 3. Sleeping Beauty comes in at No. 4 on that list. Family Guy is also out-performing Sleeping Beauty at Amazon, where it is the fourth best selling DVD after Buffy the Vampire Slayer The Complete Fifth Season, Two Towers and Sex and the City The Complete Fifth Season. Pre-orders put Finding Nemo at No. 5, while Sleeping Beauty ranks just out of the top ten at No. 11.
There seems to be more advanced demand for Finding Nemo on VHS. The summer blockbuster is No. 3 on Amazon’s VHS best seller list. At No. 2 is the just released Bionicle: Mask of Light, a superior direct-to-video animated offering from Miramax and LEGO. Two Towers is still king on tape, coming in at No. 1.
