SIGGRAPH News Bytes: Chaos Group, PipelineFX, Mixamo

+ Chaos Group has announced the launch of Chaos Group Labs, a new collaborative think tank and R&D center to explore advances in rendering technology, based in L.A. Progress has already been made on projects focused on massively parallel rendering, cloud and GPU rendering, virtual performance capture and next-gen cinematic experiences. Current Lab initiatives include digital filmmaking experiments; with partners at NVIDIA, OptiTrack and BOXX, the company will present a prototype of V-Ray for MotionBuilder at Real-Time Live! The Wikihuman Project aims to further realistic rendering and animation of digital humans, involving a panel of academic and industry experts. Chaos has also partnered with tech startup Nurulize to develop fully immersive virtual reality experiences designed for Oculus Rift. Booth #501, chaosgroup.com

+ PipelineFX will be hosting a panel on “Building a Next-Generation Render Farm Pipeline” in room 3 of the Convention Centre on Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m. The Birds of a Feather panel will involve tech leads from Digital Domain, Scalar Decisions and Digital District as well as demos of the soon-to-be-released Qubel 6.6. Discussions will target strategic thinking around new technologies like the cloud, production tracking, review features and middleware apps for asset management. Booth #909, pipelinefx.com

+ Mixamo will be presenting a series of speaking events to talk about its modeling, rigging and animation capabilities. Capture in Depth will cover live, real-time animated content, leveraging machine learning and game engine technology Monday, Aug. 11 at 9 a.m. Real-Time Faces takes on up to the minute cartooning on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. The company will also showcase a complete walk-through of Mixamo’s services and how they work with the Unity game engine at Unity’s booth #398; time to be determined. mixamo.com
